2007 Form Challenges
#6 Italian Octave

Italian Octave

This octave consists of two italian quatrains and was well used by Petrarch in his poetry. It had no set form or line length then and was used as a vehicle for his poems including his sonnets. Later Spenser formalised it to Iambic Pentameter, although modern poets prefer to just stick to pentameter. The original suggested pattern is:

a b b a a b b a
Nature #1

Knowing that soon its time will come
Each plant lives and dies, and so, and so,
Its own nourishment helps it grow.
The next generation will then become
A viable life and then in turn succumb.
Bound tight together for support
Flourishing with life on high and low
The life before, setting the epitome.

Ryter Roethicle
The problem with this form is that unlike Italian, English is not a naturally rhyming language and over the centuries, poets have laboured over the rhyme pattern, to not make it look forced, or too birthday cardish when the modern expedient is simply to add two Italian Quatrains and come up with:
a b b a c d d c
Nature #2

Given any chance at all new life begins
Growing, forming, shaping adapting to strife
This is the challenge Nature puts on life.
It thrives and shapes and lives and fits within
Each plant mutates and has adapted so
And every year with the start of Natures round
On looking close a new shoot is found
Having laid for months asleep in snow.

Life is so much like the steps of ballet
one minute your flying above cloud nine;
or alone you'll sit and wait for a sign
hoping that it shows you a bright new way
So you pick yourself up, balance the sway;
decide everything's going to be fine
from now on you follow no crooked line
and dance to your own tune without delay

Give all to love

Tonight our love reached it peak so far.
Yet I am reminded there is nothing,
Nothing we cannot do with loving
For each time we love, we raise the bar.
There is no challenge, no call from afar
For true love sets its mark to all
And all lovers harken to its call
Give all to love follow your star.

-----

Love Lingered

The piper played, but out of tune
And a mind thinking of another thing
Misheard, hearing other words ring.
Anger and mistrust clouded the moon
Forcing friendship, to end too soon.
Bitter words soured feelings in the breast
Angry looks and sounds did all the rest Reducing it all to a crazy cartoon.

-----

Mists of Time

Somewhere in the mists of time I met you
We shared wine and bread together you and I
And the songs sang will echo through eternity
And now each life I wait until our rendezvous.
Each blessed meeting this life the days are few
Sharing wine and bread and song, being happy
Confident of a love that is more than certainty
But planned by fate, getting stronger as it grew

-----

Nuovo Viaggio

Soft winds blow oíer moonlit sheets of green
Highlighting darker paths of what was brown,
Leading from what was a familiar town,
To an unknown future, and places yet unseen.
Clouds silently manoeuvre and reset the scene
And doubt enters the mind and on the face a frown
Replaces carefree smile as rain suddenly beats down
Swiftly removing pictures of what could have been.

What was promise now seems lost in all the rain
A feeling that hopes and dreams have washed away
All chances to start anew at the start to this day,
Creating more fear to walk on this new path again.
But come the morn,

a new sight will be seen,
With once dull pastures shiny, refreshed withal
And drought starved trees again standing tall
As strong winds blow oíer sunlit sheets of green.

-----

Photograph

I sit here and look at your photo again
Iím reminded of how my life has been
Until recent merely a poor love scene
But now its strong there is no strain
Out of madness you've made me sane
My previous life has been so mean
A brighter side through you I've seen
You have taught me how to love again

-----

Presence in my mind

You have become a presence in my mind.
I do not like it, for no longer is my mind free
Instead, my waking time is taken up with thee
My thoughts once controlled and simple kind
Now wander off in space, to leave me blind
And think of things that could pleasure be
Of the future, of love and of you and me
And the way our souls around each other wind.

-----

Question

Would'st thou nestle by my fireside,
Needs that I be your beacon in the night
Your lighthouse or just a shining light
Or would thou prefer in the dark to hide?
I offer you warmth staying by my side
Instead of that cold harsh white sight
A warmth of which will your soul ignite
As in your lovers arms you chose abide.

-----

Reality

There is a silent song, soft as tear drops
Slow as the rain poised at my fingertips
Ready to be played in soft wordily snips
In words of beauty, that my muse just pops
Such as morality and sexuality
Written out in verse under the same light
Whose touches only come in visions at night
And speaks one word to me, "Reality".

