2013 Poetry Form Challenge

#23 Australian Sonnet (Bowlesian Sonnet)

William Lisle Bowles (24 September 1762 - 7 April 1850) was the undoubted originator of this sonnet form in England. He was a high ranking minister in the Church of England, and although it was popular for a while it settled into obscurity, meanwhile admirers of his poetry were setting out as missionaries to the colonies. Whilst Canada was a colony it might be suggested that it was less in need of religious supervision than the penal colony of Australia and the Aussie outback which was the ideal breeding ground for poets and poetry. Back in the towns the clergy would no doubt recite Bowles poetry and people would be far more influenced by his sonnets than his longer forms. Later the ladies of the church group would no doubt recite their version of that poem and again no doubt the budding Banjo, or Lawson would play with this form and in copying their Northern counterpart send messages of love to their women back in the towns and villages, and in due time the origin of this form would be forgotten, until one day a curious poet picked up a tatty book of poetry dated 1903 and saw several sonnets there all unique in form and two handwritten sonnets in the back dated 1914. It is assumed that the owner of the book died in the Great War.

This sonnet form has three Envelope quatrains and a couplet, which gives a rhyme sequence of;
a. b. b. a.... c. d. d. c..... e. f. f. e.... g. g.... Each sonnet is Tetrameter, Pentameter, or similar.

Madness

Am I forever holding back on my dreams,.
Scared to step out into the world again.
Lest I realise the world like me's insane,.
Realising all things with love are as it seems?.
Today's one more of waiting, and of abstinence.
Tomorrow will be the same until we meet.
Then time will pass again on winged feet.
And again sneer at our human impertinence..
Lovers who dare to wish and hope for more.
A simple wish that they were not to part.
Without hesitation have given their heart.
Despite past experience have chosen to ignore.
For certain love cannot ever be ignored.
And in given time that is the real reward..

How casually we regard life and think
That we are entitled to the good things
That are sent our way; but all these blessings
Could easily vanish in the mere blink
Of an eye. We just have to look around
To see the proof of it, it's everywhere;
Still we go on as if we do not care.
We ignore the disasters that surround
Us, once our little world remains intact.
Too selfish, cold, to feel another's pain
We turn a blind eye or perhaps we feign
Concern. That is reality, cold fact.
Without love in this world we are all lost,
Are we prepared to pay so high a cost?

Partial to Words

The words are there but just get blown away,
Everyday is a rare opal gem,
Pebbling a beach that now, we condemn
As each day is swept out like stones of clay.
What is left are the shadows we once saw
Together, now apart by three long weeks,
Though seldom do stories tell what tears speak.
Blue moon of fable and lore's we draw.
So here the poet in me seeks release
For peace of mind shouldn't be a blue moon,
Love then stays when sad songs end none too soon
And friends in less rare moments bring back peace
. So hope is found on shores ne'er to cease
With words that show the world love shan't decrease.

A Gentle Wind

A gentle wind blows away all of my cares
It has changed from land to seaward now
And to the cool incoming breeze I bow
The birds more alive sing their nightly prayers.
The days heat moves towards black clouds
I sit back with my glass of wine savouring
The wine, the coolerness, and the acclimating
Silence as the night has dispersed the crowds
Late summer gives out its own awards
Schools are back and noisy kids are gone
And dreams will be here at least till dawn
As always, pleasant music is its own reward
I lean back contemplating just a line or two,
Feeling I could write the whole night through.

Always

You were always privy to my heart
Hearts linked, you were part of me
Never ever mine how could you be
For a while that now seems so short.
Those days together long since gone
The times together so bittersweet
Time had wings when ere we'd meet
Each precious moment I still dwell on.
Those time apart listening to your song
I still listen now I cant stop the feeling
Wondering why my hearts not healing
Knowing to someone else you belong.
Time and tide won't mend this heart
It will always hurt whilst we're apart.

The Ant, The Cow and The Old Fart

Should I measure our time together in years
It would be merely a tic in the face of infinity
One hour of that is your pain through eternity
I have talked with you and sampled your fears.
To save you and be with you is why I was brought,
But pain and dreams are not part of life's plan
Scattered gifts are casually handed out to man.
Some have wealth, some luck, and others nought
I have planned and I have wished for some things
And all I planned and wished turned to nought
Yet some have fortune with labour dearly bought
For those same wishes made some men kings.
I liken it to life where an ant would milk a cow
And me, the old fart, trying to teach it how.

