2009 Form Challenges

#16 Echo Sonnet

This is a relatively new form devised by the well respected English Poet, Jeff Green. It takes its shape from three envelope quatrains and a couplet, the last line of each stanza is a refrain that links the quatrains and gives us a rhyme scheme of;
A, b, b, A1,a, c, c, A1,a, d, d, A1,A, A1
The Echo Sonnet is based on French repeating forms, but unlike those forms which are normally syllabic, the preferred rhyme scheme is Iambic pentameter, or similar, and being a sonnet it should be presented as a 14 line poem. Here is a lovely example of that form.
Waking Dreams

When ev'ry waking moment dreams of you,
the simple words that are my heart's refrain,
echo while dancing through the pouring rain
these crazy things you make me want to do.
The girl who brings my world to life, it's true,
my mind when lost to senses of desire,
when you , my love, have set my heart on fire,
with crazy things you make me want to do.
As shadows change to a more vibrant hue,
a world in colours of fantastic light,
and you, the girl, who caught my heart's eye sight,

with crazy things you make me want to do.
When ev'ry waking moment dreams of you,
and crazy things you make me want to do.

Jem Farmer

I am assured that the creator insisted on pentameter meter. The choice of capitalisation at the beginning of each line is purely your decision, but the creators of the sonnet insist on a 14 line form presentation, otherwise it will be merely a 4 stanza variety of forms.

Growing Pains

Our Independence Day is here again
And though I'm proud of all we have achieved
There are times when my heart is sorely grieved,
When I witness our nation writhe in pain.
I think our leaders must be blind, insane,
They seem immune to what is going on,
Like Nero, unconcerned, they fiddle, yawn
As they witness our nation writhe in pain.
The criminals it seems to me remain
Unpunished, free to run amok at will,
To plunder, kidnap, terrorise and kill,
As I witness our nation writhe in pain.
Our Independence Day is here again,
And I witness our nation writhe in pain.

After the Storm

Tempestuous storms from the raging ocean,
White sails billowing on tall, galleons of olde,
legends of waters, great dangers behold,
Waves claimed the lives, and Sailors devotion.
Inland destruction, and distraught emotions
Wild is the storm, that sweep the great seas
Dwellings awash, uprooting ancient trees.
Waves claimed the lives, and Sailors devotion.
With a peaceful rippling, on a gentle motion.
A calming of waters following a storm
Battered landscape, will always transform
Waves claimed the lives, and Sailors devotion
Tempestuous storms from the raging ocean.
Waves claimed the lives, and Sailors devotion.

Angels of Love

Celestial stars twinkle, in the heavens above
Shining down to Earth, on the darkest night,
Deep in trance, through soft mystical light,
A prophesy on Earth, of true eternal Love,
Visions of Angels, with white turtle doves,
Dreams of fulfillment, and heavenly bliss
Cool breezes blow down, a soft gentle kiss
A prophesy on Earth, of true eternal love.
Mythical spirits, awaken two lovers thereof
Hearts beating, like soft feathered wings
Angels choral voices, so sweetly they sing
A prophesy on earth, of true eternal love.
Celestial stars twinkle in the heavens above,
A prophesy on Earth, of true eternal love.

For All We Are

Time has brought us hope, from near and far,
Precious memories, will linger to the end.
Not just lovers, but both greatest friends.
To embrace, and touch, for all that we are;
Previously such thoughts, would be bizzare.
As times gone by, we two have found a love,
Exploring love,`neath the bright stars above
To embrace, and hold, for all that we are.
It would hurt so much, to say Au revoir.
True lovers, never meant, to be so denied,
Adore, and cherish, deepest feelings inside
To embrace, and touch, for all that we are.
Time has brought us hope, from near and far
To embrace, and touch, for all that we are.

