#10 Cyhydedd Fer Sonnet

Who actually created this form is unclear as the cyhydedd fer couplet lends itself easily to the sonnet format. As the cyhydedd fer itself is an ancient form it is quite likely a series of 7 couplets was being used long before the advent of the sonnet.

However, the cyhydedd fer creates a different sonnet rhythm in the fact there is no meter requirement other than the rhyme every 8 syllables. The couplets allow the poet some flexibility in where to divide the poem with the pivot or volta which can be anywhere between lines 5 and 8 with the final couplet being a resolution.

The rhyme sceme is: a.a. b.b. c.c. d.d. e.e. f.f. g.g.

Here is a lovely example of the form by the Welsh Poet, Sarah Rayburn:

Taffy's Love Sonnet

In my dreams I reach out to you
and do the things that lovers do,
sating the longings of the night
before the dawn of morning light.
My heart reveals its romances
in those rosy tinted glances,
where eyes only see perfection
and I've no fear of rejection.
Yet as day breaks I am alone
with the sun life is monotone,
and I'm left with naught but your words,
as my dreams take flight with the birds.
I know your love is out of reach,
a distant shore on echo beach.

Sarah Rayburn

Cooling Breath

A cooling breath is stealing the leaves
Chilly, short days and long autumn eves
As all the greens fade to reds and yellow
This golden scene makes me quite mellow
T-shirts are replaced by long shirtsleeves
And nature now no longer conceives
And fields lay silent, sleeping, fallow,
Burnt out forests look dark and sallow
But I know in time warmth will come
Spring we'll see and a warmer sun
For a short while it will be a different scene
When fields and trees will again be green
Till hot dry days will make them like death
Again we'll be praying for a cooling breath.

Falling Snow

Passing through life like wagon trains
Leaving tracks on fresh virgin plains.
For a while we disturbed the grass
Our existence felt as we pass.
Or footprints in the fresh beach sand
Our seeds rarely grow as planned.
The tides soon wash away our trail
We can't beat nature on any scale.
Once lush fields again become dirt,
The depth of winter another desert.
Seasons come and go, as do we,
Nature decrees and we must agree.
Mans life is naught but falling snow,
It has its time here, then it goes.

Have You Ever

Have you ever walked an empty street
Without any way you could retreat
After the night has conquered the day?
Each measured step, took you a special way,
Questioning the will that led you astray,
Is there an author of a greater play,
Further away from where you felt complete,
In which you were the victim of deceit?
What's the purpose of any emotion,
Just cast out on fates whimsical ocean,
When all that is promised will be denied
Where presenters of truth blatantly lied
Thus cynics were given their promotion
What was true simply have no notion.

Just Your Look

Welcome the Sun, smile, say Hello,
And don't be afraid to watch it go
Just be thankful knowing somewhere
There is someone for whom you care.
Eyes light up with the sight of you.
Hopes of a day making dreams true;
Sounds of silence when naught needs said
Looking forwards to times ahead
The look, on her face when you groan.
Her falling tears mix with your own.
Her lips curve, are smiles from her heart.
Her touch, tells you, you'll never part.
Her hand, as it reaches to hold your face.
The clock as it stops time, and space.

Knowledge (Poetry Remains)

The sun has set behind the hills
With it the glow and evenings chills.
The clouds hide the moon and Heaven.
Darkness pervades as though seven
Horsemen waving swords would appear,
And everything we love and hold dear
Would then vanish in that darkness.
It would be an end to progress.
Suddenly there is a flicker
Like street lamp by a lamplighter.
The power is back, the storm has gone
And now we know we'll see the dawn.
I've sat here writing despite the rains
Proving that poetry always remains.

Lovers Anonymous

What of love now? I have filled my cup
Drank its brew and want more to sup.
Created from the choicest of fruit
Has made the best of wine, I salute.
I wake in the morn fresh and clear
Yet like any sot I need more cheer.
I stand before my peers and boast
"I am a drunk, let's have another toast."
I have savoured such a wine
That Gods and Angels say is fine.
I will not reform, nor wish too
Over a legal limit I just blew
Envy me and pray for yourselves
And find a partner you may love.

