2014 Poetry Form Challenge
#16 Burns Sonnet
Burns seemed to experiment for a while with sonnet form, but seems to have settled with his
form; "A Sonnet Upon Sonnets". This is only a slight deviation from the English form but a complete
disregard of Iambic Pentameter, which was as different to him as French or German.
Here is the rhyme scheme. a. b. a. b...c. d. d. c...e. f. f. e...g. g..
and write wi a Scottish accent ye ken.
A Sonnet upon Sonnets
Fourteen, a sonneteer thy praises sings;
What magic myst'ries in that number lie!
Your hen hath fourteen eggs beneath her wings
That fourteen chickens to the roost may fly.
Fourteen full pounds the jockey's stone must be;
His age fourteen--a horse's prime is past.
Fourteen long hours too oft the Bard must fast;
Fourteen bright bumpers--bliss he ne'er must see!
Before fourteen, a dozen yields the strife;
Before fourteen--e'en thirteen's strength is vain.
Fourteen good years--a woman gives us life;
Fourteen good men--we lose that life again.
What lucubrations can be more upon it?
Fourteen good measur'd verses make a sonnet.

It Was You
You were in a dream that I had
And we were staring at each other
In a crowded theater all mad
Midst chaos and din another
Moment in time carved by lovers,
Frame by frame or oil pastels
Frozen forever 'tween glass covered
These pressed leaves and petals;
Sap rising in our sugar maples
Sharing the rains growing our roots
Deeper than reddest orchards apples
Love blooms in shaded peaceful spots,
Dreamt and remembered like the first
Time we kissed to quench its thirst.
Just stay home, don't get out of bed,
If the boss calls unplug the telephone,
Electronic sources far from your head
So when noggin feels like a cone
Take some valerian with herbal tea,
Listen to soft music and hum
To release your mind from the drum,
Letting pain ease naturally.
Trying not to think too much at all
Changing worries into peaceful slumbers
No adding up all hours or numbers
Since man creates things which stall
Good things or joyous dreams of love,
Tieing down those who follow stars above.
Power of Twelve
Beginning to let go of the old
Make room for the new to progress
Is only as hard as you're bold
Enough to try to do, no less.
Honey doesn't exist without aid
Of the bees industrious work,
Settling down only in moonlight
Rising up at dawn they quick perk,
Whilst we grind our daily sips
A rush of intentions anew begins,
Heady brew enriching our spins
Another round of work a day trips,
No shirk allowed to creative spark
Nor years of neglect must ne'er park!

And Then the Angel Sinned
Innocence is behind her, a light aura
Into this strange palace of primal growth
Yet her beauty outreaches any of the flora
Angel or no, I have given her my troth
Sins follow us on our forbidden route
We greeted them each time we took a rest
Entering into a new world with each caress
And temptation offered us forbidden fruit.
So forbidden, this fruit of the new world
We experience the new sense of desire
The more we resist the temptation flies higher
And the more our insides become twirled.
Clench your jaws it is now the time of birth
Now perhaps wondering, what has it all been worth.
At River Bank
At river bank with its hues of green
We did not know that first time
Midst hills and trees a perfect scene
Our love would grow so sublime.
We happily talked and fell in love
As our love grew we did not mean
To cause others pain, or to demean
But hurt we did and were guilty of.
We sat and talked on a bank of green
I touched your face no longer mine
And we drove away that final time
Sadly knowing what should have been.
That day two lonely people left the scene
At river bank with its hues of green.
Blessings From A Rose
The day dies with the coming of night
In the darkness comes the earth's blanket
Lovers lie warmed, feeling loves might
Night after night simply fill loves basket.
It started in spring as all love stories state
With that coming just a single rose grows
Promises to the girl a boy picks that rose
And in accepting that girl becomes his mate.
T'was not an idle promise accepted by her heart
Heaven never accepts that are made this way
Something was added with that promise to stay
One of love and Eternity, promises never to part
The heat from a rose should never be dismissed
For who can deny ought when lovers have kissed.
The circle begins as we are born
Life takes off on its lessons again
Like a new day begins with dawn
For some it's pleasure others pain.
