2014 Poetry Form Challenge

#03 Dutch Sonnet

This poetry form was presented by Dutch poet Leny Roovers. It is a unique form in that follows the Italian 8/6 pattern, but makes the statement with a sestet, and then pauses with a couplet which finishes with a sestet statement of a different tempo. Here is the pattern;
a. b. c. c. b. a.. d. d.. e. x. e. f. x. f.
Here is an example.

Honesty

In spring sweet Honesty is dressed in green;
adorned with purple flowers in her hair,
you'll meet her oft in gardens in the shade
preferring her complexion to stay fair,
declining calls upon cosmetics' aide.
In summer, Honesty is meadow's queen,
she might be dressed in lilac or in white,
her countenance is always cheerful, bright.
She wears a flowered cap upon her curls
till autumn sends in cooler nights and rain,
then leaves will dry as wind blows them in swirls.
Now Honesty is choosing hues of brown,
her bones are turning brittle overnight;
as winter comes, there's silver in her crown.

Sleepwalkers

Known paths among the stars
Made by frequent visitations of hearts
Shared by the by in dreams state
Where once you shared similar fate,
Now such a thing can't be a part
Of the scheme of this earth but afar
In an alter dimension on that red planet,
Love would again find it's home was set.
Here there were tears and fears
Because the first one went way
Left you on a broken pier.
Then you found a better face,
It was the one that came to stay
In your minds astral gate of grace.

Sleepwalkers

Sleep under sun lit window
Labor over moon lit radio
Such is your new found rhythm
Roughly dealt schism
Blind to what this day denotes
Time is an uncoiling spindle
Sunset, seaman, rise
And the waves sadly cry
One keeps house and the other is off
Taking turns to guard Caesar
Sometimes weary and crying, Enough!
This home, our life and dream together
Longing for lovers' leisure
With but this day to fight and pleasure

Alone

Comforted only by this semi darkness
As hypnotic flickering candles shine
Sitting here I feel music flow over me
Silently remembering what life used to be
Alone now I sit here drinking my wine
Curious how my life could be such a mess?
Reminiscing about those midnight kisses
Mountains of love now the deepest abyss.
Is fantasy just another world of lies
Can we truly love in this crazy world
What is laughter but the start of sighs?
I tried to talk to you and make amends
Sighs and tears now the truth's unfurled
You won't talk, so how can we be friends?

Beach Dreaming

A rising gentle sea-breeze blows my cares away
There is a welcome change from the hot north now
The birds become more alive up in the boughs.
In that cool welcome breeze the jacaranda's play
The day's heat has moved away from the bay
Somehow clearing away this sweated brow
Enjoying all that wine and good music allows.
I sit back with my glass of cold Chardonnay
Late summer has its own rewards I often find
The schools are back and the kids are gone
Peaceful music now is the reward, so kind.
I lean back and contemplate a line I've written
A gentle wind blows, my mind and soul are one
Feeling the cooling change, I'm no longer bitten.

Celestial Thoughts

And what of stars, are they so far away?
Under them we plan, hope and dream,
In youth what stars shine, and plans make.
Wild things we do and say and risks take.
As stars cease to shine so do our schemes
Realising in time, like us they will decay.
Too late often and one more star blinks out
Such is youth we ignore the loudest shout.
We survive the day and in the evening that is age
We look up and see the sky, some stars are gone
Having survived we are said to be a sage.
Although I would much rather see a fuller sky
In time we realise new ones will have grown
Like all things new stars replace the ones that die.

-----

Epistolic Lies

Where is contentment when the reward is pain
Love makes so many promises, often keeping none.
Cupids arrow is simply the barb it's thought to be
The wounds and scars are there for all to see.
Who has been affected by this, simply everyone
And anyone in love has nought at all to gain!!
So much for movies, so much for music and song
Literature like books and mag's have got it wrong.
With the coming of age, a different view we see
Our values change and we look at love anew
Desire and passion are removed from the debris.
They are cleaned and polished, feeling very fresh
And with that new meet take on a different view
Then with that new person souls ultimately mesh.

Huntsville Visited

The cold lonely night draw swiftly down
Creeping softly in without any sound
As I sleep alone in this distant town.
Covering the world in a deep black gown
I close my eyes, sleep's so easily found
I feel so warm wrapped in this gown
As her loving spirit wraps itself around
Like a blanket keeping me safe and sound.
Distance shrinks in my sleeping pleasure
With feelings shared, tied with silken thread
As I dream and picture warm nights together
Two lover inseparate, joined in love forever
Throughout the night vows of love are said
And with the morning light, love finds leisure.

