2018 Poetry Form Challenge
#12 Busta Sonetto
This form is based on the Envelope Quintet, and comprises of two quintets and one quatrain in any order.
Three versions come to mind with perhaps the inclusion of a repeat line or lines, that I'm sure any innovative
poet can have a lot of fun with. Shown below is the first idea the Teagan De Danaan played around with.

In the still of the night as I wander dark halls
I still sense a movement in time with mine.
I stop and listen curious about what it could be
But all seems still here everything feels fine
As I pass darkness' hidden pictures on the walls.
But as much as I stop and listen it evades me
No Earthly form could be here this special night
No spirit either for they to have been distracted
And all forms but me have taken a special flight
Then I hear a noise, curious, what can it be
Then I smell it near, to me it's been attracted
Now I see it moving, a shadow on the wall
Moving closer, I see a sight that would appall
My heart stops, from life I've been subtracted
Did you see me, were you sleeping as well?
Were we together, or was I really alone,
Simply dreaming about you, and what of you,
Snuggling against me, like we were home
Causing me to wake from this dream so swell?
Believe me, it's the last thing I wanted
I really didn't want to, not then, not right then.
Why do all the words I use, seem trite, used
Too many oft repeated phrases intrude my ken
And old memories replace wishes granted.
It seems as if there is too much magic blown
That I do not understand, and when I dreamt
I wondered as to why they felt so pre-empt
Then I realised why, I wake up alone.
Whispered Dreams - Josephine Wall
Many tears have been shed so many times
Very often perhaps playing silly games
And so with time we build ourselves a wall
To stand behind and hide our stupid shame
In doing so we miss our soulmate ofttimes.
But realise if we take a chance sometimes
And dare one time to look over another wall
Sometimes seeing into the most joyous climes
And also other things that may just appall
Spending time walking a path that upward climbs.
It's very true Fortune favours love most times
Tis well known love can overcome any pitfall
Please do not judge on what should ever befall
And do not misjudge on all the past bedtimes.
I saw you and I knew we were past lovers
Certain we had loved thousands of pastimes.
Somewhere in time we'd met and fell in love
I had loved you a thousand life times.
That for sure, in other climes and covers.
I knew that the first time I held you close
I had held you a thousand times before
So familiar the feeling of you in my arms.
I knew I would hold you a thousand more
Each time as wonderful and so on it goes.
Certainly the first time I kissed you I knew
I had kissed you a thousand times before
And would kiss you a thousand times more
Together we were destined to share Eternity.

How often do we punish the one we love?
Sometimes words have more poison than snakes
Then with the morning realising as one wakes
Such stupidity of deeds and conscience quakes
Pouring out such venom we cannot remove.
And our loved one says, "I forgive everything"
You hear, but in her voice you sense the pain
How quickly she turns away, and hides again
Just gently turn her to you and see the strain
And from her tone, you hear alarm bells ring.
Wishing that we could take back every word
Trying to heal the scars caused by the absurd
Behind her smile, but know there's no harm
That cannot be fixed by this woman's charm.
The cold night wind has settled down now.
Outside winters darkness sends out white breath
Inside no warmer, the war of bitter words raise
And a seeming friendship welcomes sickled death
Who's to care, only two former friends will know?
From one all that's heard is angry words now more
For irony's innocence will not pay the cost owed
Good intentions merely adding points to the tally
No one can win, and friendship stands back cowed
And saying more just adds fuel to make the fire roar.
A door slams, hear a shout "You'll see me no more"
Followed by a glass shattering against the wall.
The brother stormed along, he had said it all
A few thousand paces, he cooled, turned and swore.
Just a Thought
Is the barrel half empty, or is it half full?
When we see it half empty, we are anxious
We must do some work and fill it again
When we see it half full, it is auspicious
Then we know that we are truly blessed.
But in reality it is neither full or empty
In fact, does it really matter, be grateful.
You possess a barrel, many others don't
That it's half full smile, do not be bashful
But don't boast you will impress nobody.
If your barrel has wine then fill your glass
Enjoy life while you can happiness is free.
Look at children playing, hearts full of glee
Look... a happy couple, a laddie and his lass.
Yet still the sea carries on ignoring our fate
I saw the sun consumed by the gentle waves.
Slowly it sank, deeper, deeper into there
Disappearing, swallowed into a watery grave
Darkness, til morn, hoping to change our fate.
