Form Challenges #26
DECASTICH or SONNETINA

In my opinion, this form is a delight and I'm amazed poets haven't done justice to it, until now (hopefully). According to Turco's "Book of Forms", the Decastich is any whole poem of 10 lines. There is no reference to meter or rhyme pattern and so because of its flexibility it allows for experimentation of ideas.
Aside from couplets several other ideas come to mind to make mini Sonnets eg
Sestet with a Quatrain, (6 x 4)
Two Quatrains and a couplet, (4 x 4 x2. or 4 x 2 x4)
Two Quintains, (5 x 5)
Octave with a tail, (8 x 2)

There is also the possibility of playing with the Repeating Forms and producing a variation of one of them.
Whilst researching this form it was found that Australian Alex Skovron had published a book of 100, 10 line poems, of which he called the form Sonnetina. Several other poets had used the idea of a mini-Sonnet and used the title of Sonnetina, and quite logically if forms are used similar to those of Sonnet forms, then why should they not also be labled as mini Sonnets or Sonnetina.
This is truly a great opportunity, and I imagine it will inspire a whole series of poems written under this heading.< Further web searches brought me to that most prolific and versatile of all poets Jan Haag, and this is what she wrote,
#79 DECASTICH

Sic transit gloria mundi -- so passes
the glory of the world -- one says to the pope
and others, whether the tow is burnt or no.
Woven of hemp or woven of jute from scutched
and hackled fiber -- consider the sutra's
warning, consider the Vedic creed. Burn with
fire, worship the wind, and ponder Indra's pearl.
Fly to the moon with laughter, slide down the sun's
beam. Capture the gold, silver, majestic world
prior to sic transit gloria mundi.

Sonnetina

Because of love I threw away the sense
that guided me throughout the modest years.
The earth grew small, and all my self defence
withered before a ghost of maudlin fears.
Snake eyes can't see the stars, nor can they know
the nightmare depths a wasted soul will sow.

Yet pale is not the kingdom that awaits
my journeyed heart. I planted faith before
I left, and nailed my theses on death's door.
For, only shadows long for feigned soulmates.

The Latest in Ooh La La

Oh, golden lady you sit so lovely
draped in a loose robe, swathed in the copper
like light of the western sun, and I can
almost smell the fragrance of the perfume
this glossy magazine is purporting
as being a sure fire way to attract
the handsome fellow on the opposite
page as he is drinking his ever so
smooth brandy, looking into the distance
as if it holds an image of angels.

Blind Panic

The moment gives a pretension
Mind starts toward apprehension
Things go bump at night
Dark, distorting sight
Come undone; as it might

~ The unknown is startlingly near
Tension can be cut with a shear
Adrenaline high
Spectres whizzing by
mouth goes dry: taste is fear!

Let it Fall
based on a rhupunt

So, let it fall: and best off all, heed every call, be in the thrall of laws of fate
Essence of time, force you to climb, turn on a dime and compensate
Live by the truth, don't lose your youth, don't be uncouth, grow as you must
Bearings need oil, lifestyle needs toil, don't act the foil, move on like dust
Get what you need, put down your seed, succumb to greed, gather in worth
Don't use a crutch, keep out of Dutch, don't eat to much, or swell your girth
Watch things you say, sanity each day, kneel down to pray, live the moment
Keep on the hop, need never stops, blood pressure drops, stay on one bent
Give kids candy, be a bit randy, also handy, yield to the call
Live your whole life, and avoid stife, cautions are rife, so let it fall!.

Higher Dimension

Of the eros that we feel
Of the love found at the falls
Feel released into an inner dimension
Fallen from the clouds rains of despair
For want of higher being
For need of soft satin on skin
Of just another long moment of touch
Feelings to add to those already had
For the sake of beauty in higher regard
A higher dimension to the stolen silk of passions.

Adrift

opposing shores promise
cornucopian futures
adrift with half an oar to steer
cast between two choices
still waters, vacant skies
offer no navigational hints
parched dreams thirst
for resolution, a beginning
blinded by possibility’s vastness
star guide closes her eyes.