-----

Jealousy

I'm jealous of midnight's moon glow
Its soft rays kiss you while you sleep
In absentia I wish each one from me.
For those languid eyes I long to see
As the hours so slowly forward creep
I wish I were there beside you now.
Those balmy times we used to know
Make me resent midnight's moon show.
I'm jealous of the night skies closeness
For my fingers ache to touch you again
It's day here and I must be dreamless
But in my distant bed, memories race
As I remember our nights together
I'm jealous as the moon takes my place.

-----

Know Now

Know now that hollow place that is within thee
Once upon a time was known as your loving heart
And ripped out by someone alledged to love thee.
There is no time, there is no place whenst to see
Such a thing would happen that would tear thee apart
Leaving thee with tears like waves on the wildest sea.
How can thee be left in such sorrow and so much pain
I can only promise you, it will never happen again.
Know now I'm here to wipe away your tears and fears
What e'r it takes I am here for you, at your command
And meant to remove all your pain and your tears
What do you desire of life, what is your greatest wish?
What is it of life you wish, what is it that you demand
Tell me now please, must I somnambulistically fish?

-----

New Found Love

Soon the morning sun will light the sky.
Dawn's twilight mood is failing fast
Two lovers wake with sleep filled eyes
Still smiling from last nights revelries.
The avian choir has started to sing at last
Waking them up from where they lie.
The day will be spent apart as is the norm
But come the night there will be a storm.
This is the time for experiment and play
Where two once strangers learn to be one
For new found love was ever this way.
The morning sun smiles as lovers leave
And an eternity together has begun
Knowing they'll be back again this eve.

-----

Out of a Void

Out of a void my love has grown
A cosmic speck, a minute grain
A celestial being that has won my soul
Two separate beings who've made a whole
Finitely created this heavenly domain
From out of nothing that seed was sown
Not of wood, nor steel, nor brick or stone
But a pulsing heart, inside flesh and bone
Made of love, to protect and warm
From timeless space you've won my heart
No roof of tile to shelter from harm
My life and love I dedicate to thee
And time or distance will never part
Wishing to be with you for all eternity.

-----

Sombre Memories

You were always privy to my heart
Never ever mine, how could you be
Those days together long since gone
Each precious moment I still dwell on
Our hearts linked, you were part of me
A special time that now seems so short.
Our times together so bittersweet
Time had wings when ere we'd meet
I still listen now "Cant fight this feeling"
Time apart, I listened to your song
Wondering why my hearts not healing
Time and tide wont mend this heart
Knowing to someone else you belong
It will always hurt whilst we're apart.

-----

Tragic Memory

A tragic memory strikes me of too long ago
It is part of me, an instinct my mind ignores
I see her now lying there asleep in our bed.
Too long, when now I remember what was said.
Away too long and time has closed so many doors
Jealousy o'rcomes the lessons learned as we grow.
The sins of others come back to rule the night
And innocence, and peace defend their right.
Now in times we remember too well the past
This time rather sinned against than sinner
Was it too optimistic to think that it would last?
But still the pain is there, never the less.
And proves to all a loser is not a grinner
Over it once, to become another mess.

-----

Wine's Watch

I watch you from within my spirit being
Cradled in your ever dreaming care
Desirous of your waking presence
And my need to ever taste your essence.
Seeing you there makes me aware
Of the intemperance that we are freeing.
You are like a matured wine that I will sup
Wishing that you forever will fill my cup.
Intemperance through love no fault of mine
But my sober soul to yours I now attach.
Drunk through love there’s no headier wine
For with both, they will our senses snatch
Now whilst I sleep I know all will be fine,
Whilst love's flame keeps its warmed watch.

-----

Yesterdays Wind

The skin warming kiss of the wind
Blew my mind across a year or ten,
I wonder was it love or simply deja vu,
That the wind of yesterday blew
You looked at me, I saw your eyes soften
Taking me back when we were twinned.
I promised there would never be tears
And never was through all the years.
Then truth and love was all we sought
We met, you smiled and I was lost
My heart and soul were so easily bought.
Though we're autumn, our love's still in spring
From time to time on rough seas we're tossed
We've no worries about what winter'll bring.

