Closing the rift?....John Tee Sonnet

Why can't we close that rift between us now?
Each day new arguments keep us apart.
you treat me like a pupil, not your wife,
with you the teacher, always knowing best.
It hurts me when you say I mope and sulk,
toddlers do it when they don't get their way.
Why can't we close that rift between us now,
each day new arguments drive us apart.
I cannot start each morn as if brand-new,
as I am still digesting words you said;
my memory works differently from yours,
you easily forget unpleasantness.
Why can't we close that rift between us now?
Each day new arguments keep us apart.