Meeting others whose paths we cross
As life plays out its lessons again
Scenery changes the cast the same
Making sense finally out of chaos.
The circle ends when we are unborn
Sanity and wisdom away we toss
Bodies and minds we no longer boss.
Others make decisions and are torn.
Lives go on and on towards eternity
Until Nirvana, where we aim to be.
Everything to Me
You came into my dreams with your smile
Waking me up from the lethargy of life
That look would eternally beguile
Any man, and destine him to an afterlife.
In search of that one look, that time again
Would beg you to repeat for him alone,
Knowing full well your heart is not of stone
Would repeat that smile and win your swain.
Having won your prize, think nothing less of this
Wilfully ignoring what fate has in store
You now possess my heart and soul and more
How easy was I won, with just a simple kiss
But I will not be your abject slave, no way!
Knowing finally, what that look had to say.
Il Tuo Gusto (Your Taste)
I am a shark circling waiting for you
In time you will show your weaknesses.
I am that dirty little boy you knew
That keeps looking up your pretty dresses.
My smile is wide and inviting,
But my eyes are oh so black and cold,
A clear soul window so black, so old
You won't notice it until I am feeding.
I can smell your blood miles away
I am drawn to you by your panic
I circle smiling realising you're manic
Realising today is finally my feast day
Thinking of how good you will taste
And you do, there will be no waste.
A can nae write wi a true Jocks patter
For 'am an Aussie wi a love o' poetry
But ye ken a wonder does tha matter
Each time a write a feel like a won the lottery
Dunnut expect me tae tell ye aboot
Ma feelings fer ye cause a feel stupid
An I dinna believe in a fella called cupid
Specially when his height was a foot.
When he fires an arra straight in yer hart
Yer flat on the groond, an yer ded
Yer cannae deny 'tall what I jus sed
An that's a certun for all lovers tae part
So believe me when a say a loves ye lass
An will more an more as the years'll pass.
Life is Events
Life is events repeated time and again
It does not mean that you are content
Just that events form some sort of chain
What is life but one after another events?
Those events will happen until time's end
But isn't that the basic source of refrain
Is anything missed by the choice to abstain
For like a cocktail it depends on the blend.
Or is it more about what is the main intent
Dependant on where you are, what you do
Just sitting there watching a turning screw
Passive, uninterested or caring what's meant.
A miserable existence if you believe that's so
I believe in "Carpe diem" seize the day; Go!
Are my memories of you now any less?
Passing time cannot change my mind
With your love I am twice blessed
As looking deep inside myself I find.
Even when alone at morn when I wake
I feel you by me still; your warmth is there
My hand moves and feels your breast so bare
And as I kiss I feel your body shake.
Even though awake my eyes are closed
My hands and body tells me what it knows
I feel you move as inside as my love grows
Why open them, is the question posed?
So each night as I sleep in a strange bed alone
I close my eyes and in reality I’m in our home.
Tonight is the new moon for this month
Not ashamed just shy, wondering what.
She'll hide within the clouds, just disappear
Making it difficult to be optically caught.
Twenty eight days she will be with us
Growing from a virgin to a teasing tart,
So easily will she learn her natural art
And about all this philosophers will discuss.
Lovers will plight their troth under her
Some will smile at her and ask her blessing
Whilst some to their lovers will be professing
And the unloved cynic will ignore, not care.
Although a virgin she'll be the Earths mother
And all those in love would have no other.
As I'm looking out to the pinking east,
I see grey clouds begin to hide the rising sun,
Moving effortlessly like a prowling beast
And once more a mid-winter day's begun.
A joyous cacophony overcomes my mood,
As red breasted Galahs celebrate the morn.
My face shows my awe, rejoicing this dawn
As the flight heads out in its search for food.
Thinking of the obstacles I must face soon
A slight hesitation before the scene unfolding
We are all driven by our internal moulding
Realising all will be well by late afternoon.
Now I am in control and know what life/s for
And picking up my bag, I head to the door.
Preludio ad un Bacio (Prelude to a Kiss)
As I look at you held so safely in my arms,
Looking into your dark eyes is like looking
At a candle and surrendering to its charms
Without scent I still find you to be hooking.
