KYRIELLE

This was once a very popular French form dating from the Middle Ages. It is written in quatrains (four lines of poetry) which includes a Refrain (A repeat line, phrase, or word) and as is normal with French poetry it is syllabic (in this case eight syllables) (English - "Tetrameter") to make up a quatrain rhyming, in this case a. a. b. B.... c. c. b. B... etc
each quatrain finishing with the same line, phrase or word Refrain. Here is a very enjoyable example by John Payne:

A Little Pain

A little pain, a little pleasure.
A little heaping up of treasure,
Then no more gazing upon the sun.
All things must end that have begun.

Where is the time for hope or doubt?
A puff of the wind and life is out:
A turn of the wheel and the rest is won.
All things must end that have begun.

Golden mornings and purple night,
Life that fails with the failing light:
Death is the only deathless one.
All things must end that have begun.

John Payne

In this example, you will notice that a rhyme pattern was established where couplets were used. As an alternative however, a rhyme may be used using alternate line rhyme and so we would end up with a pattern of a. b. a. B....c. b. c. B. etc
Constructing this poem the poet has quite a choice: Another alternative is for the second OR third line not rhyme at all, then it ends up with. a. X. a. B....c. X. c. B. etc

A far different variation is the:

Kyrielle Sonnet
As you know the Sonnet is a 14 line poem, and the natural tendency for french forms to link in some way. It also means that if we take a three stanza Kyrielle and add the first line (The link) A. to the refrain we have another French Sonnet using whatever rhyme pattern you chose the final stanza is the link and the refrain A. B.. Here is an example of that form:

Love Was The Key

Long ago, a little girl dreamed
The need was already there, it seemed
She knew deep in her own essence
Love was the key to her existence

Poems she wrote of, as a lost teen
Spoke of the love she oft would dream
Never did she put up resistance
Love was the key to her existence

Mistakes were made along the way
But, she never did give up or stray
Her heart was filled with persistence
Love was the key to her existence

Long ago, a little girl dreamed
Love was the key to her existence

Beautiful Woman

When I walk my fat thighs jiggle
and my bum, oh my!, does wiggle;
it does not matter Iím not slim,
I am a beautiful woman.

Sometimes a lady, circumspect,
insist on treatment with respect;
for even when my hairís undone,
I am a beautiful woman.

A load of smarts, Iím funny too;
I can hammer though prefer to screw;
can hold my own against any man,
I am a beautiful woman.

My eyes, theyíll glow with raw desire,
my body burn with passionís fire,
hot and sexy when Iíve a whim,
I am a beautiful woman.

Thankful for these gifts received,
care about those with less than me,
generous, loving, do what I can,
I am a beautiful woman.

My soul has been described as old,
within my breast beats heart of gold,
I am secure with who I am,
I am a beautiful woman.

-----

Days Pass By

I fear to laugh and so to weep
The scars I wear are old and deep
Live on I must, at least to try
I do my best as days pass by.

Fate treats me ill, she is not kind
Promised me once then changed her mind
Warm heart turns cold as questions why
I do my best as days pass by.

We loved, he left then came once more
Impatient, wait for rap on door
That will not come for all I cry
I do my best as days pass by.

News here at last I hoped might come
But words aren't right, seems Fate has won
Her victor's spoils I can't deny
I did my best as days passed by.

Too weary for another test
I swallow sleep's eternal rest
My love my love my love I sigh
Into death's mist and days pass by.

-----

Know Not What To Do

Into dreams, unbidden, you come;
Stars shine bright; a sliver, the moon.
Across the miles two become one-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Alone was my way, all my life;
Never knew love 'til I found you.
Now I see me as loving Wife-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Am I reading between the lines?
Oh God I'd feel like such a Fool.
Yet we're so much alike, one mind-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Had nothing to give, nor knew how;
Lived my life with nary a clue.
I see the truth, obvious now-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Icy shroud has begun to melt;
Cupid's arrow has pierced me through.
The pain orgasmically heartfelt-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Never felt such wonder before;
My fragile heart is pure and true.
Insatiable now, I want more-
Oh, God, I know not what to do.

-----

My love, My Destiny

Searching for years yet finding naught
Net sadly empty, nothing caught
Around the world, across vast sea
Where is my love, my destiny?

Lonely spirit tries, tries again
Impatient heart asks how and when
Will I know him? Will he know me?
Where is my love, my destiny?

Silken words sent through Ďnet wires
Wake-up calls that light lust fires
A soul once sad now full of glee
Are you my love, my destiny?

Our hearts connect through time and space
Time marches on yet we donít race
We laugh and share, establish "we"
Are you my love, my destiny?

