2020 Poetry Form Challenge#24 Rime RoyalThis sonnet form is believed to be of Italian origin, and by removing the fifth line appears to be a modified Ottava Rima by reducing it to a seven line stanza of three rhymes, arranged with a rhyme scheme of; a. b. a. b. b. c. c.; the unison of the two stanza's will construct a lovely sonnet form. It seems probable that the inventor of this stanza was Geoffrey Chaucer, who had many compositions using this form, of which the following is an example:

Kathy Andersonarms of love have reached and found embracing through the ages all hearts who've loved the sound of mother voice like healing sages writ upon memories lasting pages, she that has always been there thereupon the moon and suns glare are dimmed under willow branches green seen by Fae or in chipmunks stare, eyes glint a knowing not lost in sheen of dewy morning ferns gossamer fair a fair dawn in misted bowers care, the mother, maiden, and crone remains through eons unchanged save for her names. back to list |
Terry ClitheroeComforted only by this semi darkness As hypnotic flickering candles shine How could my life be such a mess Now I sit here alone drinking my wine Silently remembering an earlier time. Reminiscing about those midnight kisses That mountain of love now a deep abyss. Is fantasy just another world of lies Can we truly love in this crazy world? What is laughter but the start of sighs Sighs and tears as truth is unfurled. Or is it lies dreary dancing past us whirled? I tried to talk to you and make amends But you won't talk, so how can we be friends? ![]() ----- Bush Storm Scarlet waves of clouds madly drifting by me Forming a long sonorous threatening chain Gravity rolling them on noisily to infinity. A dingo howls on the nearby grassy plain Before retiring to the shadows once again. Then flashes of light crash down from the skies I see it reflected in that scared creature's eyes. Not stalking me, instead it's genuinely afraid As fear's overcomes its desire for a prize. I realise for comfort towards me it's made. Lightning flashes again in its dazzled eyes Its time man and beast came to a compromise As nuzzle meets palm and friendship is made Permanent under that heavenly cascade. ![]() ----- Cacophony of Time Hear you this rhyme and its journey The glorious colour confusion found. Hear you about time and its cacophony You cast a rich dark colourful sound Through pain, and joy, darkness commands. Aged eyes see colours now with lesser tint Looking back wondering where time went. Parsleys rage, Rosemary's lost time Listening to sirens and burglar alarms Regretting indiscretions and anti-social crime Like speeding offences escaping by smarms And flattering police and using your charms Now sixty years old and no longer a beauty You have to compromise with gentle acuity. ![]() ----- Days Will Come The days will come the days will go The hands of time move on and on The years will pass not fast nor slow Counting weeks as they pass anon Eternity's silver torch has shone And in due time our love will grow The days will come the days will go At the end of time when all is gone The suns have died, there's only snow Our souls will smile having lived on Our love outlasted the world below We'll sit on our star our Love will glow Who knows with time what it's begun At the end of time when all is gone? ![]() ----- Dining Alone Late flight, late night, the day is over With a glass of wine I contemplate the day A different scene my eyes now cover As quickly I pack my clothes away And go to feed at the hotel buffet Soon good food and wine do their work Sitting there my mood begins to perk. One thing is lacking, that's good company It was thought here I could stay two days But in this strange town no-one knows me Though so far I have nothing but praise And the Indian restaurants my spirits raise. I had a huge laugh as I drank my wine Looking at the bottle, saw it was Australian. ![]() ----- Easy Dreaming Sleep reigns with dreams of us whilst I sleep I know I'm dreaming, because you are here As each night our loving meetings we keep A world away, I close my eyes, you appear In day too far to pull you close I fear I spend each day wishing it were through For now these dreams will have to do. We shouldn't wish away our lives for dreams Fate has a way too often of spoiling things. When I think of you my imagination streams With desires to see what the future brings So much to see with a love so promising. Would that our life together were more sure But even so, in spite of all it will endure. ![]() ----- Feeling of Love The feeling never leaves when you love someone It's with you for eternity when your soul is shared The parting of a lifetime when your love is gone. Her spirit looking at you, knowing that you cared That you'll never meet again is nothing to be feared Sob gently over her, your tears constantly flowing Helping you