I see your eyes close and then even so covered
I feel them holding me like a snake's charms
But this time there's no cause to have alarms
Knowing your desires for a while I hovered.
Our lips touch and creates magic so benign
The dull day takes on a far different hue.
The day lights up and, the sky blues, bluer
As I feel your soft warm lips melt on mine.
When you kiss, you cannot hide yourself
As souls unite in a commitment to loss of self.
I cannot hold on to what I couldn't find
I couldn't find strength without love
Or couldn't find love because I was blind
Even though you are all I can think of.
Without you I am completely alone
I'd forgotten what pain could be hidden.
In that loneliness I did not know when
Loves lifeline would, could be thrown.
As the darkness shielded my vision
It enabled me to block out the rusty bits
Of a broken memory that no longer fits
With this new sight I've made a decision.
As I close my eyes a new sight envelops me
Though blind what better sight than of thee.
Mine is not to pursue, nor is it to entice,
But realise a realm exists not of human
We are not aware of what is good or nice
And our life is not measured in your span.
We cannot stand the day when it is light
Instead we hunt at night for a human fool
Because drinking human blood is our rule
See the silhouette against the moon this night.
Hear the subtle beat of leathered wings
Too late, you have ventured in my world
As I bite and suck feel your life come twirled
For up here I can see what misery it brings.
Looking down after I see an empty shell
One more soul is added to the ranks of Hell.
It was another sunny day, another time.
It was autumn, the tourists had gone away.
Slightly warmer perhaps for this clime
We had decided this was the place to stay.
Each morning together walking along the beach
Stopping awhile to skim a stone or steal a kiss
Such were our days and such was our bliss.
Then chase on again to run just out of reach
Daily drives to tourist traps and shopping malls
Or spend a day driving visiting old friends
Too soon time calls "Quit" and all this ends
And the nights of love where I was enthralled
Driving back with a Guinness smile and a memory
Through mists of time remembering what used to be.

How now my young brown cow
Cast not a mess within the yard
Nor mooo unless its high brow
When leaving all thy calling card
Nor let thy speach as languid be
With an accent that is not proper
If ye be a pedigree or a pauper
Thy words shall be to all as free
There is no accent in the land
Upon memory of the farm beast
No distinctions to say the least
Creatures learn to understand
For the differences within class
Are of suttle moments that pass.
Hey Noo Broon Coo
The Bonnie Doon
Here grows a bonnie purple bloom
Upon the heath of banks and braes
Where thistles frae the North strays
Midst gold boughs of yellow broom
Merging with the blooming heather
That creeps within the flow'ry thorn
Binding sheaves from golden corn
Time pass'ed when love did tether
Hurt had taken a dove from a dove
Broken of heart and weak of wing
Silence upon song they never sing
For past spirits shall not deny love
But return back to the future soon
Back from past to the Bonnie Doon.
Bushes and Briars
She cast her weary eyes upon the land
A lass who arose from the early dawn
The land was all she could understand
Tho`hard the earth to be tilled upon
Oft times a maiden shalt a milken go
Whilst laddies be afightin`in fields
Where thee red poppies seed yields
As the great winds of war shall blow
Shall they ere come home once again
She looks towards a far off horizon
When sun is down the moon is arisen
Shall she stand another night in pain
Keepin`thee old home fires a burnin`
When all thee time she be a yearnin
Cursed Evils that plague the mind of pain
Tortured beyond the brinks of humanity
That cast forth a wicked evil mind insane
Darker of thoughts plagued upon insanity
Fear of the unknown from this dark abyss
Capturing vanity from the feeble of mind
To instil within like a toxic vaporised kind
The voluptious venom from the devils kiss
Forked of tongue that shall prey on desire
That preys upon weak unsuspected victims
Within an inflamed inferno of eternal fire
That captures the unsuspected futile mind
Then lures his prey where none may find.
Dancing With The Devil
Heather Oan Th' Heath
Wild th' heather that grows sae wild
Upon th' Grampian hills o'Scots land
That cast nae a shadow be it as mild
Wi'in mither natures land unmanned
Sae bonnie th' hues that blend wi`in
Th' hill tap slopes sae softly o' green
Whaur joys o'elation kin ever be seen
As low lands end whaur beauty begins
Upon pride 'n' faith tae a' wha dwell
Upon th' homeland o' th' scottish gael
Wha's inward courage shall ne'er fail
Deep wi`in a bardic voice lyrics tell
O' bygane battles o' auld Scots land
Fought wi'pride frae an ancient clan.