-----

Broken

Thread-bare and weary, patience frays
into lint found in pockets and bellybuttons.

Time taunts, teases and skips away,
with hope, bundled in rope, jerked behind.

Contentment and peace cohabit in a cabin
on a mountain no seeker shall find.

Childless women make noises about choice
while empty wombs weep bloody tears.

Suicidal humanity clear-cuts ecological lungs;
Gaia, betrayed, plots revenge.

-----

Gaia's Fury

Forests felled for progress
Oceans and skies choked with its effluence

Can no one hear Gaia’s enraged screams
in the winds of the Cat 4 hurricane?
Or see her anger scratched into drought-cracked soil?
We sleep while her tears flood the valleys,
her oceans heave, the earth quakes
and her fury erupts in blistering flames.

Ecologically illiterate, we ignore her signs
as we serenely stroll towards our reckoning.

-----

Six AM

Burrowed beneath rumpled bedclothes,
alarm chirps merry six;

Eyes squeezed shut against daily tears of dread,
hand reaches out and thumps intruder of dreams:
fresh snow sparkles blue
Technicolor sun pulses joy
lovers frolic - alive happy free.
Silently begging for ten minutes more (PLEASE);
Failure to recapture springs tears free.
As I stumble to the toilet, I wonder why I am.

Beauty in Silence

If I were stranded on an island’s shore
Without one sign of civilization
I wouldn’t be happy but I’d survive
Intact like me paper, pens strewned in sand

Must be a reason they and I made it
I’m surrounded by beauty and silence

Obviously no one’s here to listen
I purge what’s within and let it escape
Write everything I’ve kept filed in my heart
Wrap it in palm leaves to you with the tide

-----

Desire

The table was full of dirty dishes
Suddenly this irresistible urge
To make love right now this very minute
Took over all my senses my being
Aggressively I undressed this stranger
Our bodies filled with incredible lust
After wards I felt very satisfied
Until I noticed the spaghetti pot
Reality like a permanent stain
For a moment I'd escaped in pleasure.

-----

Luminaries

Last night they arrived right on time
Without publicity without one cue
Tiny lights seemed to dance between trees
It made me smile, it made me remember
When I was young and filled mason jars full
Trying to run faster than ever
To be the first to capture summer's gift
No choreography set to music
Could equal this unwritten script
Free to those who care to watch fireflies.

-----

Need

If I ever wandered away
Would you count the minutes, hours
Pray for my return with each tear
Promise me everything will change
No more secrets,no more riddles
Pure love is all that I request
I need to know this before I return
For I did not know how to come home
Till the hurt was buried in the past
Then I listened to my heart lead the way.

Patchwork

Look at her hands, at the needle and thread,
And the fabrics of folk in her heart.
Look at the lines and the needle-pricked thumbs
and the patches fraying apart.

"This cloth," she says, "was a bridesmaid’s dress
And this was a summer skirt.
This was your Dad’s and this was my Mam’s
And this from your uncle’s shirt".

The colours have dimmed in this family quilt
but her love holds the threads together.

Pieces

If the pieces stopped fitting into place,
I would have never come home to find you.
But, without rust or even a slight sound,
Again moving as one against what proved
To be a sidestep in the darkened streets
That we had once run through on floating feet.

We have come to owe each other nothing,
Even though we're as useful separate
As we are powerless to stop what brings
This: our painful, beautiful, perfect fit.

Assumptions

I never meant to push you away,
I never meant to ignore you
I just couldn't be here every day
I assumed you had a different view
I assumed you didn't want me to stay.

You didn't call me and say g'day
So I assumed that we were through
But you know what wise men say
It makes asses out of me and you
I'm so glad you want me to stay.

An idea for a Sonnetina using 5 X 5 and a simple rhyme form.