Mirror of Senses

The Five Senses by Hans Makart
(image from the Belvedere Museum)

Sight: the first sense

Your reflection in that mirror
Wondering what is it in you I see?
Each time we pass I must look at it
Each time we meet and recommit
What lurks there what can it be
Do your eyes hide your sorrow.
Your love with me you so beguile
When you look at me your eyes smile.
Then I see only two more mirrors
Suddenly things change it all clears
Returning once more their colours.
My inquisition they do not admit
It looks like you have lost your fears
But I will only see what you permit.

-----

Sound: the second sense

Your reflection in that mirror
What's the depth of your love. I wonder
It silently turns to me, still with a smile
No sound from your alter ego to beguile
I wonder sometimes am I your lover
Sometimes it sounds like I hear sorrow.
The vows of love you will not speak
And yet my love of you is so complete.
Please say those three exquisite words
Your eyes say it, why can't your lips,
If only your reflection could be heard.
I wish I could hear words come from it
But it could never say what I want it to
For I will only hear what you permit.

-----

Smell: the third sense

Your reflection in that mirror
I sniff and sense you what is the odour?
Its scent, more fragrant than any rose
It's what I expected really I suppose
Something not bought from any vendor
Or created during any winds billow
Clean, showered and freshly soaped
This reflection doesn't bring me hope
This glass image contains no essence
Just bland and unscented nothing at all
Nothing to compare to your presence.
That tangy bouquet I wonder where is it
It is not contained in a mirror on the wall
Again I can smell only what you permit.

-----

Taste: the fourth sense

Your reflection in that mirror
What tasty flavour does it contain
Will my tongue savour every morsel
As we kiss realise that I'm only mortal
Desire for your taste drives me insane
With every moment I feel hunger grow.
There's not the mouth watering desire
To taste that meal so redolent of fire.
Of saltiness I know why there is none
The taste there is naught but bland
And flavoured loves juices are gone.
There's no finer meal than you I admit
A drink or meal, you taste more grand
But I can only taste what you permit.

-----

Taste: the fourth sense

Your reflection in that mirror
What tasty flavour does it contain
Will my tongue savour every morsel
As we kiss realise that I'm only mortal
Desire for your taste drives me insane
With every moment I feel hunger grow.
There's not the mouth watering desire
To taste that meal so redolent of fire.
Of saltiness I know why there is none
The taste there is naught but bland
And flavoured loves juices are gone.
There's no finer meal than you I admit
A drink or meal, you taste more grand
But I can only taste what you permit.

-----

Touch: the fifth sense

Your reflection in that mirror
How is it possible to make your heart feel
Whereabouts is it possible to touch you
This cannot be the lover that I knew
It is too neutral in its shape to appeal
Even to the most besotted lover.
This impostors image in the mirror
Has nothing that is worth to consider.
When how well I know your softness
The way your body moulds into mine
Felt your warm wet lips so soft to kiss
It has not your love, that special vite.
It shows your shape and familiar form
Bit I will only touch what you permit.

-----

Soul: the sixth sense

Your reflection in that mirror
Are you my Juliet and I your Romeo
Unseeing the light that your soul emits
What is it I see, what do you permit?
What painful secrets should l not know
Must you forever hide your sorrow?
What lurks behind your lovely smile
Am I the lover that you wish to beguile?
You are a Mona Lisa looking so enigmatic
Now you turn to me, see two more mirrors
Why to give yourself, is it so problematic;
Is it your love for me that you must admit
Please remember I am your eternal lover
What am I allowed to see, what do you permit?

Courting of Senses

Of beauty within that eyes cannot see.
Shall reveal outward of inner passion
That shall touch the heart of another
As souls embrace within love forever
That may ever redeem of satisfaction
Thus senses within shall remain as free
A fragrance shall linger to induce charm
Of inner warmth that shalt do no harm
When loving thoughts shall nigh expose
Of a potent wine that doth overly flow
As the spirits run free this feeling grows
When parted lips shall sup within haste
As this heavenly nectar of spirits show
Hence the final senses may relish taste.

-----

Diet Failed

Liquorice sticks, toffee apples aniseed pears
Candy floss and scrumptious Edinburgh rock
Peanut brittle along with honeycomb candy
All we did purchase there was fine an dandy
And very rare they should run out of stock
Where confectioners had show fine wares
Sour plums sticky toffee taken from a jar
Many folk shall say such enticement by far
Confectionary aint what it used to once be
Yet kids round the block still purchase more
Sugar mice and gob stoppers on a sugar spree
For the kids those days their teeth were few
Until one by one they decayed to the core
Toffee wrappers lolly sticks blown astrew.