-----

Dichotomy

Because of fate we must live apart
Life has decreed it must be this way
We seize each moment, each new day.
Knowing now what is in my heart
Tempering souls whilst separate
With other souls we stop and play
Life has decreed it must be this way
Because of fate we must live apart.
Drawing strength, learning the art
Treating life as if we are in a play
Wondering if will we meet today
Or what is left on the muses chart
Because of fate we must live apart
Life has decreed it must be this way.

-----

Gone are the days

Gone are the warm days when I could hold you
Now you are faced with the coldness of winter.
Winter will not last this time, or any forever,
This time no ice or snow will mar your view.
Instead all that is needed is a kiss or two
Or three, or four, preferably those that linger
And will until your dying days remember
Moments which until now have been so few.
Time passes and in your winter I'll bring you heat
That warmth will melt any shadow of doubt
Together we will impress so that we may shout
Instead pass on what is your own heartbeat.
Speak of love to the world and boast of our route
Then hand in hand we'll see all of Eternity out.

-----

Heavenly Thoughts

With a fiery streak pointing the way
We saw a dead star crumble and slowly die
Leaving behind a smoking scar in the sky
The frightened birdlife screaming its dismay.
Was it fragment of another world so warm
In colliding with another smashed to bits
That arrives on Earth as a heavenly blitz
And seen sometimes as a meteor storm.
Or was it the cast offs of another system
Rejecting some things as it's created
Is introduced to the egg then mated
Like a lovers semen needing only one.
Whatever, there is now something here
That brings Heaven's infinity near.

-----

Il Percorso Sotto le Stelle

When there is nothing above us but stars
Below us is the path we choose to walk
Do not rush your thoughts, let us just talk
Let me walk with you and it will be ours.
And linger in some spot for untold hours
If perhaps in time we should choose to kiss
For what is love but time spent just in bliss
When there is nothing above us but stars.
We will watch as the icy mist disappears
In the freshness of morn plan our schemes
They will have warmed each of our dreams
When there is nothing above us but stars
Time cannot be controlled in spite of power
Ignore them love, let's find a fragrant bower

When there is nothing above us but stars
Then heaven is open for us to touch
So that each time we reach out to clutch
What are clouds but blankets, never bars
Must we treat the shadows like our fears
The moon lights up our path along our way
That in time might just betray?
When there is nothing above us but stars
Now ethereal gifts from light years afar
Consider them once part of something whole
Time has blessed us and took away control
When there is nothing above us but stars.
The path we take is carved by life's scars
When there is nothing above us but stars.

In Mulgoa Road

In Mulgoa road the parrots shriek and fight
See the white pecking order in the dark trees
As the harsh days wind turns into a breeze
You could hear them argue at the start of night.
Along the road the cars pass ignorantly by
Unaware of nature's beauty so close to them
Nature chose this place to show off her gems
And yet on seeing them pass I wonder why.
A strand of ordinary Australian gumtrees
Are home to a host of parrots and parakeets
Beauty beyond belief, are merely tourist treats
But it seems only tourists are who they please.
Are Mammon's things more important than this?
Open your eyes and see what you have missed!

-----

Indigo Scenes

See blue butterflies flying from the blue moon
To say they're hordes or swarms would be unjust
A crowd too cruel; more like a glorious gust,
Blown by a heavenly wind that will end too soon.
The mood is set the sky is blue, but tis day
Though we have little time to wait til death
Tis no problem at all to hold one's breath
When night appears with her unique display.
The redness has gone it's dark for just a while
Except the stars suddenly have all turned blue
The celebrity of the night comes into view
That indigo scene makes it all worthwhile.
And in the blue light of this night all is still
It always was and no doubt always will.

Love Letter

I'm reminded of how our life has been
Sitting, looking at your photograph again
By now it's strong regardless of the strain
Until we met merely a poor life scene.
My previous life I can now throw away
Out of madness I have finally emerged
Brighter because we've now converged
Helping me wile away each empty day.
When you're not here I can still view
Since I met you wanting you to stay
Images created for a while to play
It will not replace you, but it will do.
I don't need this to remind me of you
This picture keeps my memory true.

