#21 Saraband Sonnet

This sonnet form is taken from the musical dance form which has an alternate meter of: 3 - 4, what could be more fitting than having a "little song" derived from a dance. The original Saraband was a dance of Asian origin introduced into Spain in the 16th century and later to the courts of France and Italy.
The sonnet meter follows the dance with four stanzas, first of 3 lines, second 4 lines, third of 3 lines and the last has 4 lines.
The rhyme scheme is; a. x. a.....b. c. b. c. etc.
In the Tercet shown above there is no need for the middle line to rhyme, but all three lines may rhyme, however, in the French version the middle line in stanzas one and three rhyme linking the stanza.
The Quatrain can vary from the Spanish shown above to French b. b. c. c. or Italian b. c. c. b. , and it is not uncommon to mix Quatrains, ie. Spanish with French or Italian.
For the purist each line comprises of Eight (8) syllables but there are examples of Iambic and Trochaic pentameter also.

Come! Walk with me

Come! Walk with me in the moonlight
Holding hands as we cross the sands
Together sharing this starry night
What's forgotten we remember
That our love existed before time.
Each new life revives those embers
I am yours, just as you are mine
The dawn will reaffirm our vow,
We will see what Fate will allow,
And take what she gives us for now.
Tomorrow promises us naught
For what we have cannot be bought
But I know what will be the best
You held eternally against my chest.

Sonnet #1

Did they count the time I ate grass
Or fell in the neighbors flowers
And snatched the first dime I stepped pass?
Do they know how it feels to fear
That the hand that feeds you also steals
The toys you loved, sold to your peers
Who then mocked, laughed, brooked no appeal?
As the river is bent so grows
The puzzles inside a child's head,
For pieces have no place to go.
No way to grow or fit in with
The normal ones who are fearless
For knowing only comforts care
Double dares mean naught but words chess.

Alone

Comforted only by this semi darkness
As hypnotic flickering candles shine
How could my life be such a mess
As I sit here I feel music flow over me
Reminiscing about those midnight kisses
Silently remembering what used to be
Our mountain of love the deepest abyss
I tried to talk to you and make amends
As I sit here alone drinking my wine.
You won't talk, how can we be friends?
Is fantasy just another world of lies
Can we truly love in this crazy world?
What is laughter but the start of sighs,
Sighs and tears as truth is unfurled.

-----

At The Grey Gums

In Mulgoa road the parrots call
The chatter begins before first light
Then ne'er ceasing till darkness fall.
A thousand birds will fill the trees
All seek different companies.
Parakeets, galahs, cockatoos too
Add their colours to this view.
At first light make their presence felt
Assembling in squawking work gangs
Along this once lush green belt.
The grass parrots seem to stay aloof
As if beauty alone needed proof
When good looks exist there's no doubt
There is no need to scream or shout.

-----

Clockworks

Its ancient echoes fade into the blackness
Tick, tock, the second hand makes a move
When it may end we still can only now guess.
Or better yet, what is this thing called time,
I've smelled Gardenias once, so sublime?
I've raised a glass to toast my dearest friend,
I've lived a life that time cannot transcend.
Times rough hands have swept past my heart
Leaving me, ticking, alone once again.
The pendulum swings but the chimes won't start
Standing in a corner, stately and staid
A face devoid of numbers, dreams waylaid
Mechanisms rusted by the tears I cry
Can someone please help me before I die?

-----

Come Walk With Me

Come! Walk with me in the moonlight
Holding hands as we cross the sands
Together sharing this starry night
What's forgotten we remember
That our love existed before time.
Each new life revives those embers
I am yours, just as you are mine
The dawn will reaffirm our vow,
We will see what Fate will allow,
And take what she gives us for now.
Tomorrow promises us naught
For what we have cannot be bought
But I know what will be the best
You held eternally against my chest.

-----

Cyber Dreams

Shadows wait under the 'puter lamp
Outside hearing the midnight rain
Unconcerned by cold and biting damp.
Anticipation of half promises
And expectations raise dream levels.
Then unseen lips blow passioned kisses
Love translates from well formed vowels.
Messages become smiles on a sunny day
Comforting words ease a river of pain
Distance only becomes a keystroke away.
Caressing words spoken as you weep
Cyber arms to lift you from the deep
Of whatever hole you may have fallen
Raising you to your smiling self again.