I long to see me in your eyes,
To surround us with breathless sighs
Soon enough in Real-time weíll meet
You are my love, my destiny.

-----

The Wait

I lie alone in bed each night,
stare at the dark, picture his face,
feel his strong arms hold me tight,
I miss my love but I must wait.

Our love, we know, is real and true,
embedded deep, a plan of Fate.
I want him now, "someday" must do,
I miss my love but I must wait.

Memories made once weíll make again...
again, again..ítil reach that state,
barely manage satisfied grins;
I miss my love but I must wait.

Same path Iíd choose even if I knew;
he is my life, my love, my mate.
What we have is shared by few;
I miss my love but I must wait.

I mark each day towards our someday
though we donít have definite date,
Iíll bide my time until he stays--
I miss my love but I must wait.

Soulsease

At Peace

Another day is done at last,
each day now seems to go so fast...
For now, my dues have all been paid,
at peace, I watch the sunset fade.

Contented with my earthly lot,
I settle in my favoured spot
and watch the light play in the glade,
at peace, I. Watch the sunset fade.

in hues of red and gold, it flows
across the shrubs, the tall dog-rose,
illuminates each leaf and blade;
at peace, I watch. The sunset fade.

deprives the world of warmth and light,
and yet the scene is etched so bright
within my mind, it is displayed...
At peace, I watch the sunset fade.

-----

Moonlight Seranade

I gaze across the silent Earth,
watching the moment of rebirth.
A woman walks into the glade,
I hear the moonlight serenade.

Her skin is silvered by the light;
beneath, her passions will ignite.
Upon the ground sheís now arrayed;
I hear the moonlight serenade.

She gives herself up readily
to Luna, shining steadily,
and as her form begins to fade
I hear the moonlight serenade.

-----

Spring Enduring

So slow and subtle, yet never still,
almost as cold as the death it cheats,
bound to a purpose, an iron will,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Hidden so deep from the winter cold,
waiting with patience Ďtil chill retreats.
Sentience born when the world was old,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Strength found in beauty, and all thatís good,
never dismayed by its dark defeats,
vigour that lives on in stone and wood,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Earth holdís its breath as the sleeper wakes,
heralds of green so restrained, discreet,
marking the birth of the Spring, that waits
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

-----

The Storyteller

You touch me with the tales you tell
of love and lovers matched so well.
I feel their strength; they keep me warm,
with silken words you clothe my form.

On journeys to the farthest stars
my mind explores, there are no bars
to hold me back, I'll ride the storm,
with silken words. You clothe my form

so delicate, the ones you use
the perfect one you always choose,
unlike my mind, in helpless swarm
with silken words, you clothe my form.

And so my mind will feed on yours,
I'll follow you where eagle soars!
Adventures always are the norm,
with silken words, you clothe my form.

My eyes are heavy, time to sleep,
yet I will never cry or weep,
for even dreams you can transform!
With silken words, you clothe my form.

Such Sweet Thunder

Oh such sweet thunder as we kiss
My heart pounding, loudly thumping
Our lips meet in heavenly bliss
My heart beating, wildly beating.

So closely pressing against me
Feeling your heart madly pulsing
We are overcome with the heat
My heart beating, wildly beating.

Oh the thunder as we unite
Madly beating, bodies thrusting
Breath gasping locked in loves old rite
My heart beating, wildly beating.

Such sweet thunder, still united
Vowing love, just lightly stroking
From passion we have descended
My heart beating, wildly beating.

The Time Were In

We speak from half a world around
For a short time, we are so close again
United by just voice and sound
How strange it is the time we're in

Yet is our love so very strange
We are together are we not?
Our lives and times we rearrange
How strange it is the time we're in

We know, we share, we love, each night
Or is it day? I do not know.
I only know that it feels so right
How strange it is the time we're in

In days long gone to loves we wrote
And time went so slow until the day
The postman's whistle heralded a note
It's better now the time we're in.

We read and treasured every word
Wrote a response and held our breath
Time would drag till again we heard
Its faster now the time we're in.

Temptation ever would be loves bane
For whist they wait 'twas easy to sin
But what's so different is the same
It's easier now the time we're in.

These Hands

These hands have not had a manicure
Your safety my love I will ensure.
They were they never soft like yours
With these hands you can feel secure.

How much do I love to touch you
A simple touch, is this the key?
And please you so love will mature
With these hands you can feel secure.

How much with you do I love to play
Love will light up the dullest day
And pleasure you, my life's amour
With these hands you can feel secure.

Your hands are so soft and tender
A simple touch and I surrender
Absence from you I can't endure
With your hands I can feel secure.