Garden Of Eden

A garden so tranquil, is our perfect haven
Enticing us away from lifes formalities,
Lead us from earths sweet magical fallacies,
High upon the wings, of a mythical black Raven.
Fruits on the vines are so heavily laden,
Sun kissed and ripened now ready to eat,
In a mystical haze, from the hot suns heat,
High upon the wings, of a mythical black Raven.
To the garden of Eden thro` gates of heaven.
Where Angels sing sweetly `neath the bowers,
Weaving thro` tapestries, of beautiful flowers
High upon the wings, of a mythical black Raven.
A garden so tranquil is our perfect haven
High upon the wings, of a mythical black Raven,

The Harmony of Nature

I wander near, I wander far, away from my abode
Over hills, and over dales, with rivers running free,
In a land of milk and honey. beyond the deep sea,
To find perfect harmony, in natures musical mode.
Sweet heavenly gifts of, wondrous sights bestowed,
With exotical notes of Cedar. Sandalwood and Pine
And orchestral passions of woodland scents divine,
To find perfect harmony, in natures musical mode.
Birds on high in soprano pitch, sing a choral ode,
The rustling of leaves whisper, as woodwinds blow,
Then the finale, of natures natural crescendo`s flow.
To find perfect harmony, in natures musical mode.
I wander near, I wander far, away from my abode,
To find perfect harmony, in natures musical mode.

The Snow Maiden

Oh Maiden of the snow, whither do thy go,
When the snow is falling deep on the ground,
Whilst winters light is fading fast around,
Wild gusts, of cold December winds doth blow.
Packs of wolves are howling in the snow,
Hunger reveals their spirit, through amber eyes,
Oh Maiden of the snow, come hear saddened cries,
Wild gusts, of cold December winds doth blow.
Rivers that turn to ice and doth not flow,
No more, sun hath warmth, enough to melt.
Natives dwell in tepee`s, wrapped in pelts
Wild gusts, of cold December winds doth blow.
Oh Maiden of the snow, whither do thy go.
Wild gusts, of cold December winds doth blow.

That First Kiss

When two lovers met, they both fell deeply in love
How tender, and exciting, that first kiss can be,
Pent up feelings, let go and forever to be free,
Close in each others arms,`neath a starlit sky above,
Enjoying the nearness, and pleasures, deprived of,
How can, this divinity of love, be scorned a sin,
This night they will both remember now, deep within,
Close in each other arms, `neath a starlit sky above.
This first kiss will remain in their hearts thereof,
A memory ,they both shall cherish, for years to come,
When both lovers, came closer together then as one,
Close in each others arms,`neath a starlit sky above
When two lovers met, they both fell deepy in love,
Close in each others arms,`neath a starlit sky above.

Why Oh Why

Why in my heart, do I know I am wrong,
And why do I always strive to be right,
To know that I have to get up and fight,
And try to prove myself, I could belong.
Why do I feel, I am lost without song
In this World, so unforgiving, and cold,
I do not dare to listen, when I am told,
And try to prove myself, I could belong.
Why is it I hurt so, the whole night long
Emotions of love, choose to pass me by
All I achieve is a submissive sigh.
And try to prove myself, I could belong.
Why in my heart, do I know I am wrong
And try to prove myself, I could belong.

Wild Garden Herbs

Tincture of Arnica, for bones and sprains,
Flowers of Elder, a soothing cough potion,
Applied on the skin, for good freckle lotion.
Wild herbs from the garden, to ease the pains,
Calendula flower heads, dried from the rains,
Properties to soften, rough gardening hands,
An ancient remedy, used throughout the land,
Wild herbs from the garden to ease the pains.
Lavender, applied or mosquito bite reigns.
Keeps them at bay, flies away from the scent,
some old garden remedies, with properties meant,
Wild herbs from the garden, to ease the pains.
Tincture of Arnica, for bones and sprains,
Wild herbs from the garden, to ease the pains

Blades of Truth

Inside the walls of my mind, there's no light,
tormented thoughts my flaming chains of hell
the dreams, which keep me in this padded cell
just blades of truth released in endless night
I'm trapped inside a place of mental plight
the only sound, a screaming heart's last beats
so near yet out of reach as time repeats
the blades of truth released in endless night
Emotions pull my soul to edge of spite
In pits of fear my bleeding fingers gripped
the pain of life and curls of skin lie stripped
by blades of truth released in endless night.
Inside the walls of my mind, there's no light,
just blades of truth released in endless night.