meet your fears, you feel her guiding Her spirits touch, a spirits kiss, a spirits gentle tears With each passing day as love will only grow Keeps her by your side through the passing years Knowing deeply in her heart that you love her so. With each passing day love will only grow If being together is part of the greater beings plan Then you'll be united, your woman, with her man. ![]() ----- Humpty Dumpty I was not meant to sit on a wall But it was you who put me there I did not wish to have this fall I believed when you said you care My shell is broke beyond repair. There is no help in which to turn Another lesson I have to learn. Any knowledge that I can gather Curious about life and love and all Is so uncertain, like the weather. I was not meant to sit on that wall I did not wish to have any fall. But fall I did and down I crashed And all hopes of love ever dashed. ![]() ----- Jet Lag How strange it is to feel this way My body half torn twixt the new world And the old world stuck forever in clay. My mind halfway, feeling unfurled How can I rest when I feel so whorled Its time clock, once ever so pliable Once upon a time but now not reliable. No sooner in learning to compromise It is one again forced to change back I have to learn all over I now realise. Experience had given me the knack On how to combat this bloody attack. But could it be that I'm in a new league And that I am suffering battle fatigue? ![]() ----- Kaleidoscope In another place, in some other time Beyond our reach is a land of fantasy A perfect place with a perfect clime. Where all our hopes and wishes to be Live their only in our dreams to see And all we scheme and wish and dare Every night is just waiting there. A kaleidoscope of life's rich fare. For us to see again refreshed and new There we exist without a care Our bodies perfect, strong and true A land of love where all's true blue So each night as on your beds you lie Why not relax and let your cares go by? ![]() ----- Kinesis Peel back the layers of me one by one, then Reveal all my secrets, unleash my essence Until I'm stripped bare, before you again. I do not wish to hide from your presence You know I worship your ambiance. You constantly open my eyes to my dreams And never consider them to be extremes. Instead you are the inspiration to my plans The foundation of my wishes and desires The one who seems so amenable in my hands. The one who satiates all that my heart requires And in doing so lights so many other fires, Yet your presence brings me so much peace I realise why my love could never cease. ![]() ----- Language of Souls My love, I want to grow old with you, For a long life can never be my destiny But we both know this can't be true. And when you die I pray it will it be me Waiting there, to guide you to eternity Our two souls will kiss and again unite As spirits, in love again we will ignite My love, my body, my soul are yours The flame of love once more together My very soul I now offer up and more. I only know I love you and will forever Forever bound, forever, loving ever Please do not deny this simple plea And spend eternity forever with me. ![]() ----- Magic No more is it the time of magic, it is now of men Merlin and all his kin have left the stage and sleep Slumbering in their caves awaiting until when Once more they must emerge from sleep so deep To defend what's good is a promise they will keep. Fighting evil power will be their main concern Working spells, until once again magic will govern And once again in battle we will see the way The strength of arm with sword, or axe and shield, Again the mighty kings must field and fight the fey With blow for blow, or spell for spell, or yield. The enemy is evil and who knows what he'll field The good must be strong fighting for what is right In the end the weaker magic will lose that fight. ![]() ----- Nature All know their place and their fate Should one species become too strong living out of harmony within their state Nature levels it out before too long. Man does things knowing they're wrong Natures balance is without deceit Then along comes man in all his conceit. Not just like every other creature born Ignoring that he's only an alternate form. Ask the ancients what the tribe believes Because all we hear are corporate lies Science and technology only deceives. Oil and coal companies argue, compromise Because of man, every day a species dies. ![]() ----- Out of a void Out of a void my love has grown A cosmic speck, a minute grain Out of nothing a seed was sown Finitely created this heavenly domain. No roof of tile but it will still remain Not of wood, nor steel, nor brick or stone But a pulsing heart, inside flesh and bone. From timeless space you've won my heart A celestial being that has won my soul That time or distance could never part Two separate beings who've made a whole Singing forever loves barcarole. My life