So small and pale a work of art
Willingly giving you my heart
With your love I cannot be poor
With your hands I can feel secure.

Beauty and the Beast

A candle flickers in night air
Laden with roses' fragrant flair
Held aloft by her Lady fair
While others flee she seeks the beast

Along her garden path she strolls
Small hands they tremble not at all
Away in town she hears bells toll
Knows time is dear; she seeks the beast

A pregnant moon illumes blind sky
Voices in distance, ranting cries
She quickens her pace, breathes soft sigh
Hope held firm as she seeks the beast

Then candle's snuffed, bright moon takes flight
Behind a cloud, she stops with fright
But fear trades places with delight
As eyes adjust, she seeks the beast

She knows he's there but can't quite see
A soft caress slides down her cheek
Knees tremble, she swoons, such relief
A happy end in arms of her beast

-----

The Beasts Reply

Now it is my time, it is night
The townsfolk run away in fright
Fear tells them that I might feast.
Ignorance tells them I am a beast.

Once I was human just like them
Then cursed to live in this realm
My fault, I was an arriviste,
Was cursed and became a beast.

"A beast you are, a beast you'll be
And everyone from you will flee,
One in love takes you to her breast
And thinks not of you as a beast".

So now I'm free when others sleep
My nightly vigil alone I keep
Til first glow of light in the East
I run and hide for I am "The Beast".

Whilst there is life also is hope
One maid fears not a lycanthrope
She knows her flesh is not my feast
For two nights now she's met the beast.

Why is this woman to me drawn
Has Fate sent freedom from this form?
She speaks, she smiles she is at ease
Is there a chance, she'll love a beast?

-----

Part 1 The Prequal

Looks she deep into gentle eyes
And takes no notice of his size
She sees not thick hair or great teeth
Her heart knows a prince not a beast

Upon a time a witch she found
Who told her of a prince once bound
Who roamed the nights on flesh to feast
One heart to see the prince not beast

From her window she'd watch the night
Shadows flickering by moon's light
Dreamily scheming how to meet
And win the heart of prince turned beast

Then of a sudden their time here
the town aflame with mortal fear
suddenly calm she takes her leave
to capture heart of princely beast

-----

Finale

His canine features show a smile
Though carnivore he's still docile
The maid to love he truly seeks
A manly heart beats in the beast.

But danger lurks to woo this maid
The other townsmen are all afraid
And thinking she'd become a feast
To save the maid, they'd kill the beast.

Faint heart never a fair lady won
So to woo her he has begun.
With her his manners must be meek
Finally true love tamed the beast.

The last act she must freely kiss
Even a simple peck will suffice
Freedom arrived to say the least
A loving maid freed the beast.

Papa's Cafe

Where ever you are I will be
Just look inside and you will see
Although I shall be far away
You'll sense the aroma always

Donít be afraid to be alone
Our time apart is the unknown
You know Ill miss you everyday
You'll taste the latte blend always

When you are sad or feeling blue
Recall these words I say to you
When you leave from papa's cafe
You'll sense the love inside always

Where ever you are I will be
Our time so short but true always.

Chilling Cold

Mirror must lie for I feel old
Weary legs trudge up endless stairs
Once in, must peel off many layers
I hate hate hate this chilling cold

Iím an autumn girl, truth be told
love the lingering warmth of fall
leaves gaily dance 'til final call
I hate hate hate this chilling cold

I yearn to be free of winterís hold
Iíd like to hibernate until spring
awaken to blooms as birds sing
I hate hate hate this chilling cold

Mirror must lie, I feel so old

I hate hate hate this chilling cold.

Nothing New

Searching for answers to it all,
how far it is that we must fall
it seemed that life had just begun
nothing is new under the sun.

The winds of change blow cold and strong,
it seems theyíve blown my whole life long.
They chase me down, where Ďere I run,
nothing is new under the sun.

And yet, my life has far to go
Iíll not submit to fall, or blow.
I know Iíll find what must be done
nothing is new under the sun.

Searching for answers to it all,
nothing is new under the sun.

I do not laugh

I do not laugh nor do I weep
The wounds I have go far to deep
But I live on still, or I just try
And do the best as days go by.

The words we spoke the songs we sang
The old bell a time or to we rang
The place echoes with our reverie
I remember as days go by.

And now I see another's face
Its another love, not replace
For I love her I need not try
Memories make as days go by

I do not laugh nor do I weep
I do my best as days go by.

I Taste Your Essence

I taste your essence on my lips
I sense you blowing on the wind
Still feel you at my fingertips
And see you smiling in my mind.

At heavenly dust a passion grips
Each night with dusk I feel a kind
Of bond with you of honeyed sips
And see you smiling in my mind.

