2018 Poetry Form Challenge

#21 Cavatina

This form as its name suggests was formerly Italian and also emerged around the time of Francesco Petrarca, and like the French ran their poetry and music along similar repetitions of melody. Unlike all the other Italian poetry forms, this form never became popular in England.

The Italian form consists of a ten (10) syllable non rhyming line alternating with a four (4) syllable rhyming line, at least three (3) times and completed with a ten syllable line couplet. This will probably explain why the English never took it seriously because of it breaking up Iambic Pentameter with Iambic Dimeter and appearing to limp rather than flow. Peggy Nelson in her tribute to her mothers day shows the basic requirements:

She held me tight in her warm loving arms
Protecting me
She helped me walk and watched me fall through life
She nurtured me
She gave me life and held my hand when small
Love she gave me
She was always there when I had got hurt
Kissing my sores and cleaning up the dirt.

Peggy Nelson

You'll notice that Peggy used repetition rather than ryhme for emphasis making it a very powerful octave.
It should be emphasised at this point that regardless of the number of lines this form will always remain a Cavatina.
If for example it were to have 10 lines it would not become a Cavatina Decastich or Cavatina Sonnetina. Similarly if it had 14 lines it would not become a Cavatina Sonnet (Similarly Rondel Prime). It is however possible to change the rhyme scheme and have variants of, a. b. for a 14 line Cavatina, Ryter Roethicle gives an example below:
Idee Fixe (Obsession)

Find me lurking, a shadow in your dreams
Thoughts in your mind.
Feel light kisses from me from the darkness
Touch's of delight.
Sense me caressing you, I'm the lover
You cannot find
As your eyes half close in pleasure think of
Me in the night.
And with the light of dawn I will be gone
I won't be found
Seek where you may, I don't exist by day
A ghostly sprite.
Hidden in the shades of night I reside
Then no matter where, I'll be by your side.

Ryter Roethicle

If there is any requirement to exceed 14 lines then two stanzas or more would be preferable. A great example of this is Peggy's poem that was referenced earlier, in her challenge reply, you will be able to see this poem in its entirety. Another lovely example is Leny Roovers shown below:

Connected

You are the king ruling my inner heart,
I am your queen;
your name is on the pages of my mind,
on hallowed screen;
your voice within my ear guides me on stage
of all life's scenes.
With you I share the secrets of my soul,
under your loving gaze I play my role.

I am your ear when you unload your heart,
for you I care;
I am your anchor in the sea of life,
I will be there;
My touch will reach you countless leagues away,
I hear your prayer.
I'll search for you whenever you seem lost,
I'll be your lighthouse when your ship gets tossed.

Leny Roovers

Contentment

I look across the river from my chair
As the sun sets.
You raise your wine glass to your lips and smile
We are content.
With it the setting sun takes the days heat
Without regrets.
Casually our feet reach out and contact
With full intent.
The sun sets but the red sky refuses to die
It's paid it's debts,
But naught is due except to see the fruits
Of this event.
The sun has seen so much love in it's time
But none so much as will be yours and mine.

Easily Given

They do not love who will promise all and more
Yet ungi'n their heart.
They give all of their physical self very easily
Their soul's not a part.
No one can love at all, if they do not give
Love cannot start.
Love means that you give more than everything
That's rewarded completely hearing your heart sing.

Look out across the bay my beloved,
And see the sun;
See how long he takes to kiss the Earth goodnight
Ours long begun.
See e'n when he's gone how the Earth still glows
She feels well done,
But when we love each night, it will last all day
All we do each time is to fill loves jugs this way.

-----

Garden of Love

In life we'll set a paradigm of love
We'll never part.
So certain am I, I surrender my soul
Also my heart.
Others will know it can be any time
When love can start.
But we have found it and ahead of them
All the more sooner we'll have Heaven

We will create a garden with a bower
And there we'll meet
'Neath blossoms we have created so divine
Our loving feat.
The Sun will shine and all the birds will sound
We'll be complete.
And each night as Hypnos lays out his coat
Wrapped together in heaven we'll float.

-----

Happy Ever After

I ne'r was struck by love, till the hour we met
It made me alive;
Before was a boring and listless experience
Able to survive;
From my boring bed of clay I finally arose
Feeling revived.
I see you smile, looking so happy as I speak
Words of love, and your reply makes me weak.

-----

Imagination

I picture you in a white, dress, bag, shoes
Looking so pure.
And my mind wanders now to you in black
So sinecure.
But that is my mind and where has it been
You, so demure
Then I realise each pose is just for me
And you will be what I want you to be.

-----

Notes

I left your side to do my wandering
Lonely again.
This time there's hope a prayer to return
And stop the pain.
I see your face, it calls to me from afar
I am insane.
I turn and head for what is your abode
I can see now and the blessings bestowed.

-----

On Cue

No one of note knows what I feel or cares
You care for me.
Curious, inviting, waiting my every move
Would you agree?
I saw you smile as I approached and knew
What we would be
I took you in my arms with a welcome hug
Realising I'd been truly bitten by loves bug.

There's a look in your eyes, swiftly passing
I saw that glance
Then I saw that look again wondering
I will advance.
As if on cue the world spun, twirled and
Began to dance.
And dance we will until the end of time
Knowing what we have is always sublime.

-----

Perth Storm

The water falls in hard noisy splashes
There is no anger
Like welcoming eager friends, the water
Awaits below.
In a flurry of movement, splashing sounds
Greeting burst forth
Friends and visitors hug, dash off hastily
Again united
Then others eager to take their place wait
With bated breath and the cycle continues.

-----

Unacceptable

You wickedly tease me with opal smiles
Cast out, tempting.
My nose senses late autumn in the air
Cold and wet's king.
Where is the rain? False promises again
There is nothing.
The opal fades as dirty brown patches
Appear and hopes of heavy rains dashes.

Further North abundance floods aplenty
Too much again.
The levees breech and some towns are flooded
Almost insane.
Does it flow where it's needed most, mostly
Goes down the drain.
Much further North the Artic thaws away
And we must wait while the Poli's delay.

-----

Vignette

The life of true love can be short, grasp it
Dearly cherish,
And carry it daily well fed in your heart,
Lest it perish.
Tit bits of lust and morsels of passion
Will embellish
There portions of love carefully balanced
And this is the only way it is enhanced.

-----

Xylose (Sugar)

The full moonlit night causes thrills in the heart
Voices haunt me.
In a forest of darkness seeking for
A free spirit,
From light to dark no longer searching.
I’d found thee,
I sought harmony with you a union.
Should you permit
I was willing to give my all to you.
You did agree
And from that feelings grew and grew so strong
I will admit
Days without you are days without sunshine
And the days with you are all roses and wine.

-----

Zilch Muse

It's not the night or the music it's me
My muse has gone
Too much work, too much pressure is enough
She has withdrawn
I sit here my glass of port as company
Ideas, I have none
No worldly wisdom to impart to you
This time my foot is in some others shoe.

My notes zilch, there's no inspiration there
All ideas blown
So I sit here drinking a lovely port
No light has shone
Another sip, appreciating Gods gift to me
I must postpone
A soaking passport that's now a useless thing
Has caused the problem of why I cannot sing.