Nae one believes

A man and a woman fell in love at the fair
Och aye, and she was bonny and fair of face
And he was handsome and his pulse did race
Strangers at first, but in time, sae much maire.
So they wed and bided in their house together
In time bore bairns blue of eye and red of hair
But fate had controlled how they had met unaware.
She blossomed maire than flowers wi the heather.
Misery was never a thing that they knew
No-one believes good things can happen
Take time out, believe, leave your minds open.
With the years all they touched happiness grew.
With a smile designed to light up humanity
You realise good things are what should be.

Preguntas

Would you turn back the hands of time
And live again without any mistakes?
To show a face challenging the stakes
And live a life regardless of its climb.
Or knowing your way around your faults
This time with care, avoiding them all
Then you wonder would you stand tall
Stead of hiding in some protective vaults?
Whatever mistake in the past you made
Would you carefully pass on the blame
Climbing the heights of wealth and fame
Sleeping at night regardless of the charade.
Would you turn back the hands of time
And live a life regardless of its climb?

Question in Paradise

What may I ask of thee, that's not been answered?
Thy look tells me more than a thousand ways,
And I could gaze on thy sweet face a thousand days
Even ten thousand more and still not be sated.
Time spent with you is like nothing I have known,
I am content to spend my time learning about you.
The evenings and the nights, once days are through,
Will create a Paradise that we alone will own.
We'll create a garden of flowers and scented trees
There will be fruit and other foods in abundance
Birdsong will make us smile and happily prance
When naught else, we'll listen to the buzz of bees.
We have both seen Hell and have emerged sane
But now we've met we'll never be the same again.

A Stranger in Paradise - Michael Bedard

Rhythm of Love

When we make love, I feel our souls tapping feet
A rhythm that we feel as being so divine
Our heartbeats meld beating to the same time.
It is then we know that our love is complete.
A smile is a song a kiss a simple symphony
Loving is a concerto by Cupid or Higher
Stronger the rhythm beats the greater the fire
A melodious love created by you and me.
But at the end of loving the music does not die
A metronome still clicks away gently all day
Every day the tempo constant, come what may
There's a guarantee that it'll beat past eternity.
Life and love with you is a melody all the way
And no matter what happens, it's here to stay.

Two Sharing Souls

I love to speak the language of your soul,
It's not written in words but looks and deeds.
Those looks and acts fulfil all our earthly needs
And doing so each look and deed makes us whole.
To be in love you do not need to hear
Love's a language that's based on how you feel.
Word's defy the truth and can deny what is real,
Yet words are needed to remove all that you fear.
The language of the soul exists around the world
It knows not race or creed or what you are
And knows each pair that loves attains a star
That watches caring as their lives become unfurled.
At time's end two sharing souls call their star down
And thankfully, fix it carefully to their gown.

Eleanor Fortescue - Brickdale - Romeo and Juliets Farewell

Unione Degli Spiriti

My soul longed for contact with another soul
We met and then ever so quickly I fell for you
But because of life we frequently said adieu
It was only on meeting we felt we were whole.
We grew used to this requirement in our life
If anything on meeting it strengthened our love
Feelings that deepened more than most knew of
Who would never live knowing so little strife.
It gets no easier as the years of life move on
The one advantage is now experience will pay
And new memories are created every day
With the past creating a base to build upon.
Your soul holds the map, mine finds
Together we'll find Nirvana in our climbs.

-----

Unknowing

Rising up from sleep to greet another day
First thoughts of him, love swells like a tide
Starting morning wishing he was by her side
And wonders if he thought of her, in his way.
Just a brief few moments, smiles a secret smile
Looking at her sad eyes, catch her lonely stare
The woman in the mirror sighs, brushes back her hair
Fingers reaching out to trace I love you, on the tile.
Music, wine, candlelight, making love at break of day
Memories, so bitter sweet rush through her head
Thoughts of how he held her, sharing the same bed
Then sadness, a brave goodbye, as he flew away
Pulling herself together she whispers out his name
Unknowing many miles away he's feeling the same.

-----

Winter's Fire

I think of you in the cold winter's rain
Though the wind blows cold against my face
I draw my warmth from memories I retain
Of your sweet lips spreading their hot grace.
When trees are bowing sadly with the wind
And strangers huddle under coats too thin
To feel again the fever rising in my skin
I then recall passion's flame in your eyes
I feel your body blaze beneath my hand
As southerly winds blow and spread their ill
I burn for you in theses times of chill
Let winter do the very worst it can
Through coldest nights I lie in flush desire
In dire need of you, my winter's fire.