Just a Poet

You taught me meter, words began to flow,
the sonnet form at last I could attain,
rewrite, rewrite, now read it out again,
my friend, a poet, sets the words aglow
A rhythm gives the words somewhere to go,
I fought against it, wanted my own voice,
you showed the path iambic gave me choice
my friend, a poet, sets the words aglow
You frown at slants of rhyme, I know you do,
I'll take the rap for that and simply grin,
you know this time I won't put owt new in,
my friend, a poet, sets the words aglow
You taught me meter, words began to flow,
my friend, a poet, sets the words aglow.

Rose Red

Her beauty hides behind the rose's thorn,
the promised love revealed on claret lips,
to catch her gentle kiss on fingertips,
in scarlet ink; my love forever sworn.
The trails of passion in spirals adorn
a wreath of love, and garlands dress her hair,
my broken heart can heal as thoughts repair
in scarlet ink; my love forever sworn.
My shadowed hopes lay cast aside; forlorn
the ivy dreams of summer's sunshine heat,
my rose shall bloom as petals gently meet
in scarlet ink; my love forever sworn.
Her beauty hides behind the roses thorn,
in scarlet ink; my love forever sworn.

Royal Visit

The scarlet path that waits for royal feet,
The finest crimson weave and softest pile,
A bouquet welcomed with a fleeting smile,
Her visit considered a regal treat.
The gathered crowd of watchers cheer to greet,
Her hand that waftures, gloved in purest white,
A moment's glimpse to sate the briefest sight,
Her visit considered a regal treat.
With grace and majesty, the day complete,
Her duty met the love and trust between
A faithful nation and their loyal Queen,
Her visit considered a regal treat.
The scarlet path that waits for royal feet,
Her visit considered a regal treat.

Autumn Warnings

I do not regret my life in any way
As it passes like smoke from a chimney
And a young man again I shall never be
Autumn tells me it's almost time to pay.
My hair is silver much preferred to grey
My heart no longer beats as once it did
And all my dangerous acts I now forbid
Autumn tells me it's almost time to pay.
Some mortals merely watch life each day
Others make adventure a living way of life
Some end in peace and others end in strife
Autumn tells me it's almost time to pay.
I do not regret my life in any way
Autumn tells me it's almost time to pay.

-----

Extempore

Think on this you mortals that you surface
Into a world as the newest member
Future unknown, the past you don't remember
As a babe you're part of the human race.
Your parents influence some of your traits
Manipulating what you know about things
Sometimes guiding, sometimes pulling your strings
And you grow up part of the human race.
As you mature a way of life you embrace
Becoming parents learning also as you grow
Following examples you saw a short time ago
Creating more parts of the human race
Think on this you mortals that you surface
As an important part of the human race.

-----

Fear of the Night

And on the first day the word created light
Then on the last day the word created flesh
And in its madness that flesh created fear,
Later in darkness flesh created fear of the night.
In that darkness all that was good took flight
And evil and all its creatures found a place
Forever to be a curse on the human race
When in darkness flesh created fear of the night.
Horned bloodsucking creatures that seek to bite
And feed off the flesh of God-fearing men
That self same stupid flesh that created them
When in darkness flesh created fear of the night.
And on the first day the word created light
Later in darkness flesh created fear of the night.

Prisoner

Like a prisoner you have me bound to you
But not with cuffs and chains of hardened steel
There are no prison bars, for my hands to feel
And I'm not counting days till freedom's due.
There was no crime, or deed, or whistle blew
My life is sealed by chance, on just one deal
A wound from cupid's dart that will not heal
And I'm not counting days till freedom's due.
No fear of escape or break, no strike or coup
Instead its bonds of love that the angels reel
I'll be a model prisoner, on an even keel
And I'm not counting days till freedom's due.
Like a prisoner you have me bound to you
And I'm not counting days till freedom's due.

unclaimed dreams

Twilight glimmers with unclaimed dreams
Casts away the promises made by the day
And for a short while it holds reality at bay,
Do not believe that life is all moonbeams.
Cover your eyes, or sleep it's not what it seems
There's no promise of what you want if you pray
'Cause in the end get that for what you pay
Do not believe that life is all moonbeams.
An unsatisfied life spent in useless schemes
Believe in a life lit by the Suns first ray
And welcome truth with the light of day
Do not believe that life is all moonbeams.
Twilight glimmers with unclaimed dreams
Do not believe that life is all moonbeams.