Dancing to Loves Tune

Dancing to loves tune, spin and turn
The fever of love causes you to burn,
But whilst apart your innards churn.
Inside your heartbeat skips and pounds
And your lover's steps you quickly learn
Bodies blending on your nightly sojourn
With the sensuous tempo of loving sounds
Your eternal love forever resounds
Each night to loves dancing we return
In a ballroom fitted for loving rounds.
Earthly bodies lie on silken grounds
There are no rules in love, no bounds
There is no contest, no points to earn,
Love gives all to which you yearn.

-----

Days Will Come

The days will come the days will go.
The hands of time move on and on,
And years will pass, not fast nor slow.
And in due time as our love grows
Eternity's silver torch has shone.
The days will come the days will go
The hands of time move on and on.
When suns have died there’s only snow,
At the end of time when all is gone
Our love will outlast the world below.
Walking down life's path will show,
Counting weeks as they pass anon;
The days will come the days will go,
The hands of time move on and on.

-----

Flight

God gave Angels and birds the gift of flight
Leaving man to stomp and root around.
To many creatures he gave this right.
Yet we evolved and still stayed downed.
I look each day and watch the avians play
Identifying them all by call, by sound.
These calls tell me how they enjoy the day
As the evening falls listen to their calls
And bragging of the adventures found.
Of sink and holes and huge thermals.
Reaching to the black bottomed cloud
Then flying along streets that now abound
A final descent into the evenings shroud
Scornful of us mortals held to ground.

-----

Full Moon

Full moon begets the darkest deeds
When evil spills out its wicked seeds
And creatures fulfil their basic needs.
As midnight strikes those fateful tolls
Hellish ghouls from the crypt crawls
Called forth by others demonic screams
Misbegotten from your worsed dreams.
Strangers had best beware this time
Wandering streets of potential crime
The locals too familiar with the slime.
At this time doors and windows barred
Armed men wary, standing guard
And yet each month with lunar wanes
Another family weeps their pains.

-----

Only Dreaming

Even though you are so far away
Only physically, not in my heart
I'm just imagining where you lay
On looking into the evening skies
Seeing the many stars up in space
Looking into your dreamy eyes
Once more seeing your shining face
Then looking upon the ground
Where there are still our memories
I would see you so easily found.
They bring so many familiarities
In that cool blowing soft night's air,
And listening to that winds melodies
Reminded of soft silvery feeling hair.

-----

Over the West Gate

The traffic's bad today as it hits the top
Because the sun rays hit the unprepared
Some drivers have almost come to a stop.
At the peak we're level with the waking sun
And a sniper could have no better shot
One thing's sure at this time driving's no fun
It's in the morn driving things are not so hot.
Thence once over we look down upon the bay
The mountains in front as the sun wakes up
For a moment we ignore problems in the fray.
Perhaps a blister of balloons come into view
Flames keeping them aloft along their way
Seeing the dawning sun as he slowly grew
And begging him, "Please, for a while do stay."

-----

Sailors Death

And only the sea shall know them
The ocean depth will be their grave
No wind will tug the wet shrouds hem
There is no church with bells to ring
No flowers cover the hallowed site
Nor choir with caring hymns to sing
Nor moon to shine its blessed light.
Neptune has claimed them all
And to his bosom they are gone
Till Armageddon makes its call
The day the sea gives up its dead.
The end of time, the end of night
When sailors will rise from their bed
Bathed in heavens blessed light.

-----

True North

What are lips if they are not shared?
What is love if it is not given,
And lovers if they are not paired?
Dreams are never what you expect,
Too late given were you to reject.
Make the most of what life offers
And dig deep into fates coffers.
What is Eternity if it's alone?
Two souls may seek awhile apart
Together finding how they have grown.
Where you to open what would you find?
Staying closed is staying blind!
Open life's doors let the light in
Face the future let life begin.