-----

Eden Revisited

Such sadness prevails when lovers depart
With feelings of emptiness deeply within
That shall fail upon a pledge of devotion
Cast aside an eternity of deep emotion
How shall this love so destined to begin
Prevail within future with a broken heart
Why must this be when lovers once true
Had blessed the past as true love grew
No tears prevailed within loves divinity
Love within eyes had spoken of promise
To love once more and reach for eternity
Forgiveness of sorrow shalt not go amiss
To pledge as before shall be of affinity
Within an eternal love of heavenly bliss.

-----

Forbid Not

Shalt not this veil hide tenderness within
That I within my thoughts dare not show
I hath sworn on oath to remain demure
But how within love shall I ever be pure
How deep the feeling of love may grow
That may nigh be declared a carnal sin
Casting aside the powers of seduction
Of good intentions without corruption
That may be embracing an eternal love
There is no sin upon loving humanity
To surrender complete thy self thereof
Behind this veil shows hidden tenderness
Casting those spells of a sacred vanity
Yet within love sacredness shall bless.

-----

The Fumbler

Must hands that fumble within the dark
Caress without knowing where they are
Shall it be then the stars turn a blind eye
And disclose of moonshine upon the sky
But hands cannot reach down from afar
Unless they develope the wings of a lark
Why must wandering hands fumble at all
With inward directions available to call
If only a fumbler knew what he was at
There may be no more slow hesitation
To touch was a touch and that was that
There is no peculiarity whatever the cost
No cause for a nervous demonstration
Else all that is gained may surely be lost.

-----

Lost Senses

My eyes are dim and I cannot see
I have lost my sense of direction
I share no speach devoid of sound
I feel no vibration of noise around
How do I gain a sense of protection
When my senses shall never be free
I shall not feel a lovers soft touch
When a sense of feelings lost as such
Nor shall I speak when I have no voice
For not a thing shall make sense at all
If I only had sense to make a choice
Tho' senseless I am could this be so
It maybe I could make me a final call
And pray my senses return as they go

-----

No Mans Land

To be cast aside from mans dominion
Upon a desert Island across the sea
An outcast to all thou hath beknown
Deserted within a lifetime has shown
That inner spirits shall ever break free
Unto a different outlook and opinion
No man is an island nor shall he thrive
His needs are more to remain as alive
May he be the start of a new evolution
That shall induce another as a woman
Or may it only cause the first revolution
This islands creation of a perfect peace
Shall not be of a woman nor of a man
To apply misfortune may only increase.

-----

Of Beast And Man

What lies beneath this path we walk upon
May time reveal history of a past decade
The future predicts it shall show the way
When past thro' present returns this day
Artifacts of ancient times that never fade
That which was lost within time had gone
Shall return thro' the future from the past
Then all shall be revealed as earth is cast
What wonders shall be when all beknown
Of what was treasured for the future
When archeologists of this time had shown
What lay beneath this ancient path of old
That of man and of prehistorical creature
Thus if not excavated shall remain untold.

-----

Of Eternity

Upon words of love I longingly declare
This worthiness of passion deep within
Depraved not of affection so worthy of
Nor virtue within the tranquility of love
Where desirous dreams remain therein
That eternity of love shalt openly share
But harmonious passion so unrestrained
An emphasis together shall be attained
Engraved deep within their loving touch
Shall mirror within eyes for all to see
That informs all how they love so much
Within an eternal star that shines above
For an eternity which was destined to be
Nigh unto the future cherished thereof.

-----

Of Vintage Wine

As golden fruits fall upon an earthen floor.
When the seasonal autumn winds doth blow
So sweet the juices of the summers bloom
Of vintage wine that warms a winters gloom
Festive days when celebrations shall bestow
Wine tasting shall only be induced with more
That shall warm the hearts of youth and aged
As merriment within the samplers rampaged
Cast aside their purely unvalued statistics
Think not of the after effects that may arise
When maidens along with men are paraletic
For days of maternal instincts are cast aside
When a vintage wine shall blur drunken eyes
Gone the days when maidens kept their pride.

-----

Rebirth Of Spring

Come hither thy seasonal harmony of Spring.
That follow the wild winters bitter cold wind
Come delight within harmony of natural bliss
Within the blessings of a dawns morning kiss
Hence rebirth of Spring shalt fare thee kind
Whispers of feathers from birds on the wing
That calls to a mate sweet notes from above
For Springtime is a season that calls for love
Sweet the maid who adorns her floral crown
Woven`midst sunlight upon meadows reborne
Fresher than a daisy within natures new gown
Blythe in her stature she skips within trance
Upon golden meadows from newly sprung corn
She sings her sweet words of love and romance.