Need
Love's gift cannot be given, it waits to be accepted.
- Rabindranath Tagore

I want you my princess of the night
Your beauty in the full moons light.
Dark blue skies, form a stars back drop
Fast beating heart, breath wants to stop
Moonlight enhances the sheen of your skin
Warm soft wet lips, draws my soul in.
At first, savouring the moment
The waltz begins, such sweet torment
Our dance of love from each other's eyes
The words, the kisses, the heavenly sighs
And now our dance becomes a tango
Feeling like this where else to go
The feeling sends shocks down my spine
Then final moments, your gift divine.

Roses In Winter

It is winter and it has just finished raining
My gardens aren't doing any complaining
The warm autumn has transferred to now
And instead of dying my flowers still grow
I walked out the front and my senses shook
There was beauty everywhere that I looked
Yellow roses, large, proud and beautiful
Competed with red, larger, more scentable.
I walk to my car past lavender still in flower
And past the plum tree a purple tower.
The postman complains about plants in his way
Instead of stopping, and appreciating the day.
I must cut the branches of roses over the path
To ease his way, and lessen his wrath.

Simplicity

Creatures know their place, seek a mate.
Thinking he is the master of his fate
Know man is nothing but a beast
And just like them must breath and feast
Wrapped up in the scheme of things
Following what 'er his planning brings.
The Brehon laws of the Ancient Celt
Know how the original creation felt
Knew what Nature was really worth.
The simple ways that feels the Earth
Beasts and plants in absolute harmony
Man has to learn what has to be.
Some must return to simpler ways
Forget thinking of what it pays.

Vernal Pledge

I hear birds making nests through inner walls,
Because the weather's cold with frequent squalls,
And some have made them within my eaves.
They've taken refuge till the storm reprieves.
They sing to me, whilst working or at play,
It cannot help but brighten up my day.
A song that birds sing, safe within their lair.
The music in my ears is extraordinaire.
When all of earth awakens from its sleep,
A kind of promise for their home to keep,
And spring awaits the hatching of each brood,
My solemn vow in vernal splenditude.
With winter's ending, and spring almost here,
The birds are still around; I lend an ear.

Webonaughts

What of places that are dim and dark
Are they less of Nature than the park?
Occasionally seen by light of day,
Have they a right to have their say?
Man always removes beasts of fear
Persistent returning year by year
Coming back when he turns away
In spite of man they have their say.
What of creatures in this domain
The little beasts, part of the chain.
Creatures that feed on mans refuse
Nature has an important use.
There'll be a time when Nature wins
Like a spider and the web she spins.

X Bottle Brand

What is my pet tipple you ask?
No problem that's a simple task
Madam remember what I said,
About a glass of Aussie red,
But if I wish to be sociable eh.
I have a tasty white, a local brew
And what's wrong with a Chardonnay,
It's much better shared two way!
Then after sharing a dinners sport
What's better than a large glass of port?
Mind you I'd rather have a few more
But it's crass to count or to score.
What I do know is I love wine
It's Gods way of saying, "Life is fine".

You

When you're lost from me for a while
I look inside my heart and see you smile
Having realised that you are there
I know you are with me everywhere.
When you're lost from me 'cause of space
We are each in a separate place
I close my eyes and look deep within
Then I see your eyes, smile and grin.
Know my heart is open, though stressed
I am still aware that with you I'm blessed
When you're lost from me for a time
Together we'll make that Eternal climb.
You will never ever be lost from me
For wherever's my heart you will be.

Zero Tolerance

Some days the moon doesn't rise where I live,
Dark offers more than bright days can give.
Earlier the sun refused to light my skies.
In life's more tender and disguise
Darkness has always known my name
What is love to some but a game?
As I walk a black cloud covers my soul
Because in darkness I have control
Again the sun has forgotten my needs
As if ashamed of their intolerant deeds.
At night the stars run off somewhere
Hiding instead of asking me to share
Perhaps playing with another's thoughts
Childishly running off before they are caught.