La Mer has no rules, except to fill deeper places
It rules with a calming darkness as forever
It has caused environmental evolution
Causing revolution and change whenever
What was there flourishing now leaves only traces.
Up through the ages, I saw ancients gather there
Casting out to sea, they knew water could be grey
Half-tones and most times no secret, but a warning
The sea has power beyond the sun, beyond time.
When you speak I hear music from your lips
And your smile is the greatest concerto
That kiss creates the drum beating in my heart
A march that I will follow where ere you go
Up close there's an orchestra at your fingertips.
Your bow plays softly over my heartstrings
A cello concerto conceived by amore
A more ethereal composer by far
Although we will show them what music is for
And what greater inspiration it brings.
Even when we are sat quietly together
Soft music flows between the two of us
The adagio di molto by Jean Sibelius.
This feeling, this music will last forever.

Neither Wealth Nor Power
Neither wealth nor power has ever wooed me
Instead I prefer to live a more sedate way
Love will never be a poor and paltry thing
And it makes living more enjoyable every day
For wealth and power have no value you see.
Love's lantern rising makes all lovers sing
As Dianna's light awakens amore once again
From dusk to dawn the air is alive with magic
Hear soft words spoken twixt maid and swain
And with the dawn hear what love doth bring.
Apollo the sun god takes o'er the day and logic
And cast aside, the normal day begins again.
The love that night created will often remain
And ignoring wealth and power was not tragic.
How lonely is the night, without a companion
She shares her life with the day, now asleep
Yet whilst she sleeps, he opens half a world
And during her vigil has been unable to peep,
Covered with a blanket, and a different opinion.
With the first sign of day you hear welcome calls
And all forms of life burst forth with joyous sound
That night has done her best to see unfurled.
So some politics would claim the same around
That only day should grace their hallowed walls.
I wonder how long they would last without a night
And the pleasure that a short hibernation creates;
Lying in bed asleep sharing your time as mates
A comfortable partner, sharing beliefs and rights?
Touch me once again with your soft fingertips
Nay do not now retreat from thy search of me
From which eyes shining you so lovingly sup.
Instead I must close my eyes, lost in ecstasy
Neither do you stop the travel of thy lips .
Unresisting I feel thee in thy earthly search
My wanton breath unwillingly betrays me
Wishing to spend myself into thy heavenly cup
Thou art now part of me, so I am part of thee
In total surrender, no honour to besmirch.
With your touch you arouse my bodies fire
My wicked temptress, now you own my soul
Thy taste of me is complete now we are whole
My body arcs as a release to heaven I aspire.
Xenobiotic, a Protest
I have found myself, not that I was lost
More that I was tangled in the web of life
The spider of that life made me pay in full
And just in time I was able to use a knife
Now its become winter, I must stand the frost.
I've cut myself free and got back on my path.
For I was an alien living in a foreign land
An icy world where there was eternal frost
Emotionless where everything was planned
That disdainful breath of Fate and her wrath.
I can't isolate myself, that would be a crime
I must speak out loud, or pay some of the cost
I have found myself, not that I was lost
And such is the purpose of this rhyme.
You Have Built a Bridge
Each day the bridge gets longer and longer
There was a time when I only needed to reach out
You would be there smiling in that way, at me
Now the flood has gone and we are in drought
That was when our love was much stronger
I have spent my lifetime looking just for you
Each day after we met offered only promise
Whenever I looked only happiness could I see
Then suddenly everything towards this mess
And no matter what I said you had another view.
You have built a bridge between us, tell me why?
I see plants growing now and blocking my view.
Did I not show my love? Did I not please you,
Then what was it that caused your love to die?
Zinfandel and More
Tonight let's gather, have a drinking race
Competition in jars shall be what's scored
Memory still stays and it cannot be erased
Fill the tankard with wine that's soured
Without your love no clock ever has a face.
Pour down the wine let us drink to forget
Un-lived dreams litter the path I now walk
Life's bitter brew my cup's o'erflowed
Once loving conversations are now just talk
Plans made in good faith now only cause a sweat.
With pleasured gifts now nought but a blight
All thoughts of love's pleasure now cast aside
For we ignored what was known outside
Let Horus and Bacchus join with us tonight
EIGHT DEADLY SINS
And what shall be my sin tonight
I have no care or responsibility,
I show my face, the one wanted to see
My only concern is my dignity,
And I do not care about morals, or right
Some would call it face, I prefer pride
But I have others who now do my work
Slaves by rewards, and perks and such
And they are sacked for one iota of shirk
Yet that ease of pace takes me for a ride.