Ostaras Maiden - Michele Lee Phelan.

-----

Sense of Feelings

I cannot show the hurt I feel inside
For my inner feelings shall not reveal
What I may not be prepared to show
When this love may not too easily flow
It is all according to this pain I feel
Hurt shall not share space within pride
Nor shall my sense of feelings pretend
For love had never been mine to defend
Cast aside I who never really mattered
Lost within a maze of dejected feeling
With my dreams of love ever shattered
Broken hearted I was destined to be
Lowering pride to the point of kneeling
I pray return this love yearned by me.

-----

Solitude Within Fantasy

So tender the heart when love is unspoken.
Suffering of despair and remorse imposed
Inflicted on an unsuspected regretful mind
When the burden of solitude was so unkind
Pain beknown mirrors within eyes disclosed
Vexation of spirits shall never be unbroken
What was once a voluptuous pleasant reunion
Remains mortified within inflicted conclusion
Shall displeasure of remorse be of a concern
An uneasiness of vexation in an unsettled mind
May it be of pleasure and tranquillity I yearn
If I may once more rejoice upon exhileration
Voluptious sensations within spirits shall bind
Harmonious within loves blessed combination.

-----

Virginal Maidens

What cruel fate shall await the innocent
The unknown that tempts them forthwith
Those who are merry not knoweth of fate
With what may occur that could be too late
For mishaps heard to them may be a myth
Dark shadows endowed as sunlight went
That descended down t`wards their gloom
Of this dark damp forbidding cellar room
That tortures of the mind body and soul
Within damnation their minds are all lost
Upon an evil deed that fate cannot control
Of wicked tortures that drove them insane
That were within their stance to exhaust
Shades of the past then rendered pain.

Listening

Still in the womb, we hear our mother's voice,
and all the other sounds her body makes;
there is still one, if which we both are part.
When birth is imminent, her water breaks,
its flow a signal children must depart
to start a separate life, a followed choice.
Most babies start with crying for what's lost,
the search for Eden thus begun, will cost.
Hearing a mother sing will bring it close,
and other senses help to reach this goal:
find beauty in life's poetry and prose.
There is no turning back after your birth,
you live to learn after that line's been crossed;
listening within, draws near Eden's worth.

-----

Sight (Variation)

I look into my eyes on mirror's face,
somehow they haven't changed as much as me;
they still show wonder at the world around
and joyful laughter when I'm feeling free.
Yet all too often now they are cast down
as trust and doubt shift on a reckless pace.
Only within I can relax, find peace,
untangle too tight bonds, defy decrease.
As new-found energy is chasing off mind's clouds,
warm light brings comfort with a swift release
from nightmare's death-filled tombs and clinging shrouds.
From deep inside new words rise up and break
through layers of disappointment and old pain.
My fingers find the keys, I am awake.

-----

Smell

We need our sense of smell to choose a mate,
not just the way he looks or how he talks,
but how he feels and tastes is paramount:
if he smells wrong, we'd definitely baulk!
we'd never let him near, for no amount.
A good scent in our nose, works as a bait...
we sniff and breath in deeply, look around
to follow odour's trail, till he is found!
Five senses build a union that may last,
that first close look will tell us if we match.
Exploring mind and body, spells are cast.
Each new discovery strengthens our bond,
we get to know each other's secret sound
in pleasuring the one of whom we're fond.

-----

Touch

With just one fingertip on tender skin
anticipation rides on crested waves
of pleasure, swiftly rising to its peak.
Fulfilment now, is what my body craves
as climax comes with liberating shrieks.
We're feeling one and rest entwined within.
Sleep comes on velvet feet, takes us away;
on dreamy meadows we relive our play.
On waking up, we smile, caress and kiss,
our movements gentle- languor lingers still-
there is no urge in joyful reminisce.
Our daily chores are brightened by our love,
we share a shower, our morning cafe,
as even the sun smiles down from above.

-----

Waiting

As icicles of words have pierced my skin
I'm waiting for spring's sun to thaw my heart.
Imprisoned behind frozen locks of steel
I can't initiate a quick restart.
When paralyzed by talk, I stopped to feel-
just silence offers peace to rest within.
Loud voices scratched my nerves and hurt my soul,
it feels like ages since I last felt whole.
My sleep is harassed by bad, death filled dreams
I can't explain, I'm weary and on edge:
why feels my world more angry than it seems?
Next week my life will change as work will end,
the empty days ahead I can't control
I wonder if our days will learn to blend.