and love I dedicate to thee Wishing to be with you for all eternity. ![]() ----- Passing Strangers We seem like passing strangers now Just like ships that pass in mid seas On their journey to some other morrow Their cargo of hopes driven by breeze And from your look I would now freeze. Those eyes that used to light me up Broke me when you and I brokeup. In the garden that was our destinies We have seen both spring and fall We took our love to extremities Now you have built a brick wall What's the reason you don't care at all. I know things could be good between us What did I do to create such a fuss? ![]() ----- Question of the Morn And how must we greet the morn I saw the sun lay out her golden beams. Will my dreams now fit the dawn? Are you part of my fates schemes? I came to you because of dreams Or just that our lives have crossed? Two boats met on life's ocean tossed Join together and share our load Knowing this life is a day in time You now walk with me on my road Towards Nirvana together we climb Do we really have a love so sublime Is it really worthwhile this time to try Or do we part at dark, and wave goodbye. ![]() ----- Rain Descending Rain descending from sombre cloud From the grey morning as we arise Hearing rain drip from silent to loud Carried to us the new dawn cries, Not in horror but a pleasant surprise. Clouds moving slowly from the West Nature is happy finding how blessed. The birds sitting quietly in their nests For once listening to nature's sound A gentle breeze adds to it with its caress Opening them up bringing them around Morning light shows new green abounds Also with the morn light new life is born Spring is here and all of winter is torn. ![]() Two Seasons A Time Of Life..........Summers This period in life is all of natures own The journey starts with the arrival of sound A time of life for all and all that is grown Where creatures of all types are heard to abound And flora awakes and spring from the ground Fresh fruit is lush beginning to fill and ripen The swelling leaves colour and widely open. All around life is thriving, growing with zest Scents seduce senses as savoury breezes blow When every plant and every beast is at its best. Natures way, that they all must surely follow To ensure that every year their kind will grow A time of life for all and all that is grown They can wear a while this summer's crown. A Time Of Rest.........Winters The journey is over its time for it all to end All plants are stripped not at all like their best Just now there is no more energy to expend And so this period become the time of rest With silence coming from most avian's nest. Beneath the earth all are asleep and still Bulbs lay dormant and seeds await natures will. The earth's energy also needs time to refill The kernels of trees lie protected in the ground The fields lie fallow, gladly paying their bill All lies there dormant, with nary a sound Waiting the time they can at last be unbound. For three months nought will disturb Natures rest Proving once again the ancient farmer knew best. ----- Why did you Why did you pick this time and place Where did we meet so many lives ago. So many times past, I have kissed your face But yet each time I have let you go. Each time we live of our love we know In this time we have to live so far apart Yet we know we share each others heart. It was not my wish, it was not my deed. That life should treat us in this way It was simply time, it was natures need That leaves us in pain and in dismay. Cognisant that together we cannot stay Yet I know each life our love's sublime And knowing that soulmates conquer time. ![]() ----- Xpose Tourists and hopefuls toss pennies into pools Always hoping and wishing for too much. People make money from exploiting these fools Dreams always excelling in the pecuniary clutch Never realised love affairs, an imperfect touch Wishes, desires, often just a thoughtful dash Often pocketed money really not serious cash. My dreams have been dashed too many times, So why should I waste a silly coin on idle dreams? Then I realise that was the past and it's only dimes Hardly the place for my really serious schemes Desire and the fact are really two different streams One always wishes too much, if granted will rue Realising that only heartfelt wishes come true. ![]() ----- Zen Conversation The dark abyss of a soul is not empty Just undiscovered waiting through eons For the hidden secrets waiting aplenty Secrets that play with our emotions Causing problems created by assumptions And yet our mind is responsible for both Used correctly and we plant our troth. The truths are found by a searching mind Listening with ears that hear in the silence Looking with eyes that see even when blind Using senses that know everything is balance As though we stood at the edge of the oceans Questioning whether to wade into the water But also afraid that there may be sharks. ![]() back to list |