-----

Somewhere

Somewhere between not there and halfway
My life was like a parade and carried on.
Somewhere between half full and gone
There was a grey zone where I lived each day.
Somewhere we met and then I went astray
Planning a future we could live upon.
Somewhere between then and now we saw the dawn
Leaving the moon, seeing the sun leading our way.

-----

Twilight Dreams

The dawn of night promises things to come
Twilight glimmers with unclaimed dreams.
What love of day is not bettered by moon beams
And reluctant newfound love easier to be won?
Often loves words are smothered by light and sun
Yet freely given and received as lovers schemes.
Following paths carved out by wishful streams
Words curbed no more, at night are overcome.

-----

Zenith

A perfume splash on ivory mounds,
Or between, or there, where blush wine
And colours melt swirling shapes divine,
Creating heartbeats and throbbing pounds.
Thighs brush, whispers, a deeper voice
Stockings discard, and scented winds drift
Across shimmering pools, in passioned shift
Moon glow colours become the loving choice.

Lips shining in candle light gloss
Promising eyes, soft with capture,
Wish a lovers hand tiptoeing there,
Making goose bumps rise on ribs emboss,
Tickle belly sides, and soft spoke tips
Feather breath warmth, voiceless words
Spoken by those eyes with shining chords
Until final mews of pleasure from those lips.

Addiction

As smoke is drawn in guileless lungs, it burns
tobacco orange- additives convict;
inhaling fumes, polluting blood, constrict
resisting veins, till conscious choice adjourns.
Inside, the body changes, soon it yearns;
while restless fingers search, dry lips are licked-
it might be years before the habitís kicked.
Obsessive craving, hard to beat, returns.

-----

Bound

With threads, much stronger than a spiderís web,
Iím bound. Across my chest run filaments-
blood spun from whispered sighs as love torments;
the leash is taken in on passionís ebb.
Iím given rein to ride when senses soar,
surpassing obstacles to dare the edge-
till heat is spent upon a sheltered ledge.
New yarn is twined from heartbeats in rapport.

-----

Dawn

5.30 am: on a Queensland beach
an orange dawn shakes off nightís flimsy dress;
awakens dozing waves in warm caress,
envelops surf and sand, within her reach.
She leaves the oceanís bed- a naiadís breach;
heís loath to let her go, checks her progress
across the crimson sky, knows heíll possess
her once her round is full- a perfect peach.

-----

Dreaming

Nightís velvet blanket covers her, enfolding
silky limbs in moonlit hues of blue.
On naked skin shine blooming drops of dew-
a promising relief now still withholding.
She rests in Morpheusí arms, prey to his moulding-
encountering voluptuous debuts.
As nibbled kisses stir, excite, imbue
defenseless flesh- high peaks are long upholding.

-----

Dusk

Dusk wears her purple negligee tonight;
sheís weary from her travels, longs for bed
and for the cool touch of her loverís spread.
His western sands are bordered by surfís white,
soft waves of music welcome her, invite;
as moonís pale glow turns purple into red,
the remnants of her evening dress are shred.
In joining they fulfill sweet passionís rite.

-----

Pruning

A dissonant disturbs loveís concert soon,
croaks like a frog in heat before its mate-
romantic tones turn into vile debate.
As clouds ascend, hiding the face of Moon,
pink veils withdraw, arresting loversí swoon;
all fervour now abates- they sit up straight.
The final chord resounds, itís not too late:
before ill weed grows roots, itíd best be pruned.

-----

Tango

With measured steps and bodies taut, they dance;
impassive faces sharply turn aside
as patterns weave- bloodís passion still denied.
When rhythms quicken, both performers prance,
unspoken challenges exchanged in glance.
Deliberation dripping from each stride,
feeds fires now igniting from inside.
In tangoís thrall, the couple glides- entranced.

A gift Albert Gave To All Writerís

He lifted his pen and knowledgeable brim
And shared it with writerís all around
His days, his nights were intense and sound
Sharing and giving his site to write on a whim
Spiritually guided, light brought to him
His gifts for filled and desires were renowned
He suffered in pain, now heís homeward bound;
Homeward bound, His freedom weíll sing in a hymn

It Was Grand!

They touched and kissed with their hands
As though by lips; it was grand, it was grand!
Their eyes explored all splendours in view
As though by lips, it was grand, it was grand!
Enriching thoughts restored and delightful new
They touched, kissed with eyes and hands, it was grand!
How could they live after a complete eclipse
They live forever in harmonious outstrips.