-----

Veils Lifted

I have looked up into the stars for a sign
And searched the lands and seas
The answer was in your eyes all the time.
Now I know, and your doubt can see,
Leaving me knowing where to start.
The mouth that would seem to call me,
Could not tell me about your heart.
Now in a reality that is divine
We have felt minds touch at last
Realising our souls will combine.
What will happen now is up to us,
Time and tide, is anybodies guess.
Yet I have the feeling all is well,
Before time's end doubts will dispel.

-----

Toybox Series

Alone with my Toybox

Opening my toybox after all this time
Silent tears begin to fall down my face
Seeing memories covered in dust and grime.
The beings there all lie sentient now
Uncared for, ignored, yet alive somehow.
Yes! Aware and alive and still with form
For what is memory but a previous norm?
It's a place of solitude with so much around.
There is no one to understand my place.
Yet no-one would know just by the sound?
Those within saw my look and my shame,
They knew of my life, I was not to blame.
So we sat and talked all through the night
By the following morn everything was right.

-----

Colours From My Toybox

It's something I did when I was alone,
Cognisant now but never repentant
To all intents, by my parents unknown.
I did nothing I was ashamed of.
Aeroplanes and nudes, I would paint
Too young to know or care about love,
My sketchings in a book, I wasn't a saint.
Before I was taught to write in verse
I used crayons and sketches as my escape
Everyone seemed older which was worse.
My parents would leave me in charge
And frustrations and desires would discharge.
But I didn't go to bed when I said I would
My use of crayons was well understood.

Perhaps by that time I'd seen too much strife
And overheard too many conversations
My crayons released my feelings about life.
Even then realising the hypocrisy of adults
My innocence belying awakening sensations,
They refused to allow me in their council
My coloured crayons, became my expressions.
Noiseless always as my feelings were birthed
On cartridge paper solid enough to draw on
To hold my feelings, for what they were worth.
Would you like to join me here in my recall?
Watching the world go by, sit here quick
Choose one of my crayons, here take your pick
But not the dark red it's my favourite of all.

-----

Heartbreak in the Toybox

Did you lie to me 'cause of what I see,
Or were you just lying to feel good?
Owli looks at you and then at me.
He blinks, looks confused and cries,
The others in the Toybox sit, stunned.
Were you lying to you, believing your lies?
Wambi, so tough yet so soft, sobs gently.
And I have felt his pain times before
He is crying because he trusted you,
It's hard to trust, yet he did once more.
My heart, yes it is broken! See, I bleed,
And I gave to you, I gave all I had inside.
Kanga looks accusingly at you and your deed
We all loved you and were fooled as you lied.

-----

Hearts Lost in the Toybox

The music being played is sad now,
And Kanga wipes away a little tear,
Even Wambi has a little sniffle to show
She has gone away and they miss her,
For even toys have souls and feelings.
It began that first day that was just a blur
I had ignored them for my other dealings
Then I knew I had lost them to her,
But I didn’t mind, they had lost me.
And ignored me, I was only a bother.
Now a sad little band's gathered here,
She hurt more than me when she went away
Now each one's lost, and sharing the misery
What would it take for her to stay?

Even Owli is sad and speechless.
The bright colours of the toybox
Look drab, lifeless and meaningless.
Kanga's swinging his tail in a corner
Then moved away as unimportant,
And in his home he is a foreigner,
We all try to forget her, but we can't.
An hour is too long without her,
Two weeks has days too many hours,
We want her here, now, right there.
We must wait until cloth hearts heal
And mine surely is my main concern
But my heart is not made of cloth
Will that also heal with her return?

-----

Her Toybox

I spent so much time in love's joy
I simply forgot all about myself
Now I am just another cast off toy.
Just gathering dust on your shelf.
Promising you love me with a smile.
The only one you love is yourself
And I'm defunct no longer in style.
The model you desire is new.
Now I lie here just a cast off
Not even a memory with you.
Whilst you have moved on
I've been replaced by a wannabe
I'm wishing only that with time
You will once against want me.