-----

You Made

You made each time we made love a lifetime
A lifetime I will remember and want forever
A lifetime I will never regret, ever
As towards Eternity we make our climb.
Who'd think seeing us we were aught but a pair
So struck was I, with love, sudden and complete
You stole my heart away silently and so sweet
Now what is life but love and a pleasure affair.
There's naught that beats love, not wealth or power
It has the strength to build a world and fill it
Whilst hatred builds naught at all and kills it
And hatred is naught than a pollution shower.
Love is intended to last forever and outlast Eternity
But requires that we both together shall always be.

Zenith

A perfume splash on ivory mounds,
Or between, or there, where blush wine
And colours melt swirling shapes divine,
Creating heartbeats and throbbing pounds.
Thighs brush, whispers, a deeper voice
Stockings discard, and scented winds drift
Across shimmering pools, in passioned shift
Moon glow colours become the loving choice.
Feather breath warmth, with voiceless words
Promising eyes, soft with loves surrender,
Softly a lovers hand slowly tiptoeing there,
Spoken by those eyes with shining chords
Tongues tickle belly sides, with soft spoke tips
Until final mews of pleasure from those lips.

Australian Kiltie Warrior

Whilst in Australia ye, my bonnie wee lad,
Proudly wore yer kilt, wi' a lass in yer arms
Twas of Australian tartan frae Scottish farms,
With a sporren oot front, tae hide all ye had,
There wisnae a finer laird, in all O' ozzy land,
In war ye fought wi yer claymore and shield
Wi valiant courage in Australias battle field
Havin` a lilt tae yer kilt, in a Scots guard band,
Your coat full 'o' medals pinned tae yer chest,
A braver warrior, wouldst be hard put tae find,
Ye Kilty Australian yer just wan O' a kind,
And tack it frae me, you are wan O' the best,
Thee tartan clad soldier wi' valour an' zest
Proudly wearin' yer kilt pinned tae yer vest.

Bond of Love

Captivating thoughts remain within
rendering dreams of a past refrain
pledged deep in her heart to regain
how could this love be taught a sin
discreminations of inborn chastity
remained as staunch within her mind
until fantasies arose of another kind
that had soon awakened a credibility
love holds no shame upon a loving heart
within a tender moment of utter bliss
an endearment of love sealed with kiss
that within a memory shall never part,
how may they think of this love a shame
it can only be ignorant minds to blame.

Cosy Dreams

Let the firelight glow within the hearth
Upon a cold and frosty winter morning
For clouds shall gather without warning
Snow may soon convert a wintery earth
How cosy we shall be like birds in a nest
Huddled together in the firelights glow
With never a care for the frost and snow
For making sweet love by the fire is best
The harmony of nature is all it may seem
In a cosy warm cottage for me and you
Perfect for romance within just for two
When all we have to do night long is dream
What a perfect haven for love this may be
If'n I was your she, and you were my he.

-----

Each Coming Night

Soft the voice that vibrates my very soul
upon a silent note that whispers of love
like an incoming breeze sent from above
drifting onwards towards the final goal
that carried emotions afloat on the river
I heard his sweet refrains on reflection
and discovered a blissful recollection
for the voice I heard was my soul giver
deep yet softly he sang of love's emotion
and this finally had awakened my heart
within pure rhapsody of loves devotion
all of my defences had shattered apart
shall recall those moments a life time long
each coming night within his soft love song.

The Lovers - Gustav Courbet

Elfin Wood Hall

There is a party tonight, down at Elfin Wood Hall
To celebrate the events of this New Years Eve,
Thro` sweet wild brambles, by snow covered leaves,
Just knock twice at the door, when you come to call,
There is lots of red berries, and loads of nuts,
With some Crab apple cider, to wash it all down.
Wild life that dwell on the edge of the town,
Shall indulge, from the shiniest, of wild acorn cups.
Just bring a large flagon, and a lump of coal,
There`s a welcome for sure at Elfin Wood Hall,
This New years Eve they are having a ball,
By the bunch of wild leaves of burnished gold
Just knock the door, to come in from the cold,
Two rabbits, and a mole, hopped into the fold.

-----

Embers of Love

Casting aside deep thoughts of rejection
feeling only the love you cherish within
it is there in your eyes that plead to begin
weakness of mind may need his protection
cherish this tenderness love has to give
and share of the same affection unto him
for love was never meant to be just a whim
if love is forever, togetherness shall live
hot is the passion of the flaming ember
that reach the climax of a burning pire
which shall not quench a flame of desire
remains deep within both to remember.
the creation of love is all it may seem
Spent of all passion as lovers redeem.

