Youths Dreams....Burns Sonnet How long did youths' dreams delude us Not long, the greed of adults, denied the truth And brought us into their world of excess Robbing us by stealing what was left of youth. And much more often what was teenage life. Telegrams wishing the victim "Happy Birthday", Then taking the rest of any childhood away Made him face a life of danger, bullets and strife. No more a life of dreams and rock and roll Too often now walking in jungles looking out Waiting for scouting signals or others call Who knows, it could be your turn to see and shout. So many young men have answered the call With what justification? I answer, "Bugger all". |