Divena CollinsHadst thy not birthed this child out of love For love thou hath felt since his birth began A love that flourished from the spirits above Cast seeds t`wards the passions of woman What else shalt be derived from such a plan When their passionate feelings were involved And new life betwixt love shalt be revolved Had not the tale of Adam and Eve been so Of how human instincts changed their view And how in this world the populations grow For what they thought was something new Invented by love it was all they once knew But a poisonous apple they ate from a tree Became their grave warning for you and me. ![]() ----- Hounds Of Hell Call off thy hounds that gnarl my bones Thou starving fiends of viscious breed Thy beasts of the devils hybrid clones That when in hell did fester with greed To tear out my flesh for a bloody feed Howling canines that reaks of death Render their prey with ne`er a breath. Without recognition to perish unknown Nobody heard my last prayers of need Cast off carcass that was left all alone No one had heeded my final death moan Laid betwixt earth, fire, and brimstone Gone from slethering jaws of misdeed Unto earthly mounds of devils weed. ![]() ----- Love of Chaucer I durst not dout sweet wordes of desire Thy wondrous charms bestow`n thou so Not fondness of love that shalt e`er retyre That maketh true love more evenlie flow Tho` tymeless years doth cometh and goe Wordes soe spoken shalt ne`er be gone Hence softlie thy whispers bestow`n upon When Cupids bows long arrow shalt fire That pierce thy heart where love doth grow For true love then nurtur`d shalt never tyre The pleasures deep within forever bestow Divinity of tenderness with heavenly glow Soft were the touches bestow`n thereon Precious the moment that love was borne. ![]() ----- Nightmare Fantasy The creaking floorboards around midnight Coupled with the howling winds outside No wonder she was terrorized with fright The phantom within her mind shall not hide A victimised terror of frankensteins bride How imagination can haunt a fearful mind Stricken by nightmares of a horrific kind. Hiding beneath her bed covers out of sight Listens intent for screams demons cried Something in her room was not quite right She never dared peep and she never tried Come the dawning she awakens sleepy eyed Evidence of nightmares are but hard to find Lost within fantasy dreams then left behind. ![]() ----- Summer to Autumn Harken to the whisper of summers breeze As pretty maidens dance amidst the heath 'Neath the boughs of ripened chestnut trees Swaying to perfect rhythmic songs beneath When corns nod their heads within the sheath Haunting strings of a cello lends his voice Singing mellow refrains of autumns choice. Harken to the birdsong upon the boughs As summer ends in autumn they shall fly Echo's of the harvest thro` the plough Yielding to the ripples of waters lullaby Cries of wild hungry seagull swooping by Soaring thro` serenades of the seasons To carry forth mother nature`s reasons ![]() back to list |
Jez FarmerHer body lies devoid of living breath, Her face bereft neath skin of shallow white, But how did a maiden fair meet with death, Did someone kill her or was it her fright While walking between tombs on All Soul's night. To young and fair was she for such an end, So vampire's heart set its magic to wend. First, a kiss upon her lips until red, And icy breath o'er her unmoving breast, Such beauty could not dwell among the dead, I held her against my unbeating chest, Until her eyes looked at me to attest That love shall last beyond the realms of time And not just in this dark vampyric rhyme! ----- A Spooky Sonnet From the dark abyss comes the girl each night, I see her move in shadows of the room, I feel her presence like a shaft of light And a chasm of despair meets with gloom, As a dreadful fear fills my heart with doom, Before I first feel her, icy fingers touch, In the misty smoke of incense and smutch. She speaks of all her unfilled hopes and dreams, This nocturnal girl, deprived of her life, Now exists only in the midnight streams, As her whispered sadness cuts air as a knife, So young she was yet knew the worst of strife, And I do not scream but hold her cold hand Until she returns to the spirit land ![]() ----- Viscous India A simple pen I have to write my soul, In ink upon an empty vellum page, Viscous India spiralled thoughts extol, And words become the voice of love and rage Also gentle wisdoms as words come of age, As thoughts and ink combine in poet's verse, A sonnet where love's dreams so oft rehearse. For love alone makes a heart find its beat, A flowing rhythm spirals within ink, As nib pirouettes o'er another sheet, The heart and mind unite the soul in sync An old-style sonnet becomes a poet's wink, A lover's letter only for her eyes, A heart's impassioned plea with no disguise. back to list |