-----

Marbles in my Toybox

I hold a complete universe in a small black tin
Containing marbles, small round imagined spheres
There a young boy sees his imagination begin.
Forming stories, adventures I'd play my part
The glass became the sea, the colour the land;
A world with dreams and voyages on demand
Holding a glass ball; an adventure would start.
There in the Land of Nod reality was not fit
On some worlds defending freedom, is the norm
And free will has not been granted nor will it.
In this Garden of Eden, anything was norm
Strangely this globe is never cold, always warm.
I will never ever part with this collection
In writing my will I must use circumspection.

-----

My Toybox at First

There was a time when my Toybox was all
In there was Kanga, Wambi, and Dingo, my pals,
And above us was Owli, the clock on the wall.
When I was young I'd to talk to Owli all night
Together we would get into a terrible maul
In the deepest danger we'd hear his call
He'd sit and listen and help, make things right.
Together we'd escape from that dangerous state
And later brag about what fun we'd had
But who had saved us was Owli our mate.
He just sat there, never saying a word
But we knew who had saved us each time
And never given him any credit, our crime
In those days to apologise was just absurd.

-----

Tears in my Toyboxt

I was 10 and playing with my friends
My father saw me and packed a wobbly
Your too old for this, this is where it ends.
So I closed the lid on them and walked away
My tin soldiers were the finest in the world,
Only the meccano and leggo allowed to play
So a different pattern of behaviour unfurled.
During the week when my father was away
I'd do what I liked because he couldn't see
But at weekends I daren't go astray.
Kanga and Wambi knew right from the start,
And wise old Owli, obviously knew more.
They knew that very soon we'd have to part
They all knew our friendship was no more.

-----

Guilt is a Heavy Burdon

I gave up everything for you
You became my favourite toy
There wasn't anything I wouldn't do.
Wambi and the others look at me
I see the accusation in their eyes
And feel their betrayal justifiably
I wonder, dare I compromise
Owl sits there, he's far wiser than I
But he just sits there and looks so sad
As if to say; "why! Why! WHY!"
I turn away guilt, it's a heavy burden,
And use the excuse that I am older.
But then I realise all of a sudden
They too are older, and only need me.

-----

Future of the Toybox

Today I was reminded of my past
My grandkids were looking in my toybox
And Kanga and Wambi cried out, "At last".
Even Owli's replacement looked and smiled
Realising that dream life had begun again.
We have now a different Owl and child
But the same Kanga and Wambi reign.
The same Kanga and Wambi that I loved
Have moved on but sense my lineage
And will carry on knowing its approved.
They will show the girls their dreams
And with them their fantasies play
Until adulthood and all its schemes
Will ultimately seduce them away.

Bardic Vagabond

Born to the land he worked so hard
Within sweat and blood he pledged
A farm tilled by the mind of a bard
Across Scottish home lands he rode
Far from sheep and their company
As he fled his land to a new abode
Passions flew towards gypsy romany
Inspiration from his wayward mind
Composed his fantasies and dreams
That only a vagabond should find
Trials of wisdom in a wondrous brain
Of sights and sounds he never knew
He found his life within hope to gain
The gift of creation composed anew.

Fanciful Fantasies

If I close my eyes and wish to see
Amidst the magic of morning mist
Just as the suns rays breaks free
I see faeries dance thro`the glade
Within garlands of roses they play
Weaving through tall grass blades
How they danced at break of day
Wrapped within a mystical stance
Charmed within a magical fantasy
I had opened my eyes to romance
It was only a child then I had been
Yet felt what I watched to be true
I believed what my eyes had seen
Still within sight of fantasies anew.

Memoirs of Old

Time never fade's as days get longer
Winter shall happen as it has before
The bitter cold shall make us stronger
It shall in future as has in the past
Ne'er like a tree of leaves that cast
But wrap up more to fight the frost
Home fires alight whatever the cost
Food and wramth are what we need
To survive the winter seasons long
Nothing revives like a glass of mead
By the stove where we then belong
Hot are the embers that send a glow
Cold wind outside shall bring us snow
Watching the flickers of a dying ember
Those were the days we all remember.