Vampire

Leathered wings beat in the moonlight
As on it's way the evil creature flies
A maid asleep upon her bed she lies
Cry loudly now you creatures of the night.
It sees her there she will be his tonight
Through the open window to his prize
Fearless the maid seeing begins to rise
Cry loudly now you creatures of the night.
Her throat, her soul she offers, invites his bite
And then his blood she drinks in wantonness
A Queen is created a Queen of Darkness
Cry loudly now you creatures of the night.
Leathered wings beat in the moonlight
Cry loudly now you creatures of the night.

When Darkness Looms

Sometimes it's hard to see past this dreary day
No comforting light shines upon or within
Especially hearing the settling creatures din
As darkness looms, tomorrow also fades away.
Deep in the night is when the morn will play
And whilst you sleep start to feel you will begin
Afresh and greet the morn with a happy grin
As darkness looms, tomorrow also fades away.
Misery and all its allies you'll see fall away
The day has become the past and now tis night
Today begins in darkness waiting for light
As darkness looms, tomorrow also fades away.
Sometimes it's hard to see past this dreary day
As darkness looms, tomorrow also fades away.

Xanadu

Beyond our reach is a rich land of fantasy
In another place, and some other time,
Is this perfect place with a perfect clime.
It's all you wish your life and dreams to be.
Everything we plan and wish and dare to see
Will each and every night be waiting there
This kaleidoscope so full of life's rich fare
It's all you wish your life and dreams to be.
Relax a while and let your minds go free
As each and every night on your beds you lie
With closed eyes you let your cares drift by
It's all you wish your life and dreams to be.
Beyond our reach is a rich land of fantasy
It's all you wish your life and dreams to be.

Garden of Emotions

Every emotion is a flower.
The roses of love are also such ones,
Shared by two they multiply in the sun
Expanding petals to capture it's power.
Desire is the touch of loves bower
That looks very much like tulips in rain
Warmed by Spring showers in sunny lanes
Where willows weep, love sleeps not in towers.
Let Forget-Me-Nots foster hope, not sour
Despairs of the dead seasons dry boast,
Where wine is so arid you may not toast
To the buds of every new hour.
Every emotion is a flower
Expanding petals to capture love's power.

Olde West

In The West you can dream of the future
Of all the prospects that are worthy,
Just imagine a boundless new country
Brimming with untapped resources, so pure.
And wonders of a free life, unencumbered
By lack of choice, fettered words or voice,
To rise above the predestination, peace,
Brimming with untapped resources, so pure.
From mountains high to fields of wheat, endured
The hearty souls who came bearing strong hopes,
Assured their dreams would help them to cope,
Brimming with untapped resources, so pure.
In The West you can dream of the future
Brimming with untapped resources, so pure.

Surrealistic Masquerade.
A Glosa of Echo Sonnets

Texte:

A rose in the high garden you desire. A wheel in the pure syntax of steel. The mountain stripped bare of Impressionist fog, The grays watching over the last balustrades.

Sonnet I

A rose in the high garden you desire,
the carmine lips that promise your delight
and fragrant pleasures found beyond the night
where flames of passion burn within love's fire.
And amber sparks the dreams which shall inspire
my artists touch as you my muse sip wine
and senses brush against a world divine
where flames of passion burn within love's fire.
To dance with you across the raging pyre
the wildest ride I found; your smiling grace
to take my hand within this secret place,
where flames of passion burn within love's fire.
A rose in the high garden you desire
where flames of passion burn within love's fire.

Sonnet II

And a wheel in the pure syntax of steel,
recalls the carbon nights I spent with you,
the ground lay scented with your rosy hue
those dreams, which I can no longer conceal.
Beneath the moon, you taught me how to feel,
the ebb and flow of love which courted me,
a cerise kiss opened my heart to see,
through dreams which I can no longer conceal.
You took my soul and let the stars reveal,
the love residing deep inside a thought,
a glimpse of existence my heart has sort
in dreams which I can no longer conceal.
And a wheel in the pure syntax of steel,
those dreams, which I can no longer conceal.