Laddie V Maddie
Mac Pherson oor braw wee laddie
Toiled hard upon his faithers land
T'was all he could e-er understand
Sin 'he failed as a lad for Maddie
He was nae lover for a braw lassie
Too young tae ken the difference
Naething he couldna recompense
A bridal suite sae fine and classy
For both near the end of the day
Couldna play snakes and ladder
His wee Maddy only got madder
What more can a braw laddie say
If he plays she would surely win
And that in itsel 'twould be a sin.
Tell tale lines that speaketh of age
Cast deep within a frown from past
Worry with hardship shall assuage
A lifetime of each tear to be cast
Within this planet so unforgiving
Naught ventured nothing gained
Deep in thy heart forever rained
When fantasies of life forbidding
How can this be for thy crave love
When darker clouds rain upon thee
No warmth within to set thee free
No suns rays to caress from above
Shall the agony of pain ever recover
To remain as one with earth forever.
North Winds Blaw
I'd wollow in the mud spill'd e'rth
All thee wiles Mither she wunder
Did ma wee lassie lay down under
For all thee worrie upon thee burth
Worrie wisnae as bad as awe that
For shee bee quick in the cummen
Shee gies her thanks tae nae men
Fer the burth O' a cheeky wee brat
A'nae be burthen a brither at awe
Fer a 'canna find he anither faither
A guid man doesnae want a blether
When thee Northern winds do blaw
'Tis a man that bringeth thee haggis
An'a wee laddie he gi'en nae bliss.
Whatever do children get up to
When there is nobody around
A mischief shall ever be bound
Even a simple thing like a shoe
As the inner sole is discovered
What magic in a mind appeals
Ingenious in the way he feels
When simplicity is uncovered.
His imagination is way beyond
Mostly when he does a mishief
Way beyond their parents belief
Yet the cannot help but be fond
A laugh makes it all much better
Within his plans of Odour Eaters.
Love shall touch yin mair time
Wi' passion sae deep cast wi`in
Kin it be anither poem o' rhyme
Or shall it nae end fore it begins
shall future presence whisper a'
That predicted skies may offer
May be tae return tae a coffer
Whin th' forenicht curtains fall
As Fortuin kin reveal in th' star
Whit wi `in future haes in store
Fortuin shall whisper frae afar
O' loue that be of a future lore
Thare is nae spirit tae fade away
Yet united again whaur thay lay.
The Waltz Goes On
Autumn leaves waltzing in a breeze
Softly of touch that melts the heart
Within a mystical notation of trees
As a lovers waltz shall never depart
They may be lost in a trance of love
Deeply within eyes there is no other
Upon dreams shalt be both together
As the warmth of their bodies prove
Nature and love are of earths tempo
Within the sensuality of their dance
Enhancing loves charms unto trance
That shall forever reach a crescendo
Which close together shall rely upon
When the waltz of love still goes on.
He rode thee highlands flowery thorn.
Thro' thistle down and purple heather
From lowlands where his self was born
Within a bitter snow's wint'ry weather
He seeks to find saving awe the sheep
Buried deep upon thee hillsides adrift
As thee snow tumbles it's daylight shift
For night time befalls of shadows deep
Forming shades of thee northern lights
That flicker profusely all o-er thee sky
Shalt make non thee wiser ere to deny
Twas mother nature beaming delights
Unto thee bard composed within word
And a constant lover from all accord.
Wheel of Fortune
There is sadness within my voice
Tears stain face frae a heartache
But blessed be for my ain sake
Mayhaps it was ne-er by choice
Hurt and sorrow wont go astray
But I shall not fail to love again
Even tho` I shall bear much pain
When heartache has the final say
Yet it may take just a little longer
Memories pass as time moves on
If there is a shoulder to lean upon
Consolation is bliss, heart stronger
Giving way to all the hurt and pain
As the wheel of fortune turns again.