-----

Foggy Dew

I feel no warmth upon november skies
whilst thickened clouds remain as still
when vision is defused beyond the hill
of the foggy dew that shields the eyes
the earth lies still no movement of life
now asleep within winters hibernation
to reap the seeds of a past generation
whilst a spring morning affords no strife
but a promise of summer seasons glory
shall brighten us all with a mellow glow
before an autumn wind decide`s to blow
to return again within the same old story
I feel no warmth upon november skies
nor the foggy dew that shields the eyes.

-----

Forest Faeries

Lost in a fantasy of nature and charm
within silent dreams of a childs mind
that only vivid imagination shall find
where dreams are ever pure and calm
she speaks to the little birds that sing
vowing to be gentle and kind forever
friendship charms that shall not sever
with gifts of daisies from a faerie ring
that dance amidst shades of a rainbow
faeries weave through a magical spell
that only a child within play shall tell
for a mystical myth may forever flow
deep within fantasies of a childs play
remains in memory of a precious day.

-----

Future Past

When twilight gleams across the bracken
as glimmering ripplets of wavelets flow
within a calming night soft breezes blow
It is then that spirits within shall awaken
alike the ocean upon sage green waves
pastures of plenty shall nurture the land
tilled and manned by the humane hand
long passed since within silenced graves
sons and daughters reeped the benefit
all had survived upon this land of plenty
shall not last four score years and twenty
for the new generation may lack true grit
what kin folk have nurtured from the past
was never destined for the future to cast.

Mystic Moon

Spiritual fantasies. by shadow of a blue moon,
High Priestess chants rituals, `neath moons light
Beckoned spirits of love, to enter this night,
In a magical, tempting, rhythmic, bardic tune
She hath sensual, powers with her pagan chant,
Luring, enticing, souls of lovers to arise,
`Neath this mystic moon, from the darkened skies,
A blue moon, holds this power, to enchant,
In mystified daze, she chanted and danced
Awaiting visions, of her lost love`s desire,
From eternal magic flames, shalt then conspire,
Here on earth, with visions of love enhanced.
Entwined once again, through a spiritual trance
Her lover hath returned, for eternal romance.

-----

Once In A Blue Moon

Ancient times of myths, mystic moons, and folklore,
When the moon ruled, the ebb and flow of seas,
Like today in strong winds, or vibrant breeze,
With strong currents, that stir the deep sea floor.
Once, and only once, when this moon shaded blue,
Strange things happen, in void of the deep,
And high the tides rise with an internal sweep,
Mystical happenings, under blue waters construe,
Lost Cities arise, and take place on the shoreline,
Shipwrecks surface, set sail, covered in grime,
Eaten with rust, from the salt sea and brine,
From deep murky waters, in darkness and gloom,
Visions of fantasy, in our mind they may bloom,
And then, only then, `neath a shaded blue moon.

Prospects Nil

I who have lived through torment and pain
one more lifetime I shall not beg for more
within love and heartache I know the score
what I have now learned I shall surely gain
times of the past have been so unforgiving
memories remain of mistakes I have made
but I never really could master the grade
when I felt so low was this worth the living
since all precious moments were cast aside
when loving was never meant to be for me
confidence was not within thoughts to be
'twas just how I felt at that moment inside
I who hath lived through torment and pain
what I have now learned I shall surely gain.

Sacrificial Rites

Devout within a nuns prayer of content
holy sacrificial rituals within her beads
a basket of bread for communial needs
gathers within her arm unto the convent
she walks a lonely road faith by her side
that is sworn upon her oath of chastity
unto her lord she shall abolish all vanity
within this loyalty she prays at eventide
staid in her stature within religious rites
she remains upright with purity of mind
true love for her holiness she shall bind
a pledge of loyalty unto angelic heights.
black is the gown of her holy covenent
as a cross bears the mark of sacriment.

-----

Spirits Of Love

How doth we knoweth if this, our love, shalt be true,
Hast there not been a moment, we both hath known,
With the passing of time, these feelings hast grown,
Incarnate spirits, once again, hast returned anew.
A love which hast been proven thro`tests of time,
With a passion that hast lingered on thro`the ages
Returned once again, to restore, thy olde pages
Of love thro`the past, `tis back to now, in it`s prime.
But true love, shalt ne`er, have cruel words spoken
For a love that is true, shall ne`er runneth smoothe.
But to givest and taketh, to comfort and soothe,
Thy words art kinder, thus to be said unprovoken,
Passionate love with feeling, shalt be softspoken,
So thus, thy circle of love, shalt ne`er be broken.

