2007 Form Challenges
#8 Balasi Stanza

It is believed that this stanza form was used by the Hungarian poet Balint Balassi, who rationalised it from a three line form consisting of 19 syllables per line, and broke it up by the use of internal rhymes.
This evolved into a rhyme scheme as follows

x. x. x. x. x. a.
x. x. x. x. x. a.
x. x. x. x. x. x. d
x. x. x. x. x. b
x. x. x. x. x. b
x. x. x. x. x. x. d
x. x. x. x. x. c
x. x. x. x. x. c
x. x. x. x. x. x. d

Froggy Feelings

Once on a starry night
Two frogs to their delight
Saw each other at a dance
And they knew right away
Without having to say
A word, this was no mere chance
Meeting – they were soul mates
And after several dates
They went on a trip to France.

But little did they know
The French like frog legs so
They were in for a surprise.
They chased them everywhere
Shouting out, “’ave no fear,
We will do you no ‘arm!“Lies!
And so they hopped across
The border, near got lost,
But that just strengthened their ties.

Another starry night,
With two frogs huddled tight
Looking upward at the moon.
He croaks an “I love you,”
She whispers back, “Me too:”
Then they both begin to croon
Tender frog lullabies
For sleepy tadpole eyes
That’ll be in dreamland soon.

Stargazer

Goodnight my radiant light,
How I wish that you might
Show your glory to all men;
To those who cannot see,
And those who choose to be
Blind to your brilliance when
If they would lift their eyes
They would see in your skies
Beauty far beyond their ken.

Shooting star you must know,
However far you go,
That I will never forget
How you inspired me,
And helped to set me free
I’m forever in your debt.
I’m in a peaceful place,
In life’s ongoing race,
No more need to fuss or fret.

Survival

Sometimes hurt can become
Our master, make us numb
Until we merely exist;
But we have to fight,
Keep focused on the light
At the tunnel’s end; resist
The urge to stay depressed,
We’re alive, we are blessed,
Perhaps even being missed.

Nobody has a clue
Not them, not me, not you,
What the future holds in store;
Life is no easy game,
Oft wounds us, leaves us lame,
But still we have to play; for
Despite hardship and pain,
We join the fray again,
That is simply Nature’s Law,

But look around and see
Friends everywhere who’ll be
Ready with a helping hand,
Or a willing shoulder,
To help move the boulder
That has us weighted down; and
We may soon realise
To our great surprise
That life once again is grand.

Lunch Hour Dreams

They sipped their cup of tea
As if they were all free
From years of true devotion
Relaxing, just being
Able to sit breathing
Exploring their emotions
And then the whistle blew
One hour surely flew
Respite from works commotion

Cello in the Wind

The winds mellow voice plays.
Deeper cello sound stays
Moving through the branches making
Notes more mature and soft
Through the branches they waft
And leaves in turn start shaking
Then nature adds her mood
When other sounds intrude
We hear the new day breaking.

Memories

When memories come awake
What impact does it make?
Do you think of us at all?
Do you feel pain like me
Longing for what could be?
Or with time has grown to small
I can’t believe you’d forget
Waking with no regret
My impact on you so small.

Do you remember nights
And watching setting sights
Seeing stars light up a while
Then hide behind the hill
And everything was still
You would look at me and smile
All was well, love was fine
That look said you were mine
Making the journey worthwhile.

-----

Oh Please

Excuse trembling fingers
In their search their lingers
Their quest is to know you well
To trace each unknown way
Or with pleasure to stay
Their quest is to please you well
And in time light a fire
There heaven to aspire
Satisfied to please you well

One night will not suffice
One lifetime, could entice
But now dreams say more please
We know each other now
And what life will allow
If only fate will not tease
Eternity our ground
When there is no more found
For a while we’ll be at ease.

-----

Tutti a Merda

What is left that we care
When only stars are there
The world is gone, all we love
Vanished into blackness
A hole, no scene, no mess
There is nothing to speak of
Then the hole is filled
Now’s the time to rebuild
One huge bang from up above.

Six days is all it takes
To create the mistakes
That led us back here again
Starting with slates anew
Will we take another view
Or still greedy, proud and vain
Then the Gods cry “Enough!
We’re tired of this stuff”,
And then flush us down the drain.