The Next Song And Dance

He held me close in loving arms
Told me he loved me, I believed it so
We talked for hours, on the enhanced patio
Delighting in each others charismatic charms
We toasted to faith, who given us another chance
We spoke like weíd know each other for years
Sharing a kiss; a kiss to relish among our souvenirs
Tranced by the glance, romance was a serene song and dance

The romantic night together at last and alone
Immediately defying what friends had recalled
We laughed, we danced, let past pass into a controlled stall
Alone, feelings shifted to a comfortable zone
Not knowing the next step, unarranged and unbeknown
On our walk on the beach, with the blanket now sprawled
Enthralled in our love where heartfelt love was installed
Making our evening a forever foundational stone

What More Could You Ask For?

My heart is soft and warm inside
Look at all the beauty I bring
I hear the humming of love songs I sing
Seeing the true lining I so desire to hide
At times the scars of things been denied
Ya see, I am a human beingÖ
A dash of spirals, at times a ding-a-ling
Just like you, Iím a sophisticated Jekyll and Hyde

Hold Your Own

Don't ignore the music of the unknown
For if you do then it will drown you out,
Playing in your ears like a wild mans shout,
Taking your attentions with slide trombone
Into another zone without a dance,
Lost chances, to ever shifting currents
Of air, tides of despair, joys remnants
Held fast on the stays of ones boots, by chance.

-----

Journey Into Night

From the light we once beheld life,
In warming ways wandered there for days
Delighting in dreaming rays of bright plays
Through trees in tumultuous breeze; the spaewife
Then foretold a new passage would begin,
Rife shadows falling beside oaks and feet
Where clouds gather greetings, days end to meet
As twilight descends, we walk darkly in.

-----

Waiting for Summer

Viola's peep through, at first few and small,
Their tiny splashes of hue from humus
Now uncovered by snow, are so joyous
To see, after so long a wait, withal
Are only the beginning of sweet spring,
Not conceding into summers new dress
Lest we forget to woo the season less,
For pressed, brings no less waiting July's ling.

Moonlight

Moonlight is the bringer of your dreams
Pouring fantasies through the window
With the wind whispering soft and low
Enhancing with its sighs all the schemes
You shall plan in order to win your love.
Seducing him with more simple ways
Oft times in the end much better pays
Ending with promises through all above.

Sunís Light

As Sunís warm fingers touch Moonís skin, caress,
each nerve end wakes, unfolding for his kiss.
Expectant trembling heightens heat, brings bliss
to ancient rites, danced with composed finesse.
His tender rays pervade her pores, possess
her body, make her blush, yet Sun persists-
in joyful victory, restraintís dismissed.
Moon glows, in mirroring his lightís success.

Yesterday

Yesterday I was the sun that saw you swim nude,
Then smile at my warmth as I dried your skin.
Yesterday I teased your hair, I was a wind.
And lifted your skirts high, and your mood
Yesterday as a river I held your breasts in reflection,
You whispered secrets to the woman behind.
Yesterday I was a branch your thighs entwined
My leaves are richer having known your perfection.

Sunís touch

Yesterday I felt your warmth envelop me.
You dried my skin after my ocean dip;
my hair you blew in curls, escaping grip.
Your breath played with my skirt, blew my legs free.
Cool water stroked my breasts afloat in sea,
in lingering touch your hand caressed my hip.
Your sunlit beach invited me to strip,
as crested waves swept me to harboured lee.

Because of you

My nights have brightened because of you
Still boring days of a more mundane task
Showing a happy-go-lucky carefree mask
With heart thumping till you come into view.
Then all is well and settled with the world
And my heart becomes light, I smile again
From the madness of doubt I emerge sane
As once again our lives become unfurled.

When you come into sight, late at night
I dwell in all you offer and share
Knowing and sensing you truly care
Your touching words however slight
Moves my senses, to a parallel domain
Many nights of calm romance well spent
Music played soft and eloquent
Erasing all doubts of loving again.

Sunshine grants all wishes to those who dare
To dream by moonlight, such a fair sight,
Yet to replenish dreams you need sunlight;
Pure and radiant reflections to share
In real ways, to grow in the light of love,
For all love gives life to spirit and dreams,
No need to plan nor make seductive schemes,
As each day brings suns rays, spite clouds above.