-----

Sweet Surrender

May love be of a passion that enthral
br>the very thought I cherish deep inside
if only to be within arms opened wide
to hear the sweet whispers lovers call
as his eyes gaze so lovingly unto mine
that all I may feel shall be utterly bliss
as two lips part within a sensual kiss
it is then we experience love divine
'tis then we notice the moonlit skies
how much brighter the stars really are
for two lovers dreams may travel afar
to cherish longingly within loving eyes
how fierce the heat of a lovers trance
to surrender longingly in a final dance.

-----

Tears of Love

How often do tears flow for the one you love
when heart aches follow the path of dreams
this hurt shall not be controlled it seems
for there is no answer from the stars above
why then oh why must there be this sorrow
when a soft word spoken awakened scorn
the moods of senses shall seem forlorn
may it ever be much the same the morrow
back from the past unto an eternal bliss
tears that flow sadly from a broken heart
shall reveal great sorrow of lovers apart.
how may a love as true ever come to this
when in the beginning love had no end
sad tears of love flows freely to amend.

-----

Upon Written Word

Lingering phrases that torment the mind
to be writ upon an aged parchment page
of leaves faded and mellowed with age
softer tones of the past therein shall find
of inborn emotions love shall nurture
vibrant notes deep within a poets heart
eternal love songs that shall ne-er depart
composed with affection for the future
how enchanting as words of love unwind
for the quill of a poet doth lovingly flow
deep feeling within a sonnet doth show
treasures twixt love that e`er shall bind
may this be his gift of a true love token
now as he whispers sweet love unspoken.

Vikings Return

Odin God of all men and father of all
Returns once again upon an ocean breeze
May the long ships sail upon our open seas
Let us hear once more of the vikings call
Warriors from the Norse strength untold
Fierce within battle stood loyal and true
That rowed within boats more than a few
Strength of will stood patriotic and bold
Fiercely threatened yet knew how to love
As they drank, laughed, feasted, as merry
Fruits of the vine crushed from the berry
Upon feasts of a wild boars head thereof
Love of the Norse lands women and song
Shall sing praise unto Odin a life time long.

Comparison of Two Sonnets

Eternal Love (Australian)

My Love for thee shall cherish here within.
For I shall sorely weep if we should part.
Thou dwell so deeply engraved in my heart,
Thus spiritual gifts of love remain therein.
We did but know, we were always together,
At last we have found a true love once more,
This feeling so strong has been here before
We both vowed this love shalt be forever.
Cherished love within an angels prayer
Which had in the beginning without an end.
Not only lovers but two greatest friends
There`s not a thing this life can compare.
These spiritual feelings shalt always remain,
Eternal lovers now both belong once again.

Eternal Love (Shakespeare)

My Love for thee, shall cherish here within.
For I shall sorely weep if we should part.
Thus spiritual gifts of love, remain therein.
Thou dwell so deeply, engraved in my heart.
We did but know, we were always together,
At last we've found true love once more.
We both vowed, this love shall be forever.
This feeling so strong has been here before.
Cherished love within an angels prayer
Which had in the beginning without an end.
There's not a thing this life can compare
Not only lovers, but two greatest friends
These spiritual feelings shalt always remain,
Eternal lovers, now both belong, once again.

As Stars Reflect

Above me hangs the winter's moon of blue
she's gazing out across the midnight sky
to bring a kiss to greet my lover's sigh
and whisper softly of my love for you
And when the bells begin to chime the end
of time; the old is done, and new begun
I wish aloud that you and I be one
on lunar magic I shall now depend.
I wish you were here with me tonight
but dreams of love now seem so far away
my tears return to greet the New Year's Day
and close my eyes beneath the moon's pale light.
I prey you look upon the sky above
for one moment as stars reflect my love.

Empty Streets

Where are the wistful lovers holding hands
As lights expire to the coming of night
Where is the kiss to put the world to right
Against the tide of the modern demands?
The cold hearts that dare not miss the beats
Of time devoured in another warzone
And the romantic soul must dwell alone
While wandering the endless empty streets
Devoid of laughter there is nothing found
With tender thoughts lost in convenience
Yet hope glimmers in the fading distance
As whispers speak over the vacant ground
In words of love the poet makes a dare
With old romance his heart has come to share.