What cruelty is there in the human soul,
Because once enjoyed, its now want more
Gathering so much the soul becomes sore
Stead of saying, that's enough, that's all!!
1 Ira - Wrath
I become angry only in defence of you,
I cannot stand by and see you get harmed.
To see you hurt would hurt me far more
The slightest threat to you I am alarmed,
I am your knight, what else should I do?
Yet I think perhaps I'm guilty of this sin
I know there's naught 'cept in defence of you
And is justified, to hurt you is declaring war.
There is only impatience travelling to you
How many times have I wanted it begin.
Too many nights without you is a loss
The lust and greed within causes me pain.
But I gladly do it to be with you again
Even though the're many oceans I'll cross.
2 Avaritia - Greed
How can I have an excess of you,
We give and take a balance's made
That is true love more or less
That's the rewards of our fair trade
We love and see our love accrue.
It is a wealth, but of love alone
The only bank is each others soul
When we give, the more we possess
Still we appear completely whole
Now we've joined there's only one.
Neither has lost, and both have gained
If it is so, how can it be bad?
Neither we're only left feeling glad.
Were we tortured, were we chained?
3 Socordia - Sloth
I have not failed, I have gained you
My main task and my mission is set
To care, love and look after you for life
No slackness in behaviour will you get
A task that very few could ever do.
Know that this love created no sluggard
Even though I've become your slave.
I will protect you always regardless of strife
And prove in many ways I'm no Knave
I shall write thee sonnets and be thy bard.
In proving that I am far from indifferent
To be thine I will do anything you ask
Hoping that in your favour I will bask
As my aim is to make you always content.
4 Superbia - Pride
To love properly, you must love yourself
Assuming that false modesty's ruled out
What must be practised is amoristic thrift
Being comfortable with your new route,
But I'm not vain, I put you before myself.
A vain man loves himself and himself alone
He preens and primps thinking he's the best
And always puts himself way above the rest
But he is selfish, right down to the bone.
I love me 'cause I love you, there's no doubt
You love me, there's a reason to be proud.
How can it be a sin to appreciate a gift
Making it just the time to shout out loud
For too long now I've lived in drought.
5 Luxuria - Lust
You awaken my senses once again
Is once not enough, do you not tire?
I cannot deny how much I am ablaze
For inside I burn, you've set me afire,
Too much of you will drive me insane.
This desire for you sets all else aside
And forever be burned into my soul,
I'm only human and you've turned me on
I need more of you to make me whole,
A forbidden roller coaster I need to ride.
The scent of you sets my senses ablaze
I want you, regardless of whatever the cost
There is no conscience of whatever is lost
My conscience is cast aside in my craze.
6 Gula - Gluttony
The waistline of my love grows more
I let passions belt out another notch
You encourage me to indulge once again
Then you standby and gleefully watch
Why doesn't Cupid's arrow make it sore
I impatiently seek the fruits of our love
Eagerly devouring but never enough,
I am addicted to you I cannot abstain
As you give your all, I stuff and stuff
You give me more, still I want more of.
I do not eat out of sensual gratification,
That arrow has given me a wound,
And can only heal when you're around
A wound compelling me all others to shun.
7 Invidia - Envy
I envy no man, if I have a sin it's pride
Pride in being a man. doing what I have
Throwing away medals for doing my job
Bit's of cloth and metal I've no need to save
My life proves I'm here for more than the ride.
I do not envy the rich, I have all I need
Nor does greed turn me to wanting more.
I hate anything dealing with being a snob
And I certainly don't think of life as a chore
I think I've passed that on through my seed.
I will not deprive any man of his rights
But I do resent a person asserting theirs.
Whilst claiming to be righteous heirs
Too many sins happen, and cause fights.
8 Tristitia - Despair
Presumption should never make us neglect that which appears easy to us,
nor despair make us lose courage at the sight of difficulties.
What greater cruelty can there be than despair
No matter what you do things still go wrong
And out of step with whatever is the dance
And everyone's singing a very different song
With feelings in ones mind saying "No one cares".
This ultimate sin it is just a mental curse
A curse that leads to many deaths by suicide
Innocents that need help not public ignorance
We have let that person down, whoa betide
I can't think of anything that could be worse!
If the person is sad, just give them hope
They need help and friendship they know is good
When they are dead it's too late to say "I should've"
They need far more than any medicine, or dope.