-----

Vail

One time on a morn’s stroll
I heard this tale unfold
Within a place of beauty
I listened intently
Wondering what could be
The source of that majesty
Then I looked in awe
Smiling at what I saw
‘Twas you saying “I love thee”.

-----

Vulnerable Cycles

Joined by the watchful sky
The night draws slowly nigh
Focussing on lessons taught
Present chatter silenced.
Night wind through trees advanced
And with it cold winds are brought.
Birds grow silent in their nests
Snuggle together breast to breast
As warmth becomes needy sought.

Clouds come and with them rain
Trees sounding like aflame
But feel instead piercing cold
That drags life out the soul
Each drop extracts a toll
Creating victims for the mould
Night settles peacefully
And clouds move easterly
As nature again takes hold.

Then doth she cast out bait
When early blooms risk fate
And early spring brings them out.
Very soon comes a spell
Sending them all to hell
Again there is death all about
For a while winter ‘turns
But never a concern
For then is bet another drought.

Colours of May

Purple are my flowers,
bending under showers’
power, dripping with cold tears.
Brooding skies loom leaden,
burdened senses deaden;
black haunts future’s untold fears.
As weeping willows wave
above forgotten graves,
bells toll loudly loss of years.

Pink radiates my May,
as roses crowd out gray.
On every thorn tears are shed-
shining in morning’s dew,
they mirror life anew.
Fresh flowers lift up their head,
each droplet holds a world;
from buds new leaves unfurl
in splendour- black veils are shred.

-----

Flying with clouds

One last push with my feet,
I’m on my way to meet
my love, traveling on a cloud.
Down below glows the land,
sunshine lightens the sand-
colourful with summer crowds.
We sail above the sea,
gulls joined to fly with me,
bring me safe to you, they vowed.

A day that doesn’t end,
at dawn we will descend-
we journey forward in time.
Passing mountains and isles,
going thousands of miles-
still higher my dreams now climb.
Clouds flock to keep me warm,
before us looms a storm;
E.T.A. is set at prime.

Judging

Intentions brought to nought?
Fie, my dear, for such thoughts...
Life’s road is hard to travel;
think positive might aid-
bring sunshine to your shade.
Life’s knots will then unravel.
Have patience, persevere,
sweet victory comes near-
Life’s judge will strike his gavel.

-----

Knight of Hearts

Thy heart, my knight, I'll hold
as future's buds unfold;
thy chaste kiss I may allow,
until that day foretold.
Thy cloak and sword, with gold
adorned, prove thy knightly vows.
My feet should not be bold
and tread on precious folds-
a kiss to ease thy tired brow?

-----

Lost Race

Man-made light hides stars' glow-
polluting nightly show
of sparkling gems on satin;
As ancient gods look down
upon us with with deep frowns,
bright lustre fades and flattens.
"Mankind, beware!" gods cry,
"when Earth is forced to die-
your race will lose its baton."

-----

Pleasing the senses II

My tongue traces your lips
as your hands hold my hips;
hot skin fusing, wild hearts race.
Throbbing veins' attraction-
watching is perfection-
eyes drink in your glowing face.
Fingers travel upwards,
conquering wavering guards;
backs stretch in perfect embrace.

-----

Reflections

My sky is overcast
as sunshine wouldn’t last;
temperature is dropping fast.
Past days were warm and bright,
transfigured by your light-
we both know the die is cast.
Are we just stepping round
in dances we once found
a joy- changed into a blast?

My world might be changing,
used to quick arranging,
challenges I face with grace.
New horizons glimmer;
though your light might shimmer,
steadfast love can’t be erased.
As future still withholds
chance glances- time unfolds
if warm fingers interlace?

-----

Star-wish

In the blink of an eye
I see a star shoot by;
from my heart escapes a wish.
My eyes follow its trail,
watch it catching star’s tail-
connection’s made with a swish.
Joined they light up the sky,
I wave a fond goodbye.
Will they be caught on a dish?

Flawless One Be?