-----

Natures Runes

Nigh upon the future she had cast
There before her the stones of old
From natures elements of the past
Within the past her future predicts
The gift of nature she shall but find
Through centuries of past conflicts
Upon the water earth fire and wind.
Deep in her soul she feels this gift
When a touch of the elements flow
That the pureness of waters drift
Upon ancient prophesies of stone
That thrived throughout the ages
She meditates there on her own
With thoughts upon future pages.

-----

Plight of a Raven

What shall I write in my diary tonight
If I opened my mind I think I could
Or fly with a raven when time is right
That is if Mr Raven can stand my voice
For I never do stop chatting you see
Ignoring this may never be my choice
There is nothing much wrong with me
Having such a lot trapped in my mind
Cleared from within to be out of sight
When sufferers harken just to be kind
I may be companion to a Raven in flight
Tho' he may think that I could be a bore
If I be silenced (well), most of the night
Upon dawn` I shall chatter some more.

-----

Stranger Than Strange

Strange are the creatures of elfin wood
Never to be seen by night or by day
Within silence they strive to be good
Yet with impish ways they yearn for fun
Playing foolish pranks upon everyone
When strange music is heard from afar
To summon others just where they are
They hide away as if no one was there
All that is found are ghost like shadows
Images that were not theirs to share
Strange it may seem within light of day
Not a thing did they do, nor did they say
Creatures they were of a humbled kind
Relying only upon a strange human mind.

-----

Youthful Fantasy

I recall days when my life was young
So green the country had featured
There at the top of my voice I sung
I was happy to be there on my own
For deep inside instincts had flown
To a safe retreat I felt complete
All my life I had been so discreet
Where e`er feelings of passion lay
If only to be complete upon my own
It was here I forever want to stay
Friends I had of beast and birds
To them only I spoke soft of words
Yet I found myself for many a day
Yearning for more in a natural way.

Book of Dreams

1 - Book of Dreams

Images of play shall come into view
When he opens the page of a book
But what he see's may not be true
As imagination takes over his mind
Not everyone shall think the same
And finds visions of another kind
Imagination shall take the blame
He see's before him green fields
Flying high his kite over the brook
Is this really what his image yields
Or fantasy within a childs dream
He see's what he wants to believe
To be always what it might seem
That only a dream shall conceive.

-----

2 - Nightmare

Time and time again this book of dreams
Has shown of spirits that haunt the mind
From an innocent ancient relic it seems
A frightening experience of evil source.
With eyes that follow all towards night
Forever searching for a sleepless course
Paralysing dreams with endless fright.
Once was a childs most favourite of toy
It was not what they thought would be
This victorian doll brought so much joy
Until the spirits of the past broke free
Within the nightmares of a fearful host
Twas those eyes they had feared to see
The bewitching stare of an ancient ghost.

-----

3 - Dreams of Love

Let love be our dream when time is right
The haunting of lust that plagues by day
With warmth and passion unto the night
The enticement of love shall stay forever
Within sweet dreams no heart shall sever
Fantasies anew that none shall forsaken
Love that occured both shall partake in
That shall entrance these dreams anew
Whether both together or quite alone
Dreams shall ever appear to come true
Everlasting spirits shall forever reunite
To a new future that appears as bright
Dreams of the past are never fogotten
Whilst past and future remain besotten.

-----

4 - Falling Star

Each falling star brings forth a dream
Then spirit lovers return once again
They shall be closer than it may seem
For a past life they had never forgot
Eternity passed with love renowned
Upon fallen stars dreams they sought
Everlasting love once more was found
Love shone within both hearts as true
Returning to earth upon a falling star
As shades of rainbow`s arched anew.
Fantasies and dreams shall always be
Draped within an eternity of emotion
Upon falling stars dreams break free
An enhancement laced with devotion.

-----

5 - Night Sweats

Shapes take place within our dreams
To plague us with an unrestful sleep
Images upon glows of moon beams.
Awaken with terror whatever may be
That haunts our window within night
Entwining menacing to venture free
Boughs enfold innocent victims tight.
Eyes that see more images than most
Fear installed within minds of unrest
Shall it be boughs of a tree or ghost.
Images became real to a tired mind
Not what they thought them to be
A nights sleep lost they cannot find
Too soon shall sunlight breaks free.