Castles in my mind

Last night I heard the Pipes again.
The wind whipped up my eager senses
Turning my vision to the waters
Even though the sound was of air.
As I stood below the ruins,
Humbled by the years of those before me
I heard their voices assault me
Those who had died those years before.
I would offer them my hand that they would rise
Above this fertile earth of ashen bone.

How do I know?
(Modelled after the Sestina)

How do I know she is my love?
So many ways show she is mine
See her eyes and see them glow.
Her look is headier than any wine
See her smile, look at her serenity
Her touch tells me she is content

My knowing she is content
Only makes for a stronger love
Keeping her serenity making her mine
After wine, I bathe in her afterglow.

-----

Midwinter

There's a change in the weather
That’s not even gradual any longer,
Instead the finality of an arrival
Like the stone dry of winter grass
Thick stalks and leathery husks
Flying like an old woman's hair

The South-East Antarctic wind
Gusting white Cirrus clouds
Instead of rain laden Cumulus
Clacking a sombre greeting song

-----

She comes deliciously
(Modelled after the Sestina)

She comes deliciously after wine
See her in peace, see her serenity
As she lays there smiling in her love
And all the beauty of that afterglow
I watch her sleep, see her content
Knowing that evermore she's mine.

How brave to say that she is mine
I know she is tastier than any wine
I am content to be part of her serenity
And of the afterglow created by love.

-----

Shivers

In the blackest night of twisted dreams
On a wrought iron holder black and bent.
There is the melted wax of candles spent
Now feel the paralysis of silent screams.

There….Shadows where no light shone
Isolated and all alone!

Shiver now this hot summer eve
For there are certain dreams we weave
That makes webs of midnight lace
Reflecting upon a sleeping face.

-----

Shoe is on the other foot

The house is empty, save for lost shadows
And I am at a loss for once
The phone will not be picked up
Nor may I expect any e mails
Which only expands my feelings
Matched by the dour day outside
Leaving me here alone to ponder
Now I am the one that will stay put
Whilst you are the one to wander
For once the shoe is on the other foot.

-----

Vampire Moon

Mine is not to pursue, nor is it to entice,
But realise a realm exists not of man
Where life is not measured in your span
And drinking human blood will suffice.

Hear the subtle beat of leathered wings
And see the silhouette against my light.
Too late, you have ventured in the night
For up here I can see what misery it brings.

Looking down after I see an empty shell
One more soul is added to the ranks of Hell.

A variation of Shakespearian Sonnet using two quatrains and a couplet.

Sonnetina Sequence

In the Sonnet Part 1 of the The Poets Garret, it states that Sonnets can be linked by a theme and a form, and so logically it should be asked why can't a sonnetina. The example of a Sonnetina Sequence shown below whilst being free verse is an exercise in alliteration.
Sombre Lady

1

Silent now.
Staring at the drizzling rain
In a semi-conscious stupor
Her misty blue eyes, dry
Once filled with teardrops

She watched teardrops
Fall to the floor
Like the raindrops dripping
Gravely from gutters
In a pitter-patter of bitter memories

-----

2

Sitting almost naked
On the cold cordwood floor
Futility of hope long abandoned
Dry silent sobbing
Betraying red eyed torment.

The tumultuous circle
Several shivering shrinking
Shrieking sobbing serenades
Angst amidst anguish
Of this severe affliction.

-----

3

When attempting to forget,
Nothing soothes pain
And it's persistent personality
The only implication
Being patience

Incapable of moving on
Unwilling makes unable
To simply find another.
Other fish in other pools
Are not wanted........Yet!

-----

4

The process of healing
Positively impossible,
Stuck in this wet, muddy rut
Wanting to move in time
Perhaps possibly possible

Winding roads of life
Once seeming impassable
Diverged from misty woods
Strange signposts
Leading...........Where?

-----

5

Now wanting to move
Recognising desire
Still capable of careful reference
Needing emotion, love?
Is that so strange?

Now, reminiscent of sadness
Watching the rain fall again,
With misted eyes
And whispered breath
She simply sighs.