Soul and body freely flies anew
My will unlocks and love unbinds
A freer feeling of loving with you
And see you smiling in my mind.

I taste your essence on my lips
And see you smiling in my mind.

My Wings

My wings cover the tapestried earth
And the shot blue silk of the sea
Flying high see the sun give birth
The world below in my apogee

My wings will ride the silken morn
Flying where birds can never be
Under Cancer and Capricorn
The world below in my apogee

Patterning the silent and sunlit sky
Over which I rule all that I see
Cloud pennants unfurl as I fly
The world below in my apogee

My wings cover the tapestried earth
The world below in my apogee

To Learn To Love

I

Body and mind conditioned by life
Shows no emotion, is stoic in strife.
Open my heart before love says goodbye
To learn to love, I must learn to cry

Too long my heart has been asleep
Now through you, I learn to weep
Because of you my spirit is high
To learn to love, I must learn to cry

No longer holding feelings inside
Choose instead this uncertain ride
Which only you can dulcify
To learn to love, I must learn to cry

Now it is time for me to weep
To learn to love, I must learn to cry

II

Now it is time for you to weep
Release all you have tried to keep
Trust in me love, I will not lie
To learn to love, you must learn to cry

I'm here besides you as you sob
Angry and frustrated, inside you rob
With trust our love cannot die
To learn to love, you must learn to cry

I look in your eyes seeing tears
Holding and kissing away your fears
Trust and love me for eternity
To learn to love, you must learn to cry

Bodies and minds conditioned by life
To learn to love, you must learn to cry

Time

When is it time to speak of love
Too soon and flies away the dove
And holding back too long we wait
We lose the chance and lose a mate

So begins the circle of romance
Once again we must learn to dance
Or stand at the bar and mutely wait
We lose the chance and lose a mate

The fear that sometimes sews lips tight
Hoping greys split to black and white
Will dwell on pain of past heartache
We lose the chance and lose a mate

When it is time to speak of love
We lose the chance and lose a mate

Kyrielle Sonnet Sequence

Ryter Roethicle

Mirror of senses:

-----

Sight: the first sense:

Your reflection in the window
I wonder is it you that I see?
Each time we pass I look at it
I only see what you permit.

What lurks behind the smile
I see and me you so beguile?
Each time we meet do you commit
I only see what you permit?

You turn to me, two more mirrors
Do your eyes hide your sorrows?
My inquisition they do not admit
I only see what you permit.

Your reflection in the window
I only see what you permit?

-----

Sound: the second sense:

Your reflection in the window
The depth of your love I wonder
It does not speak will not admit
It only says what you permit?

It turns to me, still with a smile
No sound from your image to beguile
No vows of love will it commit
It only says what you permit?

If only that image could be heard
If only three exquisite words
Could be heard to come from it
I only hear what you permit?

Your reflection in the window
I only hear what you permit?

-----

Smell: the third sense:

Your reflection in the window
Has no scent, where is the odour?
Sweet, more fragrant than any bluet
What is the fragrance you permit?

Clean, showered and freshly soaped
This reflection doesn't bring me hope
The tangy bouquet where is it?
What is the fragrance you permit?

This glass image has no essence
Which can compare to your presence
There is no loves pungency in it
What is the fragrance you permit?

Your reflection in the window
What is the fragrance you permit?

-----

Taste: the fourth sense:

Your reflection in the window
What flavour does it endow
Will my tongue savour every bit
What is the taste, that you permit?

There is not the mouth watering
Lip smacking tangy appetiser.
I can't explore the tasty split
What is the taste, that you permit?

The saltiness there is none
Flavoured loves juices are gone
There's no finer meal I must admit
What is the taste, that you permit?

Your reflection in the window
What is the taste, that you permit?

-----

Touch: the fifth sense:

Your reflection in the window
How can I make its heart grow?
Why is it not possible to touch it?
What may I touch, that you permit?

This impostor's image in the mirror
Holds your shape and your form
But not your love that special vite
What may I touch, that you permit?

How well I know your softness
your warm wet lips so soft to kiss
trembling flesh willing to submit
What may I touch, that you permit?

Your reflection in the window
What may I touch, that you permit?

-----

Soul: the sixth sense:

Your reflection in the window
Are you Juliet and I your Romeo
The love light that your soul emits?
How may I know what you permit?

What lurks behind your smile
Is it me you wish to beguile?
Mona Lisa looking so enigmatic
How may I know what you permit?

You turn to me, two more mirrors
must you forever hide your sorrows
Is it love for me you must admit
How may I know what you permit?

Your reflection in the window
How may I know what you permit?
