The Elm Tree....Dutch Sonnet

Tonight I watched how sunbeams played around.
Dull bark, enfolded by long leafy arms,
was changed into a jewel set, light crowned.
Bewitchingly, my elm-tree showed her charms.
Attracted, I went out and saw her gowned
in bright green satin, trailing on the ground;
it whispered softly on the evening breeze,
clung to my elm’s tall trunk, swaying in tease.
Around my garden trees stand guard, give shade
when sunlight shines too bright to be outdoors;
protect me from my neighbours’ eyes, evade.
Each year I greet new seedlings left to grow;
birds’ presents, in reward of countless seeds
I feed them with, through winter’s cold and snow.