Revenge of staled old
Downbeat force not to hold
Carry on, leave those behind
Oppose the Qualms foreseen
eliminate the scene
Rid pessimistic mind
Dried mold and flavorless

Not one be perfect I find

Memorial Day in Honor Of Our Fallen Heroes

So many battles we’ve fought
Forlorn, grievance was brought
Then; now flag draped caskets
Departing heroes’ fame
Returns for which he came
Hush thy news, let’s mask it
Loving parts our sorrows
For today; tomorrow
One more hero’s basket

Never To Be Forgotten

Blowing in the light wind
Five thousand flags of friends
Just one grave site of Soldiers
Millions of people shown
Respect of those unknown
Past and present laid soldiers
Silent prays said at noon
In tribute freedoms tune
For past and present soldiers

Bag pipes, drums and trumpets
Music not to forget
The past and present soldiers
Planes fly; one breaks away
In honor on this day
For past and present soldiers
God Blest these brave young men
Never be forgotten
The dead past; present soldiers.

One Day

Our life paths are many
Can’t always pick any
Then closing day in a dream.
Can we turn to sighs my dear
Tranquil no mayhem; fears
Into a deathless theme.
Tickle our witty sense
Open and relieve tense
We’d move loving hearts, it seems.

-----

Shooting Stars

A stunning evening glows
Like smiles by your noise
Passing of fleeting moments
Stars sending messages
Foreboding oral stage
Of my knight and nights well spent
Shooting stars from the West
Soon we’ll lie at the crest
And know forever was meant

Today

Secure within my home
Happy I am alone
I can call today my own
Not heaven, but I live
Come tears or joys it gives
I can call each day my own
Not pushed in disarray
Happier days to play
Today’s brighter on my own

One More Night

One more night could be mine,
Let one more eve be fine.
Please let birds sing while on wings
Of peaceful dreams of love,
Sunny storms from above,
Dewy mornings longer bring
One more day of sure rest,
Let one more hour be blessed
Harmonious as first Spring.

-----

Sunrise Smiles

Just a dawn caught in dreams
Is how I wish smiles beam
In mornings of sweetest charms
The stars fade like old gems
Carried in amulets
So nightmares can do no harm
And only arms hold gold
Where loves stories are told,
New light gives dreams all that's warm.

Oh please II

Oh please slow my heart
That mad galloping part
Out my chest it wants to fly.
That pounding in my ears
Wherein my reason cheers
Just to reach heavenly high.
Oh please smother me now
How much do you allow
And now knowing, deny?

Queen of Hearts

Had I the cloak to lay
Thy feet would ner be wet
My Queen step forth without fear.
My cloak, my sword is thine
In swearing thus, my life
Is thine beyond forever more
A kiss is all I seek
Thy lips on mine tis all.
Why not, thou hast my heart.

Nights

Nights were made for loving
Kissing, hugging; rubbing
And the day returns to soon
Day seem to long; to long
stirring all day love songs
Each tune excites; you soon croon
How thankful to be home
And collapse on the foam
Until day returns to soon.

Day

Now day returns again
Love isn’t down the drain
Instead carries on anew.
Time together flies by
Too soon the day will die
Then wrapped in love “Adieu”.
With the dawn love goes on
An endless union drawn
Until time itself is through.

-----

Tonight

Tonight I wish of you
What all lovers should do
And spend the night together.
One night under the stars
The world shall become ours
On a night like no other.
We will learn how love is
For you, and I know this
That there can be another.

Tonight

Our night will be blissful
Professing; bountiful
No heavenlier is felt
loving nurture’s be grown
Sweet music, tender moans
Our hands felt, touched we melt
Our wit does best devise
Love renewed our heart ties
Assuring, our love is svelte

The Hidden Stars

The stars are weeping tears
Hidden in the atmosphere
People are wondering why.
It’s been to long we’ve seen
Twinkling stars look serene
Crystal tears roll down their eyes
Abused from humans wrought
Wasting away distraught
From thickly coated grey skies.

Trewir Wintlak

One stars tears another’s joy

Those thickly coated skies
Are welcome to our eyes
Heralding winters wet gift.
Above the stars may weep
But with joy as tears seep
Into the earth and spirits lift.
Natures rules forget man
They are naught in her plan
And mans will soon get short shift.

The Winner

This race lost its baton,
For love still marches on;
As stars above shall glimmer,
No man can follow this,
His path of light he'll miss
Like vagrant lust felt for sure,
That cannot at all be true,
The sky will ever blue
Be, love the only winner.

Extraordinary!

Only the stars are free
Extraordinary!
And yet love cannot be bought
The stars and moon will shine
Hearing lovers say “I’m thine”
Knowing there has been no thought
Save what’s thought in a rush
Or a sexual ambush.
Stars intentions brought to nought.