-----

6 - Faerie Tale

'Twas in the merriest month of May
A mystic time within realms of faes
Dreams are realised upon this day
Sweet a song they sing of romance
To mystic pipes of precise harmony
Enticing all to partake within dance
Towards cults of sacred matrimony.
A Prince of love within all his glory
Had won his divine rights of praise
Within pages of a faerie tale story.
Gifts of forsight this love was true
Mystical charms they shall redeem
Thro' fables of love they both knew
Within realistic realms of a dream.

December

Eyes close holding on to nothing
While angry voices disturb dreams
The heart has no song left to sing.
All talking done no words remain
As emptiness falls in silence
The senses ravaged raw with pain
Now push old love into past tense.
Eyes open unable to see
Beyond the violence and screams
Accept blindly this destiny.
Unspeaking lips that once were kissed
Cannot sing in humble delight
For love has slipped in swirling mist
As a heart breaks the lonesome night.

-----

The Essence Of Love

The fire to melt my blood of ice
The touch that makes the senses glow
With hands that lead the heart's device.
In coldness love's vibrant flow'r
Is crimson hued in ruby heads
Of amaryllis that shine red
A mark of time; the winter's hour.
Delights in winter wonderland
Yet hungers for flames in the snow
Then flows as grains of hourglass sand.
We walk beside the frozen pond
The place they call the lover's gate
'Tis there we share the kiss of fate
The essence of love sealed our bond.

-----

My Beautiful Muse

I hear her speak in lunar light
With eyes that sparkle through the dark;
Her gentle words demand I write.
Each time the pen and paper meet
I feel her presence drawing near
And like a kiss I turn to greet
The love I hold so very dear.
Now paper sheets are waiting for
My fountain pen to leave its mark
And speak of love like ne'er before.
The ink responds to softly tease
With words my heart has longed to say
For her who set my soul to ease
The woman I love more each day.

-----

My Dearest Friend Fred

Through darkest nights I had a friend
To hold my hand and wipe my tears
My broken heart was his to mend.
His name was Fred, my special mate
We came together, it was fate
My other toys I've put away
But Fred, he's here with me to stay.
My childhood secrets we would share
The hopes and dreams, and deepest fears
When no one else was there to care.
The only bear to hold my heart
How years have worn your seams apart
I've mended you from toe to head
To keep you near my dearest Fred.

-----

Out to Sea

Along the stream there gently floats
Autumntide's gift, a golden leaf
That trails the water like sailboats.
It slips away beyond all reach
On past grass laden river banks
Beside the kirk as folks give thanks
Onward! Onward to sunset's beach.
The fishing girl with eager eyes
Reflecting gold in disbelief
On it goes beneath moonlit skies.
The dancing shadows lift their boughs
As if to say a bon voyage
The faster waters beckon with rage
And echoes round the ocean's soughs.

-----

Returned to Stone

Their eyes cannot see me walk by
I dare not look beyond their gaze
Too scared to show the tears I cry.
I hear their laughter and see them smile
Confounded by my own denial
The truth of pain is purely mine
When asked if all is well: 'I'm fine'.
My happiness left me alone
To face the future in a haze
And thus my heart returned to stone.
My thoughts are lost in that black hole
Where tender kisses can't console
As beauty I will never see
Since she said she didn't love me

Two Minutes

The whole world mourns collectively.
For two brief minutes once a year
It's organised efficiently.
Both locally and nationally.
Two minutes to show we respect.
The men who fought for liberty
and died in order to protect.
The ones they love at any price
From a determined enemy
Who made the final sacrifice.
Remembrance Day when we parade
and take two minutes to reflect.
On sacrifices which were made.
Each one worthy of respect.

Her last leaves

My tree stands bare, most leaves now gone,
she shivers in cold autumn's breath;
her see-through branches, lace undone.
I feel connected to my tree,
have just returned from weeks of spring.
My skin, caressed by sun's sweet tease,
still wears a blush of recent fling.
High on tree's upraised skinny arms
a few last leaves still challenge death,
remembering past summer's charms.
Maybe they know what is to be
after long months of darkened cold.
New spring, still dormant in each tree,
at last will triumph and unfold.