Sonnet III

Mountain stripped bare of impressionist fog
my soul as naked in your gazing eyes,
beneath the willow trails, you heard my sighs
while sat in love upon a seasoned log.
At summer's end the leaves so gently jog
upon the autumn's breeze where we first kissed,
when in the garden high above the mist
while sat with you upon a seasoned log.
My life of art without the missing cog
as empty as the board before the paint
until you gave me love without restraint,
while sat with you upon a seasoned log.
Mountain stripped bare of impressionist fog
while sat with you upon a seasoned log.

Sonnet IV

The grays watching o'er the last balustrades,
are fading in the autumn shades of red,
as song illuminates the way ahead
at this first dance of Modron's masquerade.
My goddess brings a light to darker shade,
your sweetest love the waxen scarlet flame
that swirls inside my molten heart's acclaim
at this first dance of Modron's masquerade.
The love I feel like waterfall's cascade
amid the circle built of ancient stone,
where like a queen upon the rowan throne,
at this first dance of Modron's masquerade.
The grays watching o'er the last balustrades,
at this first dance of Modron's masquerade.

Reflections of Senses
A Crown of Echo Sonnets

Sight: the 1st sense:

Your reflection in the window I look at it
And wonder how much of you I really see
How much do I know and where is the key
What do I see, how much do you permit?
Each time we meet, do we need to recommit
What lurks behind that look, your eyes, your smile?
That look of love on seeing has me so beguiled
What do I see, how much do you permit?
On my inquisition some things you wont admit
Instead you turn to me, two mirrors
Is it that your eyes hide all your past sorrows
What do I see, how much do you permit?
Your reflection in the window I look at it
What do I see, how much do you permit?

Sound: the 2nd sense:

Your reflection in the window will not admit
The depth of your love, and it makes me wonder
It does not speak will it cast me asunder
What should I hear, how much do you permit?
I wish with vows of love it would commit
Yet often it turns to me, still with a smile
But no sound from your alter ego to beguile
What should I hear, how much do you permit?
So many times I wish I could hear come from it
From time to time, those three exquisite words
And wish often that your spirit could be heard,
What should I hear, how much do you permit?
Your reflection in the window will not admit
What should I hear, how much do you permit?

Smell: the 3rd sense:

Your reflection there, there is no fragrance to it
I sniff, where is the odour? There is no scent
And what is the use if they are not fragrant
What do I sense, how much do you permit?
Scents of love, the tangy bouquet, where is it
Not even clean, showered and freshly soaped
How can this reflection doesn't bring me hope
What do I sense, how much do you permit?
It misses, the pungency of the fragrant bluet
This glass image possesses no savoury essence
That can ever compare to your scents presence
What do I sense, how much do you permit?
Your reflection in the window no fragrance to it
What do I sense, how much do you permit?

Taste: the 4th sense:

Your reflection in the window there's no taste to it
I wonder what kind of flavour does it endow.
Surely any taste of Heaven it won't allow
What do I taste, how much do you permit?
Will I mere mortal be able to savour every bit
Or merely taste naught like a water distilled
Having been supped the thirst is still filled
What do I taste, how much do you permit?
There is no finer taste than love I must admit
Where is the saltiness of lovers, there is is none
And the flavoured taste of loves juice is gone
What do I taste, how much do you permit?
Your reflection in the window there's no taste to it
What do I taste, how much do you permit?

Touch: the 5th sense:

Your reflection in the window can I touch it
How can I make it's feelings like mine grow
How is it possible what do I need to know
What may I touch, what is it that you permit?
This impostor's image has not your vite
Even though it holds your shape and form
There is much more than that to make it norm
What may I touch, what is it that you permit?
How well I know your willingness to submit
And offer your warm wet lips so soft to kiss
But your reflections offer means I will miss
What may I touch, what is it that you permit?
Your reflection in the window can I touch it
What may I touch, what is it that you permit?

Soul: the 5th sense:

Reflections in the window your soul emits
Do I see my Juliet and you your Romeo?
The light of love your soul wishes to show
What do I see, what is it that you permit?
What lurks behind your smile, should I commit?
Am I the lover that you so wish to beguile,
And you Mona Lisa with that enigmatic smile,
What do I see, what is it that you permit?
Is it love for each other we must admit
If so there is no need at all for sorrow?
Hand in hand we'll walk towards tomorrow
What do I see, what is it that you permit?
Reflections in the window your soul emits
What do I see, what is it that you permit?