Huntress of the Night

My sacred lady of the lunar night
The starlit goddess bearing hunter’s bow
Her silver beams that share their midnight light
The light that chases through town and meadow
Awaken when the world is deep in sleep
And twilight nymphs come out to play and dance
Huntress through the darkness gently creep
With arrows swifter than a quickened glance
The resting Earth that lies within your shade
Is where I stand to greet your purest smile
And pray you grant me strength to face the trial
As through the glades of mortal life I wade
Pray shed your light upon the darkest scene
Diana, gracious goddess huntress queen

Love, I Dare (Iambic Dimeter)

As waning sun
shall close the day
and stars betray
my heart's undone.
The quilted night,
no solace brings,
her voice ne'er sings
to ease my plight.
Yet, love, I dare
to speak your name
by candle flame
and feel you there.
I long for this
one scented kiss.

Make Merry With My Heart

Between the arches stands a burning flame
A scarlet flare with subtle hints of blue
Where dreams are traced and love divine is drew
As all the sparking embers, spell a name.
Behind carved locks I gaze into the orb,
As mists of time, make merry with my heart
The secret words are said and clouds depart
My destiny I dare not yet absorb.
Repeated questions asked of runes tonight,
Then cards across the table, silence dealt
Before the sacred altar where I'm knelt
I pray to fate for even more insight.
There is so much I want, I need to know
As now I stand before love's portico.

Shakespeare's Dilema

I know why Shakespeare could never compare
His lovely maid to summer's finest day.
There are no words a Bard can find to say,
For you have shown my heart something so rare.
As each aspect of you ignites my soul
In flames that only love and passion see.
There is no door or key to set me free,
Ensnared by words I let my senses roll.
I do not seek to find release, it's true,
For love you make my humble life complete
And lead me here where only lovers meet,
Each time you take my hand to dance with you.
As we allow our bond to now evolve
In love there's no equation left to solve.

Thief of Night

So wild and still, my dreams are coming home,
And like a thief of night my love collects
Where ardent fantasies of thought project
And sleep no longer; love has come to roam.
A pixie cannot sleep alone each night
As now the heart is burned by lover's kiss
And dreams have turned to this empty abyss
The way she sparked my soul; a beacon light.
Alone there is no air or room to breathe,
The ashened walls of night are closing in
As bracing scars of love are etched on skin
When senses cover blades in silken sheathe.
My love, the thief of night, can drink her fill
The huntress takes my heart, now wild and shrill.

Leny Roovers

Answer to Terry's Il percorso sotto le stelle

"For what is love but time just spent in bliss
The path we take is carved by life's scars,"
which can be softened by a heartfelt kiss.
Yet love is much more than passion's delight,
it's sharing and giving right from the heart,
supporting each other when hurts still smart;
it's comfort and warmth between souls, our light.
Each aspect of life gains stature by love,
daily routine loses dullness, steps free,
chores each new day feed our spirit with glee;
we're touched by the grace of a soft-winged dove.
We'll be cleared from guilt with a love like ours,
"When there is nothing above us but stars".

Eventide

Twilight arrived today on velvet feet;
softly its footsteps fell on windswept leaves
as birds took shelter high under the eaves;
all traffic sounds died down in yonder street.
Pink pastels drape the sky in hazy veils,
it's Autumn's night attire on cold days.
These fluffy layers of angels' knit caught rays
of sunlight, patterned into winter tales.
As dusk grows darker, lamp-posts are switched on,
the blackbird sings its last song of the night
before he too seeks refuge for frost's blight.
Even the wind is silent now, withdrawn.
Against the last light of the sky, trees show
in black, bare finely pencilled winter woe.

Wintertide

Outside, a low grey sky bears winter's sign;
most trees have lost their leaves, bare branches raised
as fingers, reaching for lost summer's blaze,
unwilling yet to bow for light's decline.
As darkness wins, the days are growing short
and nights extend into the morning hours
while streets shine black from endless heavy showers.
Inside, we'll make a warm and safe resort,
we'll draw the curtains to keep out the cold,
and build a fire from last autumn's logs.
Here we don't mind the early morning fogs,
our home is like a huge cocoon, enfolds.
I'll cook a nice hot curry for tonight,
we'll eat our dinner by soft candlelight.