Ye Heady Brew
Cast thee weel ye rantin rovin een
Tis`for a lassie thee hast forsaken
Yea whilst thou manlihood preen
Canst thou see her heart be taken
For thy love of a lassie be o`bliss
Nought canst staund in thee way
Love be wanton aye `pon her say
E`er be thine wi`a wee fond kiss
Bide thy time no rantin`or ravin`
Thy genteel touch ere be as true
Nae mind fer thee whiskey brew
For `tis love that she wants savin`
Philanderer aye thou mon ever be
Sae gratified bye thee love of she.

Cold Hard Fear
Behind the veil, from darkness looking out
Distant oblivion now seems to be near
I heard a child scream and a mother shout
Before the embrace of my cold hard fear
My life confined within a prison cell
The door is open; I cannot go through
Restricted by dreams I cannot undo
Lost inside my mind where the demons dwell
And I look out onto an empty street
Always those voices coming from below
They never leave me, they've nowhere to go
And in this moment I only retreat
But guardians of fear can't hold me down
For out of the night a man claims his crown.
The cool caress of chains on eager skin
A brief pause before the touch of the whip
Igniting the hunger of lust within
A burning desire as the senses slip
As passions want on an intimate sigh
While yielding sinews plead for one kiss
Outside the rain falls concealing our bliss
Outside is gone as we reach a new high
The heat of the moment mixed with cool air
As nerves in contrast are demanding more
The need and want surge through every pore
Revealing all in an unhindered stare
And after when all has been said and done
There is love and love is the only one.
The door slammed shut, I was alone again
With thoughts for friends and darkness my comfort
Watching the place where my body was slain
My spirit watches without a consort
I see the killers as they come and go
I've watched them grow old over many years
The pain of age has brought them nought but tears.
And I'll watch them fade and die very slow.
Until their ghosts are all that's left to find
I'll watch without a tear upon my heart
And once their gone I'll say goodbye; depart
I may be unjust, I may be unkind
Did they stop to think when they left me dead
With the axe they buried deep in my head?
Innocent eyes attempt to make some sense
When first awoken by first breaths of air
Beneath the waves of lace without pretence
Two identities but never a pair.
And as we grew so the torment began
One kept the other hidden deep within
How can two share the same flesh, bone and skin
With a girl holding the dreams of a man?
Those dreamy thoughts hidden so deep inside
Unable to talk to the closest friend
Over the years a tattered dream transcends
Into the words that too often confide
That a soul cannot be forever wrong
And must follow the path to make him strong.
Poetry of Childhood
The words that told the tales of teddy bears
A world of magic spells and fairy dreams
That time of love, joy and innocent cares
And nothing appears to be as it seems
Each story scribed on pages of a book
And covers shine as they're placed on a shelf
The secret home of a pixie or elf
As eager young minds want to take a look
A boy in green, my hero, Peter Pan
And climbing on the wishing chair to fly
There's nonsense verse to make a rabbit cry
While grinning cats have a different plan
Long lost dreams; they never seem to disburse
The memories found in a childhood verse
When The Moon Has Gone
Alone, how does the soul let go of pain
While tossing and turning, knowing no sleep
When it runs so deep it touches each vein
When it hurts so much you can't even weep.
How do you push memories faraway
So they are nothing but a glimpse of thought
Why are these life lessons so seldom taught
When dwelling in visions of yesterday.
Where is the sunlight when the moon has gone
Behind the dark clouds of our darkest fear
Who is there to wipe away the last tear
When it's over and the living is done
Yet still we remain within mortal hell
Unless we kick back and ring our own bell

I'm just a woman from the Netherlands
Who cannot speak the native Scottish tongue;
So to meet this latest challenge demands
I'll follow the way Burn's sonnets are strung.
You'll have to excuse the English I use
Though not as soft sounding as Highland's song,
It still flows gentle as words come along-
Thoughts captured on paper sometimes seduce.
I'm not a romantic, my mind dissects,
Admires the rules of rhyme scheme and form
Freedom is found in limitation's norm.
This Robert Burns' sonnet means to connect
Apart from there being no Scot's accent,
I hope there will be nothing to lament